Has anyone used a pediatric dentist here? Is it worth it? If so, any good ones to recommend?
I've been reading in the parenting magazines and books about the importance of taking your child to the dentist by age 1. I asked my dentist about it and she said he doesn't need to come in until he's 3.
Thanks!
Thanks for all the great responses! I still haven't taken my son to the dentist yet but my plan now is to wait until he is two, which seems like a good compromise to me. My pediatrician told me that the new recommended age is two (from the American Association of Pediatricians). And when we finally go, I'll have lots of great pediatric dentists to choose from!
Thanks again!

What I do know is that you should check out Dentist that are Mercury Free, or Holistic, it only makes sense if Fish is not good with mercury then your mouth is not a good place for mercury as well.

I take my kids (8&4) to Dr. Patricia Ridgeley in Tualatin. I would recommend a pediatric dentist just because they are more familiar with the smaller bodies, attitudes, fears, etc. and have the equipment/experience to deal with it. However, she also doesn't recommend having them come in until they are 3-4 yrs old. Our pediatrician checks their teeth too and would recommend seeing the dentist if anything was out of sorts. Just call the office and see what they recommend.
a check-up wouldn't be a bad idea, even tho they may not clean your son's teeth. some kids are born with a lack of enamel or other special situations which are best caught early. it also gives your little one time to adjust to the dentist visits when the time comes that they actually have to stick stuff in their mouth. my first daughter did very well at the dentist but my younger one is just now starting to let them scrape after 3 visits. not without some protest but she settles down and lets them look. for the first time, they'll probably have you sit with your child facing you on your lap and then have your child lie on your lap and then the dentist can get a look in his mouth. good luck!
Dr. Eric Downey is the BEST, especially if your child has any special issues. He is dedicated to making children feel comfortable at the dentist. If you have a special-needs child, as I do, he has the expertise to deal with that. Good luck.

Dr. Stapleton is a family friend of ours, and a long-time pediatric dentist on the west side. Highly recommended!
My husband is a dentist and he would suggest at least 3 years old if not a little older. These visits are mostly about learning that the visit to the dentist isn't scary. Our kids didn't "officially" have their first visit to sit in the "big chair" at daddy's office until they were about four. Hope this helps!

Dr. Pike in Portland Oregon is wonderful! The environment is completely kid-friendly and my 5 year old actually looks forward to going to the dentist!! His website is http://www.doctorpike.com/
My dentist says 3 is fine too. Unless there is something you are specifically concerned about I wouldn't sweat it. I took my son when he was 18 months, and he hated it and as I recall they didn't really do much besides sit him in the chair. So I waited until he was 3 to take him back and things went much better the second time around.
I don't go to a pediatric dentist per se, but we really like ours and he is great with the kids. His Name is Dr. Timothy Shannon and he is in SE on Johnson Creek. He also says they don't need to come in before 3.
Oh, and BTW, Hi D.! Hugs to all of you!

I have been taking my kids to Dr. Stafford (Kaiser Glisan) since thye were about 3. I should have taken my son in earlier as his teeth were bad, inspite of all my brushing and the floride vitamins. I actually took my daughter in at 2 becasue of the same thing. I think he is an excellent Pediatric Dentist and I would highly recommend him if you have Kaiser Dental insurance.
He is very no-nonsense and will get the job done, but it still sensitive to the abilities of the age. His staff is also excellent.
My daughter had a "teeth incident" when she was only 18 months so we have been to 3 pediactric dentist since then. Hands down Dr. Cavano, he is the best and his assistants are wonderful!! He talked through all the opptions for us and the expense, he isnt arrogant (the second one we went to was!) Just a great guy who seemed to like kids!

Although my second daughter, who is 3 now was considered too young to have her teeth cleaned at 2 1/2 but had them fully cleaned for the first time when she was 2 months shy of 3. I would try to take them sooner than later, we already had cavities at 2 years old and we brush every day!
Hope some of that was helpful!

We like Dr. Alan Pike Pediatric Dentistry for Children which is up on Sylvan hill.
I would strongly recommend a pediatric dentist. I took my daughter to my dentist and it was a nightmare. She was 4 and I thought it would be fine. I think she found it overwhelming and she cried a lot. Then I took her to the pediatric dentist in my neighborhood and the experience was amazingly different. There were toys and the staff were patient and let her sit up a bit. By the way, if anyone is looking for a pediatric dentist in Portland Dr Pelley is great! She is in Sellwood and I could't recommend her more!
