I need some help but would like to be informed first. Wwhat is the average cost of a housekeeper? How much do you pay them, by the hour or by the house? What should I expect for that? I am in need of someone once a week. Any referrals would be great.

What can I do next?

It depends on how much of a clean you're looking for. Someone who is inexperienced I would probably pay by the hour or say that you only need them for 3 hours and will pay them $30 and leave a list for them to do. If they are more experienced, they will charge you by the house. When I first started, I cleaned houses for $10/hour, got as much from the list done in 4 hours. The women I cleaned for would list everything according to priority. And there are certain things I just would not do. I don't wax/polish wood furniture, don't wash sheets, don't pick up children's messes, don't do dishes....you have to determine what you're wanting done. My mother has been cleaning for years and charges $100 per house, regardless of how long it takes. She does not follow a list or do odd jobs but does the same things every week...dusting, windexing, vacuuming, moping, bathroom toilet, tub, shower and counters, and the kitchen appliances and counters, as well as all floors whether carpet, wood, or tile. If there's a mess of toys, she cleans around it. She treats every house the same and has only made one exception for a woman with MS who can't move very well. So sit down and really determine what your needs are, then decide what you're willing to pay.

Companies or professional services will charge a weekly fee, which could be $50-100 per week depending on the size of your house. In Salt Lake and its suburbs, you would expect to pay $15 per hour or more (someone who charges $15 will fill up their schedule from word of mouth references very quickly). It would most likely be a Spanish speaker with limited english skills, but who understands basic cleaning jargon. We LOVE our $15/hr. housekeeper. She works fast and does a great job. I have heard complaints of services that send 2 people who work side by side... that they talk the whole time and are not as on task as they should be. I guess that is just a couple peoples' experience. I would check craigslist or local classifieds and be sure to check references if you can't afford the price of the professional services. Good luck! : )

I tried a single housekeeper several times but that never worked out for me. I have now used the same cleaning Service, The Cleaning Authority, for 6 years and love them (I am picky!).
They come once a week and rotate the "bigger jobs" ie, baseboards, etc. but do all the basics every week. It is 87.00 and totally worth it. They are faster than having a single person in your home for hours. It is possible to get "emotionally invested" in a single housekeeper and her life, problems, etc. and sometimes more difficult to let her know when you have a problem with her work. I believe this is avoided by using a service but there are exceptions of course.
Spend more time with your children and let someone else clean!

Hi J.,

My new sister-in-law has performed house cleaning in Denver, Colorado for upwards of 10-years. She just moved to Salt Lake recently to marry my brother. She is currently looking for homes to clean. She is nice, sweet and very honest. She is from Bolivia and speaks a little english. Her prices are very reasonable. I have considered having her help me with my home once a week as well. If you would like to contact her, her name is Evalyn Padilla and her phone number is ###-###-####, she currently lives in West Jordan.
