Newborn with No Social Security Number and Doctor Wanting Paid Upfront

My granddaughter had her baby a week ago. The baby and mom's have two different blood types. The baby has to see a pediatric doc for bilirubin levels. The doctor's office refused to file on insurance though the baby has been added. My granddaughter is taking 4 weeks off work without pay and has no extra money. The office manager insists on money upfront (2nd time in a week), and will not allow the baby to be seen without it. My granddaughter didn't have it (paid up front first time) but this is her grocery money for the next 2 weeks she is paying so had to walk out today. Is this normal procedure to charge full fee until the social security number is received. The insurance verified the baby is covered. What else can my granddaughter do?

Thanks for your help!
Sandy

No, this is not normal. Obviously the baby wouldn't have a ss yet. That's ridiculous. That wouldn't prevent them from filing. Wow, find a different pedi!

If the baby is added on the insurance then the doctor's office should be able to verify this through the insurance (though it may take some time to process). I'd find a new doctor and ask them upfront about this issue.

It is the doctor's right to refuse to see a patient, I would find a different doctor.

In our office we prefer but do not require social security numbers plus the number we need is that of the insured. At least that is the case with private insurance if you are talking about some government based that is a whole different story.

Oh and even in the case of government based insurance it is not required when it is not possible.

Really it sounds like the doctor doesn't want her as a patient for whatever reason, just find another one.

No, this is not normal. It takes 16 weeks to get a social security number. Find another pediatrician.

So sorry,
Dawn

Did she tell the insurance company about this? Maybe they can call the doctors office and get it straightened out?

I have never had this issue with any of my 3 children!! If you insist on staying with that doctor I'd call their financial department and speak with someone there. Obviously if the baby has been verified by the insurance company as being covered you should only be responsible for any co pays that are required!! But if it were me I'd look into a new doctor, good luck!!

Something is not right. SSN has nothing to do with it as long as insurance
was verified. Might want to consider another doctor.

She should find a different doctor. I don't even think mine has my kids numbers on file. I remember asking if they needed it when filling out the form they give you before the visit and they were like "nah it's OK". As long as she has her insurance card that should suffice.

If she's on the insurance, it shouldn't matter on the SSN. I would find another doctor's office.

I'd look for a new doctor. You can't force the doctor to treat your great grandbaby.

Call around and find a doctor who will work with her on this issue.

Congrats on the new arrival!
