Hi moms-
I was wondering if there is any kind of get togathers for new moms? My baby is 5 weeks and we do not have any other friends with children so it makes it tough to go or do anything. Is there any kind of activities we can do as a family to meet new parents?

The best way to make friends with babies is to meet them at the park - but your little one is still tiny, plus this time of year sucks. In the spring and summer go to the park and you'll see other moms with tiny ones and it's a great way to strike up a friendship - that's how I met my best friend nearly 10 years ago - she was arriving at the park with her four year old and almost one year old and I was just about to leave with my boys exactly the same age. We just started talking - don't be shy because most people are really friendly (and I've got an English accent so probably seem a bit strange to some people!). Also, you could ask at the hospital where you delivered if they have any postnatal groups - or if you are breastfeeding, look up the local LaLeche League. Do you belong to a church or synagogue - perhaps they have a play group? I know you'll find some great friends soon.
Hi, At five weeks old I would not worry about socialization at all. Your baby needs your attention and alot of bugs/viruses go around the playgroups.
After we had our son, we joined a parenting group through beaumont hospital. It was free and we met a lot of great people. I would just call and have them hook you up with a group. They meet once every other week.
If you had your baby at Beaumont, or have a Beaumont pediatrician (my friend from my group had her baby at Providence, but got into our group through her peds office) there are parent-baby groups. day for SAHM and evenings for both parents to attend with baby.
If you had your baby at Beaumont, they have parent groups. We joined after my son's birth and love it. We still meet and our little ones are 19 months old. It really helps to have a support group that is going through the same things. I encourage you to contact Beaumont; I am not sure if you have to have had your baby there or not.
Also, seek out a mom's group at a local church (Mothers of preschoolers or MOPS).

We provide free childcare while the moms participate in an activity. go to meetup.com and type in your area code. It will give you some groups in the area that could benefit you. You could also call local libraries. They often have baby lap-sit reading time. At 5 weeks, your little one is still pretty little and may not got too much from anything, but as a new mom you'll probably enjoy the adult conversation from some of these programs.
I second the vote for meetup.com. I found a group of moms in my area that I really enjoy being a part of. At 5 weeks old, your daughter probably isn't going to get much out of the activites from a socialization standpoint - but you definitly will. It's hard to be a first time mom - and the winter months are even harder in my opinion - but having a group of new friends that are experiencing the same things that you are helps tremendously.
