My daughter, almost 3, had an ear tube surgery on friday. friday, she was a bit grumpy but as the medication wore off her mood got great. but on sunday and today one of her ears has been bleeding. not a lot i don't think all i can see is crusty old blood, more so today then yesterday. she says her ears don't hurt but i am wondering if anyone knows if this is common occurence. i looked online and couldn't find anything about this and being memorial day i can't get a hold of the doctor. any ideas on this?
thank you moms

So What Happened?

thank you so much moms. i was unable to get a hold of him because i didn't know the number i had was a pager. so i kept calling from my cell and didn't hear form him. hours later my husband made the call, put in our number and he called back. he said she should be fine unless, like you all said, there's constant bleeding. she has some, dried out and in one ear but so far she's acting fine.
thank you so much. i am hoping so much this will put a stop to constant ear infections and maybe help improve her pronouncination a bit

Hi L.,

Two of my three kids had ear tubes and if I remember correctly, I was told that a little bit of bleeding afterwards is normal. It's probably drainage now that the ear has the tube in it.

I would still check with the doctor to be sure, if you haven't already. Good luck!

Hi! I just wanted to tell you that the bleeding is normal. My 4 year old daughter and my 17 month old son both had tubes put in. The blood is from the incision and you will notice it for a few days as the cut heals around the tube and probably dried blood in the ear canal until it comes close enough that you can wash it out. My son's ear tube is actually blood stained (so the ped. says) from all of the drainage he has had. Don't be suprised if you see yellow drainage coming out of the ears. My son's tubes were put in, in Sept. and my daughters in November and my son's ears still drain when he get congested. It's kinda gross, but at least it's coming out. Hope this helps! - J.

L., you should call the doctor to make sure that her one tube is not coming out. My son 9, had it done about a month ago, and he is doing fine. He had an infection in his left ear when they performed the surgery, and his ear drained for a couple of days. Not blood, but drainage from the infection. I would call the doctor just to be on the safe side.

It's is normal to see some blood after sugery coming from the now open eustation tube. Did they remove her adenoids as well? Sometimes the removal of the adenoids and the PE tube surgery can be frightening. As you will see some blood coming from the tube, and a bit from the nose. One thing to remember a little blood or some crusted blood is normal a heavy active bleed is not. If your daughter is bleeding enough to soak throgh a 4X4 gauze in 20 minutes that is something to be concerned about and should be evaluated by a physician immediately.

I wish you luck!! The increase in quality of life for these kids after the surgery is well worth the surgery! Have a great day!

L.,
Both my boys have had 2 sets of tubes. A little bit of bleeding is ok, especially if it's crusty and dry. Don't worry- I'm sure she is fine. I'm wondering why your doctor doesn't have someone on call, though. At our ped office, you can call any time or day and the answering service will take a message and forward it to the doctor. The doctor will call me within a half hour or so.
Good luck!

My 3 year old son had this same surgery 2 months ago. He also had some bleeding, but not a lot. They said as long as you are not seeing much wet blood it is okay. So, as long as it is just some dried blood it is natural. They will bleed during the healing process, but not a lot. Hope that helps. Let me tell you the tubes have done wonders for us! He used to be sick all the time with everything and now I think he has only been sick once since the surgery.

It is normal for there to be some bleeding when tubes are put in, also if they need to be removed there can be some bleeding. If it gets excessive don't hesitate to call the dr. we had this happen with our son and everything was okay, and I also reserched on line to make sure the dr was right, and he was.

I had a son who had this surgery twice and he did not bleed either time... if you can't get a hold of the dr he should have someone on call you can talk to or take her to the emergency room. You don't want to take a chance on this....

good luck and let me know how she is ...

HI L.,
my oldest had 3 sets of tubes and a little bleeding is normal. If you are using the ear drops its actually that causing you to see blood. The drops open the tube and clear out any blood left over from the surgery. As long as she isnt in pain I wouldnt be too concerned but to put your mind at ease get a hold of her doc.
Good luck and wait til you see the difference after the tubes they were wonderful for my son!

My son had tube surgery twice and had the same thing happen. If you are very concerned call the ER, but unless you see fresh, red blood coming out of her ear continuously, it's normal. The crusty blood is just the blood following surgery coming out. Some kids don't release any, some kids more than others. Good luck and hope this helps.
