My family is moving to College Station in the summer. We're trying to find out what areas and schools in College Station that we really want to AVOID. We'll be looking with a realtor this coming Sunday, and we would love some good advice. Any day-cares we should avoid would be great information too.

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone who answered me. We we're in College Station this past weekend, and you we're all right! It was great. We're really looking forward to raising our children there. (Ages 11, 8 and 2) You we're right about the homes and schools too. We looked at several homes, and we really like on in Edelweiss, but we're competingwith another buyer for it, so wish me luck. I looked at 4 daycares while I was there, and I'm trying to narrow it down between First Baptist and St.Thomas Aquinis. I looked at the Longmire Learning center and wasn't impressed at all, even though that came highly recommened. (My husband, who never notices anything, noticed that they we're serving green "juice" for snack, and that the place looked like it needed a good scrubbing.) They also would only let your child sleep with a towel at nap time. We also saw the A&M faculty day care, but the waiting list was really long. I learned that it's almost impossible to get lost, and everyone is really friendly. I'm looking forward to moving back to Texas.

Hi D.,

I have lived in College Station for 9 years and LOVE, love, love it here! I think you're in for a treat! Honestly there are lots of great neighborhoods and schools here. I don't actually can't think of any that are bad. We live in the Edelweiss subdivision. Another pretty nice one to look at is Copperfield and Castlegate, and Shannendoah. Ask your realtor about these!! Who is your realtor? I know of a few good ones. My daughter goes to St. Thomas Aquinas daycare. It's WONDERFUL. I looked at many, many daycares in this town. A few that I can tell you I recommend you AVOID are the Aggieland Learning Center and the Kindercare daycares. Also not to impressed with the Stepping Stone school here. If you need more info on anything here please do not hesitate to contact me! You can email me at ____@____.com.

Hi D.,

I have lived here for over 10 years and have a 17 month old son and another baby on the way. The College Station school district is very good as a whole. The Bryan school district has some good schools and some pretty bad schools. You have to be more selective on where you live if you are in Bryan. Since I do not have a school-age child, nor any friends who do, I don't know much about which College Station schools are the best. We live in Castlegate and are zoned to Forest Ridge, which is a recently built elementary. I have heard good things about it. I also hear wonderful things about College Hills Elementary.

As far as daycares, I am really surprised about the comment on Stepping Stone School below. I visited practically every daycare in this town and SS was by far the best I saw. Stepping Stone prides itself on following NAEYC guidelines which are more strenuous then the state guidelines. They do not have any TVs in the facility and do arts and crafts every day. Check out their website at http://www.steppingstoneschool.com and make sure you at least visit. My son was at A Special Place for a very short while whil we waited to get in to Stepping Stone (their waitlist is VERY long) and I absolutely HATED it. They have extremely high turnover in their staff (at least in the infant room, were very lax about keeping track of when children came and left, put babies to bed with bottles, and had a child with horrible ezcema but none of the teachers knew what the oozing rash on her face was when I asked. I would avoid that place. I also was not impressed with Aggieland Learning Center. They have a drop-in daycare and often combine the drop-in infants with the regular infants, which seems wrong to me. I have a friend who uses Kinder Care off of Anderson and loves it. I know there is a lot of variation among the different Kinder Cares in town.

I hope this helps. College Station is a wonderful place to live with a lot to offer at a low cost of living. i was born and raised in Houston and i will never go back to a city that size. If we want to visit the zoo or museums, we can just drive to Houston or Waco and back in a day with no problem. Let us know how the house hunt goes!

I used to leave in college station and the only school that i had trouble with was college hill. Southwood valley is a good school. I use to work at aggieland day care center and that is not a good day care. You can go online and see what day care the state has been called on and what people tthink about the day care centers. If you like i will be happy to give you the website.

Erin is right. If you look for places in Bryan make sure you do your research. I believe Johnson elementary is the best. As for College Station, I haven't heard anything bad about them. But I have a 6 month old so I don't know much about the schools.

Please join our website. You can connect with Mom's in the area and get LOTS of advice. www.bcsmoms.com It's a great way to learn about the area before you get here. LOTS of moms have done this and felt so much better about their move.

Hope to see you soon!!!
