My friend mentioned the Paleolithic diet in passing so I looked it up.

To me it really just looks like a low carb diet. How would you say their different, how would you say they are similar?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm allergic to tree nuts so this is not something I could do if I wanted too plus I love cheese.

I had never heard of it and was wondering.

Very interesting Scarlett. I was looking on that home page and level one is a lot of nuts. What did you eat that first 2 weeks if not nuts? On the forum page there were discussions about nut allergies but I couldn't access them.

My friend is really interested in this program. She has numerous health problems and things it's a possible lifestyle change for her. I hadn't heard of it but did see some similarities.

Hubby did low carb where he didn't eat any carbs during the day then could eat anything he wanted for one hour in the evening. He could eat entire bags of M&M's...lol. He lost a lot of weight on it. It wasn't something I would like though. I wouldn't mind cutting carbs but I'm not so extreme.

I truly think we should eat like our bodies were meant eat. We are carnivores. I don't have anything against vegetarians, I could do without meat but love cheese and dairy. I do believe that low carb diets without any artificial sweeteners and fats are better for us.

queen of the castle, what a good article!

My fil does low carb and he's had quadruple bypass. That was before his diet change to low carb. His cholesterol was near 300 on average and his triglycerides were even higher. He was borderline diabetic too.

When he told his cardiologist he was going to start doing the low carbs the doc told him he'd be dead within 6 months.

It's been over 12 years now. His cholesterol is down near 200 and the triglycerides are back in the normal range too. His blood sugars are low to normal now too.

He is very strict about how many carbs he eats too. I think it's very very low, like maybe less than 50. He is healthier and weighs in on the low side of his suggested normal weight. He turned out very well from changing his lifestyle.

His cardiologist has actually put a few people on the low carb diet when they weren't responding to traditional meds and stuff and they are doing well too.

This or any other change may not work for everyone for sure. But he's doing very well doing low carbs even with a major heart issue.

Thanks for posting that article, it was very informative.

I eat paleo (or at least try to) for the majority of my meals. The idea behind paleo is to eat the way our human body was intended to eat for health purposes, not as a "diet" to lose weight. Although, it may have a weight loss effect on some people. With me, it didn't, because I was ill and underweight. Paleo keeps my digestive juices flowing the right way!

Paleo allows carbs in the form of healthy carbs if they can be tolerated - carrots and hummus, sweet potatoes, fruit, nuts etc. No enriched white bread, no wheat for that matter. With paleo, we try to steer clear of sugars, dairy, legumes, etc. With low carb, dairy is highly consumed if tolerated by the individual.

My personal opinion of paleo is that we try to eat REAL food - no processed. Low carb, so long as it is low carb is going to be considered "ok" by the definition of the "diet" - for example, a low carb granola bar created for the atkins diet. (I have nothing against either, but this is just my opinion of the difference).

They definitely have their overlaps - low/no carbs, tend to result in weight loss and health overall.

ETA: Sure you could still do it, just don't eat the tree nuts. My main meals consist of a meat and veggie - fruit too, just less often. I don't consume nuts daily. You wouldn't believe how much better you feel.

ETA: I have no idea what home page you are referring to, nor do I know about any "first two weeks of nuts". I simply gathered a few paleo books, printed off a few recipes, did my research as to what paleo was and what would make my body healthier, and then began to eat that way.

There are so many "diets" or trendy ways to eat.

The bottom line is, to eat healthy.
Balanced.
In a common sense way.
Not going to extremes.

My Hubby, who was a meat and potatoes guy, (despite that I cook healthy), recently has been eating healthier and more "vegetarian" like.
And just doing that, and being more cognizant of eating healthy... he has gotten healthier and lost weight. But losing weight, was not his point. He just wanted to get more healthy and eat more healthy and balanced. And a side benefit of that was that he lost weight. Which is good for him. And he feels better and looks better too!

A diet is a diet is a diet. Unless it is something you can keep doing for life they are all the same waste of time and energy. JMO.
