Pet Grieving

Well, my new home is still doing great :)
Sadly our house lost a life last week, Sarah, the 17 year old cat.
She was buried under our japanese maple in the front yard, where she enjoyed to sleep in the sun.
But oh my gosh this past week has been so terrible with the other pets. Usually as a child when one of my pets died they'd go into the woods and we'd never see or hear of them again.
All our of pets are grieving! I have never seen this before. Its so sad. Reese, our pom, who usually doesn't hang around me to much, has surgically attached herself to me nearly. Zoey, who is Tristain's cat (Older brother) and usually likes absolutely no one but him, now sleeps with me every now and then and just seems in general distress. Its all so sad, thats only 2 out of our now 8.
Have any of you experienced pet grieving? Do you know how to make things more comfortable for the pets?

What can I do next?

Yes! When my one cat died from cancer her buddy (they had been buddies all their lives) grieved for a month. We finally had to get another cat, which she made her new buddy. They cuddle together and lick each other.

She did develop a nervous habit of over-licking herself and she now cries at our bedroom door every night (she never used to do this). We can't let her in because of my husband's allergies.

We use Rescue Remedy for pets. A few drops in the water dish, on their food or directly on their skin seem to calm them a little bit. It's a wonderful natural remedy and helps take the edge off.

Yes, I second the Rescue Remedy. It's also good for when you need to transport an especially nervous animal. It's natural and gentle. I'm sure your vet would agree. You could also try Calms Forte. It's for children, but should also be ok for pets. We can get these at our local grocery store in the organic section. If they start licking or ripping their hair out, it could trigger a type of allergic reaction. Again, I'd tell your vet and they sometimes prescribe a steroid to help stop the itching. The best thing is time, they just need to grieve for a while. Good luck, and sorry about your loss.

I lost my cat years ago. We didn't have any other pets and he was an indoor cat who would occasionally escape (I think that led to his passing). Anyway, right after he died there were like 5 cats hanging around the backyard area like they knew and were grieving. It was so weird.

YES! I had two cats, that we raised from a young cat age. This past Spring, one of them started peeing on stuff. The vet ruled out all the normal stuff such as no new food or litter, no UTI, no changes in the household. He was doing it so much that the vet didn't think he could control his pee anymore. I reluctantly had him put down to put him out of his misery. Every day after that I noticed the other was was going nuts. Since he was a senior cat and couldn't get around much, he ran the house like it was a race track. He was destroying the furniture, jumping on the table and counter tops and he'd never done that before. I knew he was missing his buddy. I felt I had no choice but to put him down too with his age. I think about them every day and miss them both so much but I knew it had to be done.

Yes, this is possible. My mom has two dogs and they are very attached to each other. If one of them is at the vet, or even just out for a walk, the other will cry until her "sister" returns. I can't imagine how bad it will be when one of them passes away. Just give your other pets extra love and pampering for awhile. They will probably get used to it in a couple of weeks.

Just love them, let them grieve, love them, snuggle with them, even talk with them about the loss of Sarah. It will pass, I'm sorry for your loss.
Medications can help, weird but they do have anti-depressents for animals.
Blessings

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Animals do grieve, our vet said to lavish them with extra attention for a couple of weeks as they got over the worst of it, but you can't stop there ; )

Yes, we have had this experience when one of our cats passed away. The Rescue Remedy is a staple in our home. If you can find a copy of the book " Joy in a Wooly coat" it's great.
So sorry for your loss.
