I would love some tips on potty training my 24 month old girl. We have been trying for a couple of months and have not quite made it yet. She tells me when she is peeing or pooing, but not with enough time to get her to the potty. We also put her on the potty periodically, but she has only peed on the potty one time. We make a big deal about being on the potty and she likes that but how do we get further? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

D.: After raising 3 boys, it has been my experience that they are unable to be completely potty trained until age 3.

It may be a little early for her but keep up the postive reactions she will get there before long. For my daughter stickers seemed to work well as a reward.

Sounds like she just needs time...each kid goes at their own pace. Don't push too hard or it could backfire.

It sounds like the steps you have taken so far are for potty readiness, getting your child ready to use the potty and to be able to sit on the toilet for at least 2-3 minutes. That is the first step. I have toilet trained children that I work work with as an early intervention therapist for children with delays and autism. We use a toileting schedule. Set a timer, a digital egg timer works best and make sure your child is put on the potty each time the timer goes off. If she sits on the toilet and uses the potty give her a small treat or toy that she only gets for using the potty and let her flush the toliet and wash her hands, this is really reinforcing for children her age. If she sits and doesn't use the potty treat it nuetrally, no special treat, no flushing. If she has an accident, then tell her that she needs to use the potty instead, again no reinforcement. Also you want to start training for pee-pee before poo-poo, she will be able to controll this better at first. We use 10-15 minute time intervals and increase them by 5 minutes after 3 days of no accidents. Again these children are delayed and/or autistic so if you decided this you may want to try a 20-30 minute interval at first, if you are experiencing a lot of accidents then lower your interval. It works, but it is a lot of work for you. I have used training pants when training children, not diapers, but do what is convient for you though if you do stick with a diaper use a pull-up it will be more like pants and she can learn to pull them up and down. Hope this helps

Just keep at it, and be all positive. She may not have the control yet, just the "awareness" that something is happening when she pees or poops, and feels the changes. She'll eventually get the hang of it. My son was potty trained for about 10 months (from about 15 months until the age of 2)...Once he turned 2, it was like a magic button went off and he started going to the potty with no accidents.

A special trip for big girl underwear should be like a big celebration...

Your daughter will get there when she is ready...but helpful encouragement never hurts when done in a loving way. I also kept potty chairs during potty training on every level of the house (although unsightly) I kept one in the rooms we most used. That way, it was a visual reminder, it helped express curiousity about the potty, and he could sit on it whenever he wanted. It really did seem to help.

Best of luck.

Its a bit early at this point to expect too much, but my kids were really successful with having a potty schedule. They would sit on the potty when they woke up, midmorning, after lunch, after nap, before dinner, before bed. I made a chart and they'd get a stamp for trying, a sticker for going pee, and two for pooping. You may even just choose a couple of times a day at first. If that doesn't work for you, I had a girlfriend that basically sat her kids on the potty chair most of the day until they got it.

We are potty training my son (3 yo) right now. We have him in pull ups but call them big boy underwear. We tried underwear but even after several accidents he wasn't getting the hang of it and I was getting exasperated with the mess and laundry. Anyway, we use rewards and praise even if he tries but doesn't do anything. I try to look for clues that he is wetting or soiling his "underwear" and try to get him to the potty in time. If we are successful I make a big fuss. I also appeal to him wanting to be a big boy. He likes to operate the DVD player, play computer games, etc. I tell him if he wants to learn to do those things he also has to learn to use the potty. It was recommended to us that we have a potty schedule so that he can come to expect that he will be on the potty at certain times such as first thing in the morning, right after breakfast, before nap time time, etc.

Here is a quick funny story about potty training my 2 year old. We had also started potty training her. For the first 3 days every time we put her on the potty she peed. We fussed, she was excited, we thought "this will be easy". On the 4th day she pooed on the potty. As my son and I were clapping for her, she spread her legs, looked in the basin then looked up at me. With a frown on her face and tears welling up in her eyes, she said, "I dropped it," and began to cry. From that point on she would not do anything in the potty. Ugh!! We are going to start training again after the holidays. Good luck!

Our daughter just turned two yesterday. She will not go near the potty. If we ask her...she says "no way" so we decided not to push. What is funny is if her diaper is wet, she will not sit down. She yells "wet" and we went through a phase where she would take the diaper off if there were poop in it. So, should you come up with some good ideas, please pass them along. www.livegreeneasy.com

24 months can be early - some kids are ready, some aren't. If you relax and follow her lead, she'll get there, and it'll be less stressful for everyone.
