Period Problems

Heres whats been going on....I had my period in March. April was hardly nothing few little spots and then gone and nothing for May. Took 2 urine tests, both were negative. Called the doc and had a blood test done....was negative. They wanted to put me on provera to start my period, but I chose not to and decided to see what happens for June. I think they need to run an ultrasound or something not just give me medicine. Obviously something is going on in there. Has anyone had this happen?

What can I do next?

OMG....I think you are talking about my life for the last 2 years. I am on provera, and would love to talk with you more. I do not take it every month, and they must do an ultrasound before they determine if provera is right for you.

This sounds very similar to what I had except that I went for than 3 months with wacky cylces and then ended up having a period for an entire month. Then they did an untrasound and ran a whole bunch of blood tests, when they couldn't find anything else to cause all of the cysts on my one ovary, they diagnosed me with Polycystic ovarian syndrome. It took 2 more months to get an appointment and they were going to put me on provera, until the doctor did a quick exam before he wrote the perscription. Are you lactating? Sounds crazy, I thought the doctor was crazy for a little bit too, until he squeezed my nipple. I was devistated, but I finally had a reason for the crazy cycles. He gave me a medication (can't remember the name) to stop the lactating. It never actually went away for me, but a regular cycle returned.

My guess is your doctor wants to try the provera to see if that will help first because an ultrasound is an expensive test and your cycles haven't been out of wack for that long. But if it you are really worried or have a family history, talk to him about it. Good Luck!

My sister has had this problem, and then heavy painful periods when they do come. Turns out she had some fibroids and other problems. I think if you are uncomfortable with just the med and want more testing first, you should push for it. Go with your instincts!

For years my periods were irregular and I was always told I had to be on the pill to correct it. After 20+yrs of on/off the pill, I stopped and my cycles were the worst ever - this time, I did research on supplements and decided to try them instead of the pill - within 3mos I was regular and feeling better than ever. After giving birth and stopped nursing, my cycles were odd again - I went back to the supplements and was regular within 1 month. I picked them up from my local Medicine Shoppe (where we purchase all of our supplements). I would recommend talking to a compounding pharmacist and trying supplements instead. Good luck!

I used to only get my period every 4 months. It was horrible because it was like 4 weeks of periods wrapped into one week. My doc said it was just that i was not ovulating as often as most people. They put me on birth control to see if that would regulate it. After 7 years on birth control I stopped taking the pill and my periods went back to normal for 3 months. Then they were wacked out again. My cycle would last anywher from 30 days to 150 days in between periods. They told me that is just how my body functioned.
After having my daughter, they pretty much stuck to 45-50 day cycles.
There may be nothing wrong except that your body just isn't producing the hormones every month to have a period.
Hope this helps.

Hi J.,

I have been going through a similar situation. I'm not sure if you're using birth control or not, but here's what my doctor told me. I had a normal period for a long time, while on the pill. Within the last few months, I have only been spotting or only like a day of period. I asked my doctor about this and she said that it is completely normal to hardly have a period while using birth control. Hope this helps. If you're not on birth control though, I'm clueless. I do know that stress and extreme weight loss can affect this though.

I use to go through this when I was younger as well as I had severe cramps that made it difficult to get out of bed. I went to see the Gyn she told me not to worry unless I miss three periods in a row. Later I went back for pain only this time I didn't see my doctor I saw a nurse practioner and she ordered pain medication and I had an ultrasound done and I was put on birthcontrol. First they told me I had endometriosis because I had alot of cysts on my ovaries and then later after blood work they said I had polycystic ovarian syndrome and she said I would never have a child on my own. Well now I have a daughter and she's for I get a period all the time but sometimes it lasts forever. I think you should press the issue for them to atleast do an ultrasound and maybe blood work.

Hello J.
I haven't had the problem of not receiving my period at all for a month and not being pregnant, but I have just gotten my period twice in one month.

I think you did the right thing to decline the Provera- especially if it was Depo Provera. Perhaps you should ask your OB/GYN to give you an pelvic ultrasound to make sure everything is alright. It could be nothing at all or fibroids.

I am a HPV survivor and it's always better to be safe than sorry and ask questions. Go with your gut feeling. I had to change my OB/GYN after having my2nd son because I felt they just wanted to medicate me, instead of get to the solution.
You know your body more than anyone else.
Take care

I personally skip periods, and have weird, off ones, when I am stressed. And the more I stress about it, the more late/skipped they are. It sounds ridiculous.

I think that there is nothing going on but a stress reaction, but please call your doctor and ask to discuss - in a calm, rational way - the issue. If you are not pregnant, but want to be, you are stressing about it and your body is diverting the stress to your uterus. There may be nothing unusual going on, but ask what the next step needs to be.

Also, keep in mind that an ultrasound, which runs anywhere from $300-600 may not be covered by your insurance.

Good luck
