For those who did not read my previous post - I'm having a birthday party for my almost 5 y/o this weekend, and I hired a children's D.J. Do you think it would be okay if the D.J. plays Gangnam Style? My son loves that song. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I think it's fine. My youngest goes to a K-2 school and that song is played at all of their party-type functions. You can ask if the DJ has a g-rated version that doesn't include the sexy lady line but even if he doesn't, I think it's fine.

ETA I just googled this and you can get a Kidz Bop version and have the DJ play that if you really have an reservations.

Personally, I wouldn't play a song at a 5 year old's birthday party with the word "sexy" in it.

That's just me.

ETA: I don't find the word "sexy" to be offensive. Nor am I an "uptighter." My boys listened to Fergie songs at that age. But I respect the fact that other children will be attending and I should not make parenting decisions for them. I'm simply being mindful of others.

It's possible there's a "kids remix" version - ask the DJ if that exists if you want to see if you can "take the sexy out" for others.

Otherwise, let it play. It's his favorite, and it's not like "Super Freak" by Rick James - my grandmother HATED that song when I was a teen LOL

I wanted to be able to incorporate my MS students' favorite music into my classroom, but since so much of it has inappropriate lyrics, I really couldn't. Then I got on YouTube and found that there are instrumental versions of the actual songs, so I would download them into keepvid.com and put them in my iTunes. Now, if we want to have a party play mix, they can listen to the music without the lyrics being an issue at all. It's been a great compromise! You could do this or ask the DJ to. I have found DJs don't have much sense or discretion here, so maybe be proactive an do your own playlist if he won't go the "instrumental only" route.

I personally would not have an issue with it but then... I am not wound up quite as tightly as some people.

I believe you can have clean fun with dance music. We've had DJ's before and they play the "clean" version of the song if the lyrics are inappropriate in any way.

I've also been at functions when someone would leave over something most people consider silly. You do what is best for you and your family and don't worry about the uptighters.

What really amazes me is that some people find the word "sexy" so offensive but then they let their children play video games and watch violent movies where people are killed and blood/guts are everywhere.

I'd much rather my daughter see a naked butt, boob or hear the word sexy than see all the violence.

Let's put it this way. "Gangnam Style" has the phrase "Hey, sexy lady" sung umpteen times. My boys, age 2-6, pick up phrases very easily and I really don't want them going around singinging that. Does the DJ's version have that phrase? If so, I wouldn't want my kids to hear it. It doesn't matter how many times you tell a 2 or 4 year old not to sing those words--once they hear it, and pick it up, that's pretty much it.

Both my LOs love that song and tries to mimic the dance. Funny thing - it was my 5 year old that told me about it and showed me the "gangnam style" dance and my youngest is always asking for a "dance party." Sounds like a fun party =)

Personally I wouldn't care, it's a favorite in my house. It's even my ringtone lol

It was recently played at a wedding for my nephew and everyone, from 1 to 60 got up and danced to it.

It wouldn't bother me but the safe thing would be to ask for the clean kids mix which states "hey, ANY lady...." Lol

I wouldn't play it. It would definitely be offensive to some parents. I really DIDN'T mind my kids listening to it, but now my Kindergartener is walking around singing, "Hey Sexy Lady!" all the time! He also told a little girl at school that she was a sexy lady and got in trouble.

Since he got in trouble, he know wants to know what "Sexy" means and that one's a hard thing to explain. I told him it meant that someone was pretty or handsome but only for grown ups.

If you can find the clean version, I would go with that. If someone is so uptight that they get offended, then that's their own problem, not yours!

For some additional ideas: Play "Whip It" or "Working in a Coalmine" by DEVO! "Working for the Weekend" by Loverboy. Anything that makes to wiggle in your seat!

do you knopw whats funny. i would be more ok with my daughter singing a curse word in a song BUT i hate when kids use the word sexy or sing it. i find it innapropriate...probably because its a word they do grasp and imitate and it J. seems bad to M..

I allow my daughter to listen to more music that most of my friends ranging from pop to punk to everything in between and there are curses and sometimes the word sexy but she knows not to sing the word sexy because i find it innapropriate

anyway when friends are over if their parents are there we ask if certain songs are ok if the parents arent there i air on the side of caution and wont play it
