I have a 25 month old and would love to start potty training him. He is getting a lot of rashes on his bottem area and I have tried creams, antibiotics and changing his diaper constantly but it keeps showing up. His doc recommended to start potty training due to those rashes. My son know what pipi n poo-poo is and hates having diapers on him. He will pull them off and everything. This is my first child and don't know where to start. How long? How can I start, etc. Please give me any advice. Thanks!!

well i am curently potty training my 3 and a half year old. i tried at 2. he also knew poo poo and pee but refused to train, i tried many different times and now he is finally getting it and doing well! i have 2 older children also so i have been through it before. how i have always started is with training underware. ya know the thick kind. and rubber pants over top. then they can feel when they have messed. pull-ups do not work as they are just like diapers and feel like diapers also. i put them on the potty every 15 mins to half hour depending on if they went the last time. if they go on the potty i give lots of praise. i know the doctor wants you to but if he is not ready he wont do it so try not to get to upset. good luck.
My son, who is now 2.5, just transitioned to underwear (except naps & nighttime), and we started potty training at about 25 mos. I went really slowly w/him...got a potty & would sit him on it every day after bath, and he would usually pee. One time he pooped, and he was so afraid I would be mad he wouldn't get up...once he saw how excited I was, though, he would poop in the potty every once in awhile. After a few weeks, I started putting him on the potty first thing in the morning & after bath in the evening. Then daycare started putting him on the potty at every diaper change...Finally, in July we decided to try underwear & he did awesome! A few accidents the first couple days, but he's been dry ever since. He still wears diapers at nap & bedtime, and will for several months, I think. At least until his diapers are dry when he wakes up. Also, switch diapers to a chlorine free brand, like 7th Generation or Earth's Best. My son breaks out in horrible diaper rash with any other brand, so I feel your pain. Also, Burt's Bees diaper cream worked wonders for us. GL!!
My son was trained by that age (but they say boys are slower) so just try it & see if he is ready! I recommend getting a little potty & then transitioning to the big seat. We got a sticker chart & hung it behind the bathroom door.
You can also let him walk around your house in underwear & ask him evry 20-30 mins if he needs to go. I feel that more verbal children tend to potty train faster (maybe they grasp it better or maybe because they can ask questions & understand what is being asked of them.
Poop took about 4 weeks after pee. I was Very lucky that he went to underwear easily & has only had about 6 pee accidents this year. Every child is different. If yours is not ready, I'd change diapers or even try cloth!
Also Budreau's butt paste worked like magic for us!
I potty trained mine before two years of age. Start now. Buy a potty chair and put it by the big toilet. Get some pull ups, some training pants and your on your way. Put the training pants on him while at home during the day. At bed time and when you go out use the pull ups. He won't know at first when he has to go so it will be up to you to take him. Some people say take him every 30 minutes. My advice is that when you or his Daddy (if his Daddy is in the picture) take him to the potty when you go. Also, buy him some special underwear to wear after he learns to go in the potty. It's best if you take him to the store and let him pick them out. That will encourage him to learn quicker. I have always been told that boys train easier than girls. I had no problems with my girls. Didn't even have to train the first one. She just went when I did.
