Pee Regression While Traveling?

Hi there,

So, my 2 year, 10 month old (she'll be 3 in Sept.) has had two night time accidents and two daytime accidents in the past week. She has been completely potty trained for about 6 months. We've just started a 5 week vacation to visit family and friends far from home (we're living in Rome and visiting California). We just arrived on Monday night so maybe she's out of sorts from the jet lag (9 hour time difference) and the huge changes of being so far away from home? Her Daddy stayed behind for two weeks to work but she understands that he will be joining us. She seems very happy to be here, is loving playing with her grandparents.

I'm freaking out because we'll be sleeping in 3 hotels, at two friends' houses, and with her other grandfather in the next 4-5 weeks. Should I put her back in a diaper at night? I asked her if she wanted to do that and she said, "no, because I'm a big girl". Poor thing! I'm not mad at her, just don't know how many more loads of laundry and middle of the night clean-ups I can manage! I've already bought a waterproof mattress cover that we'll be bringing with us everywhere, but I still don't want her peeing all over everyone's bedding!

Has anyone had this happen after long trips? Or long stays away from home? Any suggestions? She has been peeing just fine the rest of the time so I doubt it's a urinary track infection, but I guess I should consider that?

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!

H.

She is very young and this is a big trip with lots of changes, fatigue, etc. I wouldn't think that it's a UTI.

I used to explain to my son that his nighttime undies (diaper) were for protection just in case there might be a little accident. That mommy wanted him to stay dry and comfy and not wet (insert name's) bed. I always stressed that it was just in case.

You could always put her panties on over the diaper.

In my experience, transitional times of any type (travel, new daycare, new sibling, etc.) are notoriously bad for potty training regression. I would buy some overnight pull ups and just explain to her that these are special for when you're not at home. Promise her she can switch back at home because you know she's a big girl.

one thing we do is we always take her potty seat with us, so she knows it's her potty. We visited my grandma for a week once and she refused to poop for 5 days!

I think pull ups at night would be a good idea, until her body adjusts to the different time zones and whatever.

They make disposable pads you can put under her sheets to protect the mattress. She will not even know it is there, so she will still feel like a big girl. If you can not find them anywhere then just get a water proof mattress cover for the time you are there.

just use a pull-up. it's like panties and it doesn't have to be a big deal. easy to change if it gets wet. if she questions it, just say it's only for this one travel time.

have a great trip
