New to Southaven-Seeking Help

My husband and I have just moved to Southaven about 3 weeks ago from Northern Cal. So far we love it here, but we really miss our friends. I am 36 work at home mom (very part-time work) with 2 boys ages 8 months and my second son is almost 3.

We have joined the Children's museum in Memphis and the YMCA in Olive Branch. We have never attended church but certainly not against joining a fellowship. It seems as most of the people I meet (neighbors and strangers at parks) do attend church but since I have never really been associated with any one denomination, maybe you can recommend some I should visit. I would also like to have my soon to be 3 year old participate in a Mother's Day out program and would appreciate any recommendations or experiences with local MDO programs. I have heard about Colonial Hills, Carriage Hills, Longview and a Presbyterian church in Hernando, but I am just overwhelmed where to start.... could be due to sleep deprivation, but I feel I need to get on the ball for my children. Any advice on getting started is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I feel your pain! We have attended church all our lives, and it was still VERY overwhelming for us after a move. I attend Carriage Hills right now (although we're about to move to Arkansas). I've been to Colonial Hills. At Colonial Hills there are lots of kids, but I don't know how easy it is to find a whole family of friends. At Carriage Hills there is a nice, very welcoming group of parents around your age with kids about the age of yours. Our second Sunday there we had an invitation to lunch with the gang, and we have very quickly established friendships.

As for MDO, I know Carriage Hills has one, but I don't know much about it. I have worked for five and a half years at the Mother's Day Out at First Evangelical Church in Memphis (at Ridgeway and Poplar). That has been an absolutely incredible experience for my family! We are currently full for the summer, but registration is underway for the fall term beginning in August. As soon as we get our contracts in from the current families (today and Thursday), we'll be able to determine our numbers and start calling down on waiting list. I have no idea how the numbers are looking so far, but if you want to call and check the number is ###-###-####.

Welcome to the area. I would first like to extend an invitation to my church,New Dicrection Christian Church. The services are uplifting and fun. Christ the Rock Church offers an execellent MDO. Both of these churchs are in Memphis on Winchester Rd so finding them would be easy. (directions to both from Southaven)Take I55 to I240 to 385 the get off on Ridgeway exit(rt) to Winchester Rd turn lt go dirve into parking lot just past 2nd traffice light New Driection is on your left.Sunday services are 8:30am and 10:30am. For Christ the Rock past the Ridgeway exit on 385 and go to the Hacks Cross Rd exit and go left to Winchester Rd turn rt go east until you pass the Fedx World Center and Nike continue on for about another quarter mile, you'll see Christ the Rock on the left. I am sure you will enjoy both. You can email me at ____@____.com any time.

WOW! How awesome to have you here! I know you'll love the Children's Museum and the YMCA. I would also recommend a family membership to the zoo. It's $79 and is wonderful! WE LOVE THE ZOO!

Moving is overwhelming. I know friendships can be difficult to establish. We moved here around 5 years ago and I thought I would never adjust. Now I love the area and have a wonderful group of friends. These friendships were developed through our church. We attend Trinity Baptist Church on Swinnea in Southaven (close to McAlister's Deli). I was raised Baptist, so we knew that was what we wanted. We have a wonderful fellowship class. We have (usually) two "socials" a month- one with the family and kids, and one for just the adults. We eat out together after the Sunday service. It's a great group. I'd love to tell you more or answer any questions you have. Feel free to email me ____@____.com. :)

Hi K.. Welcome to the area. We moved to Southaven in October from Oklahoma. That is wonderful that you have plugged in at a few places so far. We are also members at the Y. There is a wonderful non-denominational church that I recently joined. Its called Life Fellowship www.mylifefellowship.com
The nursery is great. Services start at 10. It is in Olive Branch right off of Goodman rd. Have you seen the new Target on Goodman? The first light past that going toward Olive Branch, turn Left, its about a half mile down. My almost 2 year old and I go to the Y all the time, so if you ever want to meet up let me know. My son loves to swim. I also get together with a group of stay at home moms during the week for play dates. You are more than welcome to join us. We go to different parks and do different activities. The children range from 6 months to about 4 years.

Good luck and I hope that you find what you are looking for!
