Older Children and Clothing Choices

We don't have the money to spend on expensive clothes for my kids. Much of what they were comes from Target, Kohls, or we go to an outlet store, like one for Aeropostale. My kids have been dressing themselves when they get up in the morning for years, and they've usually done a pretty good job. I choose not to fight this battle, so unless it's reeeaaaaally hideous, it flies with me.

I'm amused and curious all at the same time about a trend that has been going on in our house. Today, my daughter (12) came down and she had on aqua colored shorts and an aqua colored t-shirt. It actually worked, so I didn't say anything. Then, my son came down stairs wearing a grey shirt and grey shorts. (He complimented the ensemble with grey crocs.)

It dawned on me that they have been doing this more and more lately. What's up with the monochromatic dressing? I realize that there are many more important topics out there to contemplate, but has anyone had kids that do this? Did you say anything??

Thanks for your thoughts, Ladies!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I wrote this post partially tongue-in-cheek, but I'm telling you, I was alittle stumped by this! But thank you for your responses, I agree with all of you - as long as they are clean and somewhat put together, let 'em be themselves. Most of these posts made me laugh, I don't think I'll ever see pepto-bismal the same way and the whole black socks thing... yeah, that's a whole 'nother post, isn't it? Have a great weekend ladies!!

Sounds like they are doing just fine!!

My 15 yr old is quite the fashionista and I tend to not fight the battle.... unless....... she has her boobies pushed up too much, too much cleavage or butt cheeks showing.

Best wishes.

my kids are 6 and they chose and color coordinate their clothes. i have no say, i should say, i butt out when buying clothes. i want them to have their independence and dress the way they are and want to, granted, i choose the amount to spend.
the way we dress is important to me. i think it's a reflection of who we are. i have tried to instill that in my kids.

Not here in PA i don't think... or i bet my kids would be doing it. They are into the sophee (i think that is how you spell it) shorts. They are the short elastic shorts that come in a million colors. Camisole tank tops are pretty popular and flip flops :) I agree with the other mom, i don't worry unless it is too much cleavage or butt cheek! Not worth the battles.

First off, I don't spend a lot of money on my kids clothes either because it's pointless. They wear for one season and then tired of it or have stained it or something, so don't feel bad about that. You can buy really trendy cute stuff without spending a fortune, esp. if you shop at the right time, right? Anyway, my 13 yo daughter doesn't really do that, in fact she'll wear some stuff together I never would think goes and it looks really cute on her. My 10 yo cares a lot less about clothes and never knows what matches, so she'll wear mono. colors, or try to until her sister finds her something she thinks looks better:), but I dont think it really matters as long as they don't look too sloppy or immodest. Let them be themselves. Just my observations. Hope it helps.

My son is 10 and very aware of his 'look', lol. He is not label-conscious and will wear things from Target or Old Navy or more expensive stores- as long as they fit the way he wants to dress, which is a sort of rocker/skater style.

I try to always respect that- as long as he is clean and his clothes do not have any trashy sayings or slogans on them, etc ( which he would never wear anyway) I am fine with it. Same with his hair- as long as his grades are good, he is polite and does his chores, he can do whatever he wants with his hair as long as it is kept clean.

I haven't noticed any monochromatic dressing though! Maybe this is just a fad at your kids' school? Those seem to come and go pretty fast!

Not really with mine (12 yo girl) but around 2 months ago they had to go in pink for something at school, and when she came out of her room she had a big pink bow on her head, a big pink necklace, a pink shirt, a pink skirt, a pink belt, pink socks and pink shoes!!
All I could think is pepto-bismol, lol.
I told her that I thought it was to hot for the socks and that maybe she would want to leave the necklace for a more special occasion.
Other than that I let her be.
