New Puppy Name

We are getting a new female German Shorthair Pointer in April and we are searching for a dog name!!! We currently have the same breed, she is 4, named Ruby (her birthday is in July, although that was not the first thought when we came up with her name). She is a hunting dog and our new one will be as well. I want something with some meaning behind it and unique, but my hubby keeps shooting everything down. Right now, one that we may choose has a spade shaped mark on her neck, so I thought of Spade (got a no!) and I am still trying for Artemis (goddess of hunting), but that is not going well either. I would love to hear any suggestions!!

What can I do next?

I like theme names. All of our animals have botanical names. Lily, Daisy, Violet, Petunia.

So in your case, since you already have Ruby, I suggest Sapphire, Opal, Jade, Emerald (Emmy?), Amethyst (Amy?), Pearl... you get the idea! :)

Xena.
Like the tv show.
I mean, how can your Husband shoot down that "girl" name?
Its not frou-frou or girlie sounding and is a warrior name?
Xena on tv, was a real warrior woman!

Tell your Husband, to think of a name too, since all he does is shoot down the names others come up with.

Whatever you choose...make sure it's something you're OK with yelling outdoors for the whole world to hear! My mom had an ornery, half-feral cat called "Icehouse" after the way the cat was found (as a kitten born in an old railroad ice house, for real). It was funny because at that time a beer called "Ice House" was popular....so she was calling "Ice Hooooouse" out the back door each night.....
The spade-shaped mark could also look like an arrowhead, right? Maybe "Arrow." Sounds like a strong hunting-dog name to me. Or any short, strong German name like Greta. I also know a dog called Sasha and that sounds strong and yet is feminine.

As a breeder (13 years in Rhodesian Ridgebacks) I have a TON of fun naming my pups & helping my puppy owners come up with names also. If your breeders register, find out what the registered names of the sire & dam are, you can play off that. For example, my boy Euro (got his callname because the whole litter was named after money, the mom was "Penny") has a registered name Oluchi Legend Has It, because his father is Tubila That's My Story (Oluchi & Tubila are kennel names).
My first RR I wanted a special name, so she was Chablis, & registered as "Touch of Class".
I like your idea of Artemis, go onto the baby name sites & do searches for names with certain meanings, in different languages, or just pull up the names & read through what different ones mean. If you husband has a callname he really likes, maybe you can use it & create a meaningful registered name off of it.

Going with your Gemstone theme how about a name of a brown Gemstone? (To go with Ruby) Since the pictures that I found online of that breed all seem to have brown as their primary color. There is Jasper, Amber, Topaz, Smokey Quartz and Zircon. Some Diamonds, Opals and Sapphires are also brown. Some cultures consider the brown Sapphire the birthstone of April.
I am not a hunter so, is there something specific that your husband hunts with the dog? Maybe think in the direction of what he is hunting, special tools or name of the place he likes to hunt. etc.
Good Luck!

OMG.

No offense to you, whatsoever, but my sister has always had dogs and she frets over their names like she's naming a child. I'm serious.
She has to have a first and middle name, and of course, they have to sound right with their last name.

I've had a zillion pets and once I had kids, alot of the time, I let them choose the name. We had a cat named Lillian, Spooky, Bellah, a bunny named Sharona after the character on the show "Monk", bunnies named Chocolate and Cookie, birds named Sunny, Sugar, Pepper, Tiki, Sparky.

My mom just got the cutest little baby puppy. She'll never weigh more than 6 pounds. My mom named her Tink and my sister had a fit. But, you know what? That name totally fits her. My sister didn't think it was "creative" enough.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest you consider the name April.
It's a beautiful name, in my opinion, and it will have meaning because that's when she is going to become a wonderful part of your family.

Try not to over-think it.

I suggest "April".

Best wishes!!!!!!!!!

It is hard for us to choose for you since you want a name that has meaning...and we don't know you or what would be meaningful to you and yours....but...

We choose our animal names from characters from our favorite fiction books or characters from our favorite movies. Such as, my big bad dog's name is Brooks, b/c he was SO mellow (still is) when we bought him and Brooks is the name of the animal lover and sweet old man from the movie 'Shawshank Redemption'...our other choice for him was 'Major', as in 'The Major' who is a complete bad a$$ from Green St. Hooligans, another family favorite. Both were fitting but Brooks won out b/c he is the epitome of calm submissive and Brooks from the movie was a complete softy.

We also have a really pretty cat named 'LeLu' from our all time family favorite movie 'The Fifth Element'!

My sister's family on the other hand names all their pets after the street from where they were born...so they have a 'Rowan' and a 'Hoffman'.

Just keep at it, I am sure you will come up with something!

Good Luck and congrats on the new addition..puppies are so very cute!

We've had 4 GSPs in our married life and waited until we met them to see what their personalities were like--then we name accordingly!

And we normally stick to 2 syllables for ease of calling in the field and training. Good Luck--we have loved our GSPs and they are great hunters!!

I love Artemis! He could call her "Artie" for short, although maybe that's a little masculine. I think Ruby and Artie sound really cute together. When I named my puppy 2 1/2 years ago I was amazed by all of the online resources for pet names. You can do Google searches by theme--unique, creative, by gender, by nationality/ethnicity, by color, etc. My current dog's name (Remy) came from a baby naming book; it is a French man's name. I have seen it used for females too (usually Remi). There are a lot of hunting dogs named Remy for Remington, but I didn't even think of that until we went to puppy kindergarten and there were two Remy/Remis in the class--my mini poodle and a hunting Brittney Spaniel!

I like the idea of using a theme, such as a German name like Greta or another jewel. I've had dogs named after Norse Gods (Loki and Freya) and dogs named after cities/locations. Find a German city you like the sound of? Consult the breeder and see if her line has any family names or themes? I like to limit dog names to two syllables--it seems easiest for calling them and for training. I would consult baby naming books and lists and check out all of the online resources if you haven't already. Congrats on your new puppy.
