New Mom Seeking Others

I am a first time mommy to Anders, who is 6 weeks old today. Although things are getting better (most likely due to his sleeping longer at night), some days I feel so isolated. I am a 2nd grade teacher so I am used to talking a lot and being busy with kids and adults all day. Anders is learning to do more, but I still feel lonely when my husband is at work for 11 hours/day and I am alone with a baby. If there is anyone who would be willing to email me every now and then when I have first-time mom questions, I would really appreciate it. You can send me a private message and I will email you.

What can I do next?

I felt the same way when my daughter was born. I went from working in a office M-F 9-5 to being on bedrest and then home with a preemie who slept all the time. I would have to wake her up to feed her. My fiance would be at work all day and be exhausted when he got home and I was so bored, I was like take me somewhere anywhere get me out of this house. I'm also a talker and can't stand sitting at home.

Noone ever told me how boring newborns are and I didn't expect it. I know that sounds horrible but it's true they don't do anything but sleep, eat, poop.

It definately get's better and the baby get's to be so much more fun and full of personality.

My daughter is now 6 years old and is a BLAST!

I just finally started to try and get out of the house atleast once a day, that helped alot. It atleast helped me keep my sanity.

Hi Sara
I'm not sure where you live but go to MOMSCLUB.org and they can tell you where your nearest MOMs Club is. When I had my first and was new to the area it was a great way to meet new Moms with playgroups and playdates. Also check out ECFE in your area. They run parent/child classes for birth and up. It was great to be in a class with my son and Moms who all had kids the same age.

S.,
I remember that feeling and I so feel for you sweeite! We have three children and two are off to college now. (the time does go by too quickly!) I have lots of friends who are teachers as well as Mothers~! (they are great Mommys!)

If you ever want to e-mail or chat on the phone just let me know. My husband has traveled for years and he goes in spurts of being gone a lot. He's in a "traveling spurt" right now. I'm thankful that we still have one at home!
I'm so not ready to be an empty nester!! ha ha

This young age is such a busy time with a little one. Enjoy every minute but don't forget to take time for yourself. You need to take a nap when you need and/or a long shower, etc! Just taking a little time for yourself will make you feel better and you'll enjoy each moment a bit more! I know from expereince because for years I'd never do anything for myself, I'd always put everyone and everything first. (they are pretty close in age) Then one day I finally took someones advise from a friend and took a few minutes to take a nice long shower and it felt so good not to be rushed, etc. It changed the way that I felt all day! My family is my world, but I've been a happier person not losing myself in the busy life we live!

One of my dearest friends S. was our middle childs 2nd grade teacher! We've been friends for years! She teaches part time in Minnetonka and also is a realtor with her husband. They just sold a house for us a few months ago! What a blessing she is! Teachers are such wonderful people! I'm so lucky to know so many!!

It's normal to feel the way that you do and I'm so glad that you're reaching out to others! That's a great thing to do S.. You'll have many wonderful days and some not so wonderful. Make sure that you're surronding yourself with positive people though. I'm not sure how you can screen for that. Maybe you can tell by the way that people respond to you. I know that you'll find some gals from here that will be great support to you!

Enjoy being a Mommy!
S.

Wow you sound just like me!!! My son is 2.5 now and I still have those days where I think the day will never end. Maybe try MOMSclub.com I was only a member for a few months before we moved to Woodbury. But they do fun activities and help moms feel comfortable and help with all sorts of questions.
I would be more than happy to email too. Good luck

Hi S., I just had my 4th and he is 8 weeks old now. My 5 year old is in kindergarten and I have a 4 year old boy and 2 year old girl at home with me. Just know it gets better and better. I started staying home with my kids a little over 2 years ago and I didn't like it. It was lonely because of the lack of adult attention. I had to learn how to be with my kids and structure our day a little better. I do more errands than ever. I drive to the post office, go to Target for 1 or 2 things just to get out of the house too. I found a mom's group at our church 1x a week which helped. I no longer go to the group but plan days with other moms I have gotten to know. Feel free to email me. I use my computer to do a little work from home so use it when I get breaks during the day. My email is ____@____.com. I'd like to say I give good advice, but all of my kids have been so different! I am still learning too!

Have you tried finding ECFE classes in your district? They were a lifesaver for me when my children were little. Joining the YMCA is also a great benefit to the whole family. Exercising always makes me feel much better and they provide childcare for children as young as 6 weeks. When your son gets older they have great classes for preschoolers and reasonably priced swim lessons.

I felt the same way when my baby was 6 weeks old. I was a 9th grade teacher now SAHM. It gets easier. I joined an ECFE class and Mom's Club (it's an international organization - they have a web site) and so there are lots of activities and most importantly for me Mom's Nights Out. As Anders gets older he will interact with you more and that will help relieve the lonliness. Hang in there!
