PMS Is Making Me Feel Crazy, Are My Symptoms Normal?

I am 36 and having worse PMS than ever. During this time I am cold, distant, depressed, disinterested in sex, overly-critical of my spouse, exhausted, anxious, and feeling downright unlovable and undeserving of love. I over-analyze and find fault with all of my choices and perceptions, and I am filled with self-loathing for feeling this way -and for not being able to manage my PMS better. Then poof, I start my period and everything is great, I am lovable and loving and I can handle anything...until a few days after I ovulate. Does anyone else go through this? I feel like I can't trust my assessment of my own life situation when I have PMS or I don't, because many things in my life are worthy of despair (and also joy), and yet I am not historically one to give in to despair or ignore what is joyful. This only affects my immediate self and family, but it is driving me a little bit nuts (ok and them, too). I am sick of pathologizing myself, but I don't know what to do, and the worst part is I think I am the only one who goes through this. Am I? And of course, what do people do about it?

What can I do next?

This really stinks, but thanks for posting this question. I tell my husband that what he is seeing in me on the outside is just a VERY mere glance at the craziness that is going on inside my head. It is incredibly difficult to manage. He has been very understanding, but it is still really hard. I will be trying the dandelion root!

You are not alone, I totally know what your talking about, but I have found something that worked wonders for me.
DANDELION ROOT!!!
it can be found at fred myer in the natural section.
I used to have more PMS symptoms, then anyone should.
When I met my husband (who had been studying natural medicine for 9 years)
He put my on dandelion root. Now there are times when my time actually sneaks up on me( no cramping, moodiness, nothing)

i just figured this out myself. my body's really doing weird things now that i breastfeeding and hit the big 30. i never used to feel rage but i definitely do when i'm PMS'ing and ovulating too. i also get really hot at night and can't sleep with pants. and i've gotten back acne like never before.

so no, it's not in your head altho you've definitely got it worse than me. i'm going to talk about this with my doctor next week during my annual. i am hoping birth control of some sort will help. i have heard from a few women that an IUD can do wonders for lessening your period but have to find out if it works for the crazies. i'm hoping that the copper IUD works because it doesn't have hormones in it but mirena has very low doses so i may end up with that. i'll let you know what my doc says..

Hi J.! You're not alone by any means! I thought I was going to lose my mind when I went through what you describe. There is something called "Luminex" that you can try..it's all natural, and it pulled me right out of that funk. I
stopped crying and felt my energy come back and I started to
feel like my old self again. I had four kids in five years, and my husband was not very sympathetic to what I was going through, which made it even worse. Then, I heard about
Luminex and got determined to DO something about the way I was
feeling. I think you have to get real selfish, because if you
don't, your whole family suffers because you are the best you!
Well...ask about it at ____@____.com
Good luck...DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!

I would talk to your doctor. I experienced what is called PMDD (its severe pms in a nut shell). My doctor put me on meds and I felt much better. Also there are birthcontrol pills that help with theses symptoms also.

Hi J.-
Its funny, I am a 30 year old mommy of a 22 month old daughter and I felt like the words you wrote in your request were coming out of my own mouth! I have been dealing with very similar "emotional ups and downs" since the birth of my daughter. I do think it is linked to my monthly period, but have no idea why it is happening. I feel like a different person all together when going through this time each month. We have recently moved to a new state and I am having a really hard time finding work. My partner's job can't support us all so we are major stressed, so I am pretty sure that has something to do with it. Any new insight you find, post it here so I can keep in touch! Best Regards.

Hey J. please dont feel crazy. Like I suggested to someone else, take B vitamins. B complex is the best but make sure it has B6 and B12 they are the best, you need to take them all month long for it to work the best. If it stays so severe you may want to talk to you doctor and there are very mild antidepressants that work great. Since I have been on mine,7 years, I have not had any PMS and my symptoms were at least as bad as yours.

Have you considered getting and IUD? I am 36 and have two chidren. My doctor recommended an IUD as a long-term birth control solution that could minimize the effects of my period without the side effects of hormones. It has - in a very big way! I stopped having periods entirely. The device is very small, the procedure quick and painless, and many insurance companies will cover the entire cost. Plus, if you choose to have more children, it is easily reversible. After years of misery, I have been relieved of heavy burden! I am very happy I chose an IUD. Perhaps it could help you, too.

From another momma who is constantly dealing with hormone swings and years of avoiding the traditional remedy for pms, anti-depressants, I have researched a gazillion things.
What you are feeling is REAL and VALID. The solution will be up to your own knowledge of your body. For those of us in our thirties there is alot of research coming forward about deficiences in our supplies of progesterone and estrogren(predominantly estradiol). In the last three months I started taking bio-identical progesterone($21 a month and prescribed by a doctor) on the 14th day of my cycle at night. It is helping alot with my pms symptoms that happen from day 14-28(day 1 is your first day of your period). I sleep alot better and don't wake up with a dent in my forehead and have stopped being cranky.
There is some research that I am working on myself for those of us who have had our tubes tied or clamped, tubal ligation, in the depletion of estradiol, which is one of the three types of estrogen that is made in our ovaries(with our tubes clamped it sends weird messages to our ovaries, or that is at least the theory). Alot of folks link this to post-tubal ligation syndrome. I am currently taking a supplement, modestly, that is helping me raise my estrogen but I am watching it ubber closely as I don't want to swing too far. So far, I am feeling a noticeable difference.
This has surely been one of my biggest challenges as an adult woman- hormones. And I struggle with the lack of interest or education with our medical and naturopathic doctors. I found a lot of help reading Ageless by, believe it or not, Suzanne Somers and her barage of medical advisors. Also another book that really helped me understand my hormones, it has a really odd name, but it was really helpful to me, It's My Ovaries, Stupid! by Elizabeth Lee Vliet, especially in understanding my cycle.
I hope this helps and sorry for the distracted flow in writing, lots of interuptions. good luck!

Ah, hormones, don't you love them? In my thirties, I had it worse than ever. My gyno had given me a pamphlet on a natural vitamin type, that at the time was only available in California. I sent away for those pills and though I thought I felt ok, it wasn't until I forgot to take them that I realized how much they worked. You start taking them a week before you period. They have a lot of natural minerals in them that counter the imbalance of your hormones. One, I remember, was magnesium. You know how you may crave chocolate during? It's the magnesium that you need. Anyway, I was so down one day, I just wanted to do nothing but sit and cry. I didn't know why, I just did. My husband called and I was telling him of my rediculous day and I happened to think; is it time to take my pills? I looked at the calendar and sure enough, it was a day or two late. I took them right away and in 1/2 hour, I was a TOTALLY different person. I couldn't believe it. Frisky and happy. From then on I told everyone about this and stuck with them. I was, however, really sad about the way I always had treated my boys. I would yell at them for no reason and think, why did I do that? and thought, BECAUSE I JUST FELT LIKE IT! I bet if you get some natural therapy, you will feel much better.

I absolutely suggest you journal your body symptoms (all physical feelings) for a few months to chronicle your patterns. Share your written record with your doctor. Extreme PMS is also a symptom of other conditions. You are not crazy! And if nothing else, it will give you an understanding of how your body/mind/spirit works. From this basis you can better meet your own needs too! Blessings~
