Our almost 3 yr old girl is protesting going number 2 in the potty. She succeeded once but was quite terrified while it happened . Afterwards she was happy and we celebrated. Since then she had gone in her panties twice . We still put pull ups on her durring the night and at nap time. Once she woke up from her nap poopy. Another time she ran to her room and hid and pooped her pants. How can we help her? She sometimes will protest number one but eventually she will go pee pee in the potty . Sometimes shell tell us. Once she went all on her own. So how do we help our daughter with resistance and almost fear of pooping in the potty?

Keep her stools very soft (drink lots of fluids, fruits, maybe even a little Miralax) and have her sit on the toilet after whatever meals you're at home for a few minutes. There's a natural let down after meals that encourages pooping, so maybe she'll give in if she's already there. Try to do the same meals every day so her bowel will start to get used to that. Don't force it! There are other problems that can happen if a child is scared and forced to go. Keep it all positive (I know it's hard) and stools soft (one difficult poop can bring on a lot of fear) and let her do it in her time. Good luck! Potty training is not for the faint of heart!

Jessica K's advice is everything I would have said. I too have a 3 yo who hates to poop. She'll hold it for days. I give her lots of prunes (she loves them- we call them big raisins) and prune juice and she eats Raisin Bran for breakfast every morning. But if it isn't that she hates to poop, just to poop in the toilet, you could try letting her sit on a potty (more comfy) or put a stool at her feet to help push. We have even gone so far as to look at the poop afterwards to see what it "looks like" ie an alligator! She likes this game so much she will run into the bathroom and tell me she is going to make a dinosaur poop etc. Also, she gets a bit of chocolate for pooping- you know, because it looks like poop...
GOOD LUCK!

My youngest daughter is just 3 and we have been having "pooping resistance" off and on for a little while now. What IS working for me: she gets candy when she does go poop in the potty (her favorite treat), I make sure she has things that keep her stool soft (one hard one and she doesnt like it again), sometimes if she is unhappy or it is "owie" she wants me to hug her or hold her hand (dont inhale through nose lol), and I explained to her (and she grasped) that if she goes poo everyday it doesnt hurt but when she wont poo for a few days her next poo might hurt. I also discovered one problem my daughter was having was she cannot stand the feel of the toilet paper. Once I started letting her use wipes she resisted less. Just some things that usually help here. oh and DO NOT MAKE IT A POWER STRUGGLE!!!!

Hi C.. I have to children ages 6 and 3. WHen my 6 yr old girl was a potty training she had trouble at first but what helped was that everytime I needed to go I would take her. So she would sit in her potty bowl too. I did this constantly, conditioning her. Eventually she moved from diapers, to training pull ups, to her panties. NOW the problem is my 3yr old son. I have tried the same thing but no luck!!! I really can't figure that one out!

Here's some good info from a child/family therapist on this topic. Another tip: have her sit backwards on adult toilet (if that's what she's using) so she can "hug" the tank for more stability.
