Needing Tips from Moms Who Walk Their Dog

We just moved and now don't have a fenced yard. I have to walk our dog. I would like to know what others do to make it easier. What do you do/use to pick up the waste? Do you just throw it in the trash or have a special disposal plan? I have been using walmart plastic bags, but we are running out. This is a townhouse neighborhood with shared yards and walkways. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I use the bags from the grocery that you put fruit and vegetables in, and any other bag I can find. When desperate I buy doggy bags at a pet shop. We keep a step open garbage can in the garage so that the lid closes with a decent seal until garbage day.

I too take along the plastic grocery bags...but I have a strange dog that doesn't poop on his walks...pees EVERYWHERE but has yet to poop 1 time on all his 4 years of life thus far, weird-o!

I always take 2 bags with, 1 for scooping then 1 for extra bagging.
I would just throw it in the first available garbage can, as long as it is bagged and tied I don't see the problem in throwing it is someones can that is already out on the curb or the garbage can at the park...if not just carry it home...as long as it is double bagged it shouldn't be a problem?!

They have little roles of poop bags you can buy anyplace (like walmart ect) and they even have a little dispenser/'holder that clips right on to your leash.

Hi there!

I have a little dog bone shaped key chain that i attached to the dog's leash. You can buy the refill bags at the dollar store (60 are in a pack I think). Its easy but the bags do go quickly if your dog likes to go a lot (my dog goes 2-3 per a walk some times). I always thought another good idea would be those bags from the store that you put your veggies and meats in....too bad they don't sell those! I know it can be hard to walk your dog and pick up the waste too.

Good luck!

PS I think any bag would do!

I love the little attachments for the leash that hold the little waste pick up bags. They have them at all the pet stores as well as Walmart and Target and some grocery stores. Very convenient but can get pricey. If I have extra plastic grocery bags I stuff those into the little attachment. Wrap and double wrap so it can be tossed into the trash bin without being too stinky. I think the worst thing is when you see someone watch their dog go potty and then not pick up after them. Grrrr.

I'd set up a garbage can outside the home that stays there specifically for the poop. That way you never have to bring it inside and your house won't stink. I'd also look into the bags they sell in the baby section for tying up diapers. The dollar store has them for a buck, 100 count. They hold about 4 wet diapers if that helps with the size.

I pick up my dog's poop w/grocery bags then walk back with it to dispose
of it in my own trash can.
I am looking for biodegradeable (sp?) bags.
If I pass a park, I dump the bag in their cans.
If you are out of bags, you can use paper lunch bags (not as easy to use to pick up).
Since you don't have a fenced yard, you can always put up a temporary fencing unit against a side of your house. Just make it large so he doesn't get bored. Hope that helps.

We have a plastic container that looks like a dog bone and it has scented bags to pick up the waste. We have trash cans on one of the streets we walk on and put it in there or in our garage trash can when we get home.

Even if I did have a fenced in back yard - I would walk my dog every day.

You can purchase the bags at PetSmart.

I keep a small can outside, drilled holes in the bottom for drainage. I got official dog poop bags, ones with handles are best! Use those and put in outside can till garbage day. Also..not sure if you have one but I put my dog on the treadmill to for exercise when we cannot get outdoors. You can get one of those tie down ropes out back door maybe. Glad to see you are picking up, cannot stand when people don't then my kid steps in it! gross!!

We lost our dog in August. He was 11. The dog before him was 16 when she passed away so that's a lot of dog walking days! LOL
We usually took a plastic bag -- they do sell leashes that hold a small roll of bags that can be re-filled, but because I'm not completely on board with all reusable bags, I usually had plenty of grocery, Target, etc. plastic bags available.
But truthfully, our dog usually wouldn't poop on his walk--the O. before him either....so we mostly scooped our yard, put it in plastic bags & put it out for the trash....the nightly walks were more for exercise and the VERY occasional poopie!
If you can get your dog into a routine of going in your yard everyday, that will eliminate the need for picking it up on walks!

I walk our dog every day. During the week the walk starts after my kids get on the bus. On the weekend the walk is a family walk after breakfast.

We use the black tie handle bags from Target. Tie handles work well for smaller hands....since my kids can't tie knots yet.

If I pass a park I'll toss the bag in the trash there if she does another poop....or carry it back home.

Usually our dog goes out at 6:30am with me and poops right away. I pick it up and leave it by our side garage door. It doesn't really smell in those bags. Whenever I bring out a bag of trash from the kitchen I pick up any doggie poo bags and toss them in before I put the trash in the outdoor trash can.

Our daily newspaper usually comes folded in a bag, and the long, thin shape is perfect for sliding my hand to the bottom, picking up the poop, then turning it inside out and tying a knot over the poop. I can even fit another poop in (for the other dog) if I only have one bag in my pocket!

If you go to the dollar stores they usually have the doggy bags that you can use and I just dispose of them in our regular garbage.

Use your Jewel/Dominicks bags or any other plastic bags to pick up...then just tie it up good and should be fine in the trash. Next time you go to the store, just grab a few extra...you can also use the plastic thing the newspaper comes in, or even the plastic bags that you put your produce in. Thank you for giving your dog the walks they love and deserve, AND for picking up after him/her.
