Potty Training - Irving,TX

My son is about to turn 3 years old. I have been trying to potty train him. He will go on the potty when I take him, but I can't get him to tell me when he has to go. I have a newborn as well, so it's been hard for me to take my oldest son to the bathroom on a regular schedule. Needless to say, he ends up going in his pull-up often. I thought about just putting him in underwear, but I can't imagine dealing with the mess while also caring for a newborn. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Don't feel bad. My son turned 3 in December and is at the exact same place as yours potty-wise. He is really interested in learning things and doing things that he just couldn't care less about potty training. I swear the kid will be reading before he poops in the potty! I have a 12 month old daughter too, so I understand your difficulty in dealing with two. I think we both just have to have faith and trust that one day they'll show a stronger interest. I am not pushing my son until mid-late summer. It'll happen. Good luck.

In your position I would wait until the baby is at least 3-6 months old to begin training the older child. You need to be able to really support him since it is such a big change, and you have enough on your plate right now. He is probably a little stressed with so many changes now too. When he is ready you should be able to put underwear on him and just go for it. My daughter currently runs around without pants so she can go potty by herself when we are home- I just have to wipe her. When we go out though I put a diaper on her (would use pull ups but the side velcro stuff gives her a rash) and reward her for using potty and keeping diaper dry- but don't punish for wet diaper.

S.,
My daughter will turn 3 in less than a month and I didn't think she was ever going to take an interest in potty training. All of a sudden 2 weeks ago she wanted to wear panties and potty in the toilet...not the potty chair. We made a big deal about it and went to the store and let her pick out her own panties. Like your son, before 2 weeks ago she would potty in her pull up or her panties. I had always heard girls were easier than boys to potty train, not her! My son was potty trained at 2! When your son is ready he'll start using the potty. I know, believe me, I know that's not what you want to hear! Just keep talking to him about being a big boy and wearing big boy underwear...it'll sink in soon. Also, with summer coming up, I remember with our son...we would let him potty off the back porch. He thought that was lots of fun!
Good luck...and it will happen!

Use cloth training pants and sweat pants. These together absorb a lot of urine.
