We are in the market and just wondering what people have tried and recommend. Sleep Number, Tempurpedic or just a good regular mattress?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Based on comments I think we'll stay away from sleep number. Definitely going to explore the tempurpedic option or something similar...maybe find a hotel that has them like one of the responders mentioned so we can try it out. We currently have an Original Mattress Factory bed that has been great but it's about 15 years old and my hubby has been waking with an achy back. I'll let you know what we decide!

We had a sleep number- and, for us as a couple, it was horrible. Great concept, but horrible product- for us anyway. My hubby liked firm and I liked soft, so I slept 4 inches below him- litterally, and there was a 6 inch piece of hard packing foam between us so we couldn't snuggle if we were on the same plane- lol and DH would roll over to cuddle- and fall off into my side and not be able to get out. So, needless to say-we sent it back. Now we have a high dollar regular mattress. We have had it for 2 months and it's already caving in. I mean high dollar to me for a mattress is 2,000- we thought it would be a 10 year investment and we are ready to load it up and take it back too.

I second the suggestion of an organic latex mattress. Not cheap, but they last forever, and are incredibly comfortable and free of toxins (fire retardants, particularly, are nasty stuff). We got one several years ago and have found it to be wonderful. It still looks/feels absolutely new; no sign of breaking down or sagging. We got a second one last year for a day bed, and oh, how I love the occasional naps I sneak in on that one.

By the way, my husb and I have very different firmness needs. He likes firmer for his back, and I need softer to deal with hip pain. We both love this resilient mattress.

If you look into this, you may discover you'll need a prescription from your doctor, because fire retardants are still mandated by law. That wasn't difficult for us.

Look up Savvy Rest. An alternative to chemically made foam mattresses. Savvy Rest are made from organic latex. We love, love, love ours! Customize each side. A king has 6 separate layers. 3 on each side. My side is soft and cushiony. Hubby's side is more firm. They are pricey but people say they last forever. We've had ours almost a year. Looks brand new, no sinking. Bought our daughter one too. I would definitely go to a store though. I never would have spent that much if I hadn't tried out all the different configurations. PM me if you have any more questions.

i would not get a regular mattress again. I got a good one, over $1000 but the support just doesn't last. One friend has tempurpedic and loves it. 2 friends have sleep number and love it. If you like different firmness, sleep number is a good choice. If you have any aching, tempurpedic would be great. Personally, I would try temp, but after checking them all for amounts of off-gassing from their contents.

Let us know what you choose - many of us will be mattress-shopping in the next 2 years! :)

I did lay down on a sleep number bed and really didn't like it. It was like laying on a camping mattress. And since we wanted a king, there's a ridge in the middle where they join 2 twins.
We went with the Tempurpedic and love it! We've had it 2 1/2 years.
We had a top of the line Sterns & Foster before the Tempurpedic.

We have a sleep number and it's okay, but it still feels uneven as the air gets pushed around. It's 7 years old and acting moody. But worse, there is no bounce, and it sucks up the energy during sex. Sometimes you just want a good bounce!

I tried a Tempurpedic at a hotel because I was thinking of buying it. I think you either love it or hate it and I hated it. I sank into the foam and couldn't get out or roll over. It's not so great if you move in your sleep alot.

I have had several "top of the line" mattresses, worst of all was the sleep number, big waste of money. Got rid of it in less than two years. Have had Serta, Sealy, Stearns/Foster, Somma Supreme (water tubes) which was better than average. Would probably have been better off to have invested in the Tempurpedic, which is what I wanted in first place, but didn't want to spend that amount of money.......all the others put together have cost well over three times as much. Everything now seems are only to last about 8 years, are made to sleep only on one side, can't turn them over, only turn end to end.
The other mattresses used to be made to last way longer.

We never could afford an organic latex mattress but that is our dream!

Out of what you have mentioned I prefer the Tempurpedic. My husband is a big guy (6'7") and he can break down a mattress fast. Tempurpedics don't break down. We downsized to a smaller house a year ago and couldn't use our King Tempurpedic anymore so we bought a regular (high end Sternes and Foster) and it has already broken down. The new tempurpedics do not make you sweat like the older discontinued models. You won't have that problem unless you buy a used one because the stores don't sell them anymore. They are petroleum based and I HATE chemicals but we bought a floor model that had already outgassed for over a year and we had no problems. The Sleep Number is comfortable but there have been issues with mold. We didn't have our long enough to deal with that.

Whatever you buy, buy American. The memory foam from China is VERY toxic and there have been many cases of major respiratory problems. That means avoid Walmart, Sam's and Bed Bath and Beyond...and even some of the high end furniture stores. Most innerspring mattresses are made in the US.

Hope this helps!

Well, we bought a memory foam mattress (it comes rolled up in a box!) at Costco about 6 months ago on the recommendation of a friend who also has one. It is made from the same material that they use for Tempur-pedic beds, but because it does not have the brand name, it was much cheaper (I want to say it was around $900 for the Cal King size). We LOVE it. Wow. We used to have a pillow-top bed (which I hated, I swear it was making me crippled my back hurt so badly), and I will never buy a conventional mattress again. I really like the memory foam mattress.

Sleep number is a joke, my opionon. The requires you to do all the repairs, or at least try per the instruction of the person at the 800 number. Ours has never been correct on over 6 years. After many phone calls and several visits to the local store we have all but give up. Just waiting to nuy a king size frame and get a new Mattress

I have heard nothing but bad things about the sleep number mattresses. I stayed at a hotel with one, no thank you.

The tempurpedic ones are good though I don't have one. Mine is a Serta with the memory foam topper.

If anyone is in the market for an almost-new King size Tempurpedic I want to sell ours! We have the top model $4500 Tempur-cloud (feels softer than original tempurpedics) but it is still not soft enough for me. Yes it's been beneficial in many ways - less aches and pains, but bottom line, if you want a soft bed this is not it. Tempurpedics are firms, even their softest model. I guess I didn't try it at the store long enough to figure this out.

We have had very bad experiences with both Sleep Number and Sleep Experts. Sleep Experts say they have a "one year love your mattress guarantee." After about a week of sleeping on that mattress, we were lying in troughs. But since the depression would be less than one inch when we got up, they would not honor the guarantee. It was the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever had and we ended up throwing it away after a couple of months with no sleep. Then we got a Sleep Number. Apparently they have a foam topper on the demo beds or something. It is just two separate air mattresses in a frame. I have slept on cheap air mattresses from Walmart that were more comfortable. They did take it back, but it still cost us $400.
We now have a Europa from Mattress Firm. We love it.

If there is an Original Mattress Factory in your area, try them. It has been the best mattress/boxspring we've ever owned. We actually hauled it across the country. It was recommended by DH's chiropractor. Sleep Number felt like an air mattress. Tempurpedic made us sweat. Good luck. Finding a decent mattress is more time consuming than buying a new car. As always, YMMV.

I really like my Verlo. It's a mismatched set so we paid around $600 for it 4 years ago. My parents have a Sealy that was over $1K 10 years ago and it's still the most comfortable bed I've slept on. I slept on a Tempurpedic at a friend's and didn't like it - too hot.

Organic latex are such a SCAM! My husband is a firefighter and said that in order for them to comply with US safety and fire regulations ALL mattresses are doused with heavy fire retardant chemicals. So unless you're buying out of the country, you'll only be dreaming about a chemical-free existence.
