New Morning Schedule & Morning Sickness

This request is probably going to sound odd... I have one son, 21 months old, and another on the way. I'm 8 weeks along. Up until now I've avoided the really awful nausea and sickness that I had last time. Recently, my son decided wake up time is 6am, and not 8 or 9 like normal. (The schedule before spoiled me I guess, he went to bed at 9pm and woke up at 8 or 9, more often than not sleeping through the night). I've noticed with the early wake up time, since I don't have time to eat a few saltines and drink a bit of water before I get all of his things ready and him up, that my morning sickness has gotten much worse. But when I get the sleep and about an hour to myself in the AM, the sickness is no where near as bad. I guess my question is, how do I get him back on the 8am wakeup schedule, or am I stuck? I tried switching his bedtime, we tried switching my hubby's morning routine, thinking he heard him... I'm not sure what else to do to get through this first trimester. I don't want to be the hot mess of last time but I feel like I'm well on my way... lol

That being said, any sure fire morning sickness remedies?? I tried just about everything last time, from saltines to suppositories, from natural/organic to prescription.... if its out there, I tried it. Nothing worked :\ Anyone else in that boat? What did you do? Especially if you have a toddler running around. I'd love some advice!

I suffer from hyperemesis....EXTREME all day all the time sickness. The only thing that worked for me was Zofran. You could also try ginger, pepermint and B vitamins. While pregnant for my youngest my oldest daughter was barely 18 months old...so I feel for you. It is not easy. But maybe you might have to set the alarm so you have time to eat. I had to do that sometimes in the middle of the night because if I woke up on an empty stomache I would be throwing up all morning. Good luck and I hope this helped.

I couldn't eat saltines in the morning .. they made the nausea worse .. I nibbled on crystallized ginger and that helped. Notice I said nibbled! I did not take a bite .. just nibbles .. and water with it. I too was sick from about the time I found out I was pregnant until the 8th month, with both kids! I had mine 27 months apart. Peppermint helped with the queasiness later in the day. good luck and remember, this too shall pass ...

toast in the morning worked for the most part for me but when that wouldn't work.... Lemon ice worked.... anything with lemon actually i preferred Rita's lemon ice cups. I would also keep part of a lemon beside my bed because smelling lemon would help me to get up without getting sick right away... Good Luck hopefully it will go away soon.....

Well, I can't respond to the morning sickness part, but my daughter from 6 months to 21 months slept from 8:30 pm till 7:30 or 8 am the next day without waking up. All of a sudden she started waking up during the night again (but going right back to sleep after I put her back in bed), and waking up by 6 to 6:30 am. I"ve never been able to get her back on track. She also naps a bit less in the afternoons now too. Only on occasion, about once every week or two, she'll sleep one morning till 7 or 7:30 at best. I'm not sure what to tell you , but I think the changing sleep schedule is normal as they get older. I've tried putting her to bed later, but that doesn't change, she still wakes up same time and then is grumpy because she's still tired. Let me know if you find a way to get him back on track to sleeping later!

I don't have a sure fire remedy. Just a coping mechanism. I have a television in my bedroom. My son was a little older than yours when I was that pregnant but not much. He turned 3 a month before his little brother was born.

In the mornings, he would wake up before I was ready. I need to lie down a little longer to keep from being really sick. I'd leave crackers on my bedside table with either a glass of iced tea (put there the night before) or a can of ginger ale. When my son would wake up, I would put on a favorite tv show of his (like Sesame Street or Blue's Clues) or a favorite video. He and I would cuddle up in bed and I would rest my eyes a bit and have my crackers (he sometimes had some too) while we watched a little kiddie tv together. It slowed things down a little and sometimes, he even went back to sleep for awhile allowing me a little extra rest.

It is definitely worth a try. Good luck

I took Vitamin B6 when I was pregnant w/#3. I don't remember how much, but I know I had to buy the 25 mgs online since no stores locally carried it. Check with your dr. Mine told me about the B6 and they also gave me a prescription for something to take when I was really bad.

I was sick from week 5 (before I even knew I was pregnant) until week 13. I also had a 3 1/2 year old at home.

As far as the sleeping goes, I don't have any advice for you. Sorry.
I hope that you get over your morning sickness soon!

Check with your obstetrician first, but when I was experiencing extreme morning sickness the doctor told me to take one vitamin b6 at bedtime. I couldn't believe how great I felt in the morning. It not only took away the morning sickness, I awoke with newfound energy.

Hi B.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'm sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well. The best thing you can do for morning sickness is to eat lots of small meals so that your belly is never empty. I would suggest putting some saltines or a breakfast bar by the side of your bed and eating it before you go in to get your son in the AM. That way you will feed the sickness before you get up to get him.

As far as sleeping - I find with my son (just turned 3) that he actually sleeps better and longer if I put him down earlier instead of later.

Good luck!

I had morning sickness from the time i found out i was pregnant until i was about almost due with my son. This may sound weird but the only thing that worked with me is mini peppermint altoids stick one under your tongue it seemed to help the nausea. I should have bought stock in the altoid company, but really it did seem to help.
GOOD LUCK i hope you find something that works for you.

Hi-
I am sorry to say I have no sleep advice! My littele one goes down at 10pm or later and wakes at 7 or so. To date, nothing has worked (ie routine, adjusting feeding times, etc.) Although our pediatrician suggested moving the time earlier by 10 minutes every couple of nights. I am trying that now:)
For morning sickness, I took gingerman cookies (Pepperidge Farm) and drank lemonade. Lemon suckers also helped as did ginger smelling body wash from bath and body works. Go figure!!!
Good luck.

Hi there,

You don't mention his nap schedule - can you adjust that to help? Also, the room darkening shades mentioned by another mom is definitely a try - our daughter is used to darkness for naps and sleeping, so when we moved into a new house, the first curtains I put up were her room darkening ones (not pretty, but so what!). She varies between 7:30-9am for waking up and we put her down at 9.

As for morning sickness, the remedies I don't see listed are watermelon (I ate a ton of it and then we read that there is some ingredient that helps - you can even make slushies and salads with it), sour anything (Sour Patch kids, lemonade), etc.

Good luck! Let us know what works!

I used raw almonds, ginger candy, & peppermint tea. The almonds worked the best for me. My sister in law just used any hard candy (ie: Jolly Ranchers, lifesavers)that you can let dissolve in your mouth.

Hi B.,
Sounds like you are having a rough time! Have you tried room-darkening shade(s) on his windows? That may help. Also, is he a good napper? If not, you may want to try getting him to bed a little earlier--weird as it sounds--to get him to sleep in longer in the morning.
If you absolutely cannot get him to sleep longer, I guess you'll have to set your alarm for earlier to give you a little extra time in the morning. I feel like you do--I need a little time to myself in the morning before my son wakes up! (Not because of morning sickness, just because it's how I operate!) Good luck, hang in there.
p.s.. Congratulations on your new-to-be arrival!

Morning sickness is a bummer but hopefully it will end. I used to drink diet ginger ale.
My son started to wake early around that age too. He's almost 2 now. We Put up dark curtains over his shades and he sleeps til almost 8 now. Sometimes 8:30! It was 6:45 and the next day with the dark room was 8. We just spent 3 days at my sisters and he got up at 6:30 because the room was lit in the morning by the sun. I'll take a sheet to hang up next time I visit! I am 29 weeks pregnant now and wish you the best luck!!

I have no advice on the sleep schedule. That is surely one of our weaker points.

As for the ms. With my first, I lived on Fireballs. With the 2nd, that did nothing and it was an all day thing. The suggestions I got from the dr's office were peppermints (they suggested I dissolve them in water & drink it). The other thing I used that saved my butt was Bonine. It is a motion sickness thing you can buy at any drugstore. I would chew one in the morning (w/ an oreo 'cause they tasted like crap) and one at night. Totally got rid of it all!

I don't think your request or situation sounds odd at all. Would you be able to bring your son into your bed with you in the morning until you feel better able to get up and move about? Maybe he could watch a video if you have a tv in your room. Or maybe you could set up a sleeping bag on the floor with some books/quiet toys that could keep him occupied.

A couple things that helped me in the morning in addition to sipping cold water and nibbling crackers was putting cold compresses on my forehead and neck. I set a bowl of ice water on my nightstand before going to bed so it was ready when I woke up. I also used sea bands to get me through the day. Good luck to you and congratulations!

I know for me, morning sickness didn't really kick in too much until 8 weeks. I was never really severe with it, but it was mostly isolated between 8-13 weeks for me. Perhaps it's not just your son waking earlier, but also you are hitting a more intense part in your pregnancy.

I don't have any new remedies for you, as you said you've tried most of my methods (saltines and herbal tea worked for me). And I don't have any ideas on how to change your son's sleep schedule. When my oldest was about 15 mos old he started sleeping until about 10 am. The 1st morning he did that I freaked because I thought he was dead! Then I got to sleep in on my days off for a whole month! Then, right back to his normal 7 or 7:30. No reason, no explanation, and no more extra sleep for me! But I also wanted to share a funny story about my morning sickness with a toddler. When my son was around 15-16 mos old I found out I was pregnant, and right away started again with the morning sickness. One day, as I kneeled over the toilet heaving, my son toddled in, saw me, leaned over to look in the toilet, and started to imitate me! I didn't know whether to continue vomiting, cry, or laugh hysterically! I chose to laugh so that I didn't scare him, but from that day on he would walk around the house imitating the sounds he heard. I hope you get some good advice.

I feel your pain :o) I can always tell when I am pregnant because I get morning sickness immediately...probably at conception!

Sea sickness bands worked for me. I got mine at a boating supply store but you can probably get them at other places too. I also found lemon flavored things worked well too. I got Decaf Lemon tea and drank it all the time. And I had lemon hard candies.

Is there anyway your son can entertain himself for a few minutes in his crib/bed until you get a little food in you?? Keep the saltines by the bed and have some before you even get up. Have your hubby leave you a glass of water before he leaves in the morning. At least you will get a little something into you.

Good luck!!

Here's an idea, it worked for me when I had my second baby. I put my then 22 month old into a toddler bed. We have a baby gate at the top of our steps. I taught her to get out of bed and come into my room to get me. She then climbed into bed with me and we had some cozy time before we had to get the day started. That gave me some wake up time to get my saltines and ease into the morning. Those 2 kiddos are now 4 1/2 and 3 y/o and baby #3 is 3 weeks old. I have learned that a new routine can be learned in a week to two at the most. Good luck!!

My daughter often switches her sleeping schedule around on me too, and all I can tell you is that it usually goes back to normal eventually!
As for morning sickness, I actually had hyperemesis, which is severe nausea and vomiting. I assume you're not vomiting a lot and you feel better as the day goes on? Someone mentioned vitamin B6, and what is supposed to work even better for nausea is B6 together with Unisom. Didn't help me a whole lot, but again mine was very severe, and I was even on an anti-vomiting presription pill. Anyway, ask your dr. about it. Hope you start feeling better!

I had really bad morning sickness when I was pregnant. I need to have ice cold water and crackers at my bedside as soon as I woke up. Maybe your husband can get it and bring it to your nightstand when he is getting ready in the morning.

Oooh! I feel for you!
I would put a granola bar or saltines etc right by your bed so no matter what time it is, you eat it before you get up. Food is definitely the best cure for morning sickness-soaking up the acid in your stomach. I was nibbling constantly for my whole 3rd month with my second-the minute my stomach was empty, I was sick as a dog. It's hard, because you don't feel like eating when you feel sick, but it really helps, as you know. Nothing else worked for me either, just keeping a little food in my stomach all the time. It also helped me gain less weight than with my first (no morning sickness with her), because I wasn't so famished at meal time.
The BEST TRICK for heavy long sleep for your son at night is to make sure he eats all he can possibly eat all day long. My little man has been sleeping heavily 10-12 hours a night since he was three months old with that valuable trick I learned from my step sister. My two year old sleeps from 10pm to 10am without waking up ever. Not just right before bed, but feed him a ton (healthy of course) all day long. Babies/toddlers won't overeat, but they will sometimes eat less than they need and not show any signs, which makes them sleep lightly or wake up at night/early.
I would even put him to bed later if it will make him sleep later. But the food is the real ticket.
GOOD LUCK I hope you don't suffer long!
