My daughter who is 2.5 years old is potty training and is doing very well keeping herself dry. We just started and she just picked right up on it. She has an occasional accident, which is understandable. But my question is, how do you potty train in public? She won't sit on a big potty. When we go to Grandma's we bring the potty with us, no problem. But when we are out shopping or eating out, she refuses to sit on the big potty and just goes in her pants. She tells me she has to go but then says that she is going to go in her pants (she still wears pull-ups). If I try to set her on the potty she screams and cries. I think that she feels she might fall in. Is there something that is portable i can take? or some tips that would help her? Or how you got your child to potty on a big toilet?
You can buy a fold-up portable potty seat that you can carry in your purse or a diaper bag. I think a lot of kids feel like they are going to fall in and it's can be a scary environment with others flushing toilets (or the kind with the automatic flushers) and just "new" in general. Always keep her in a pull-up when you go out of the house just in case and just keep trying. She'll be okay eventually.

I bought this really wonderful potty seat that folds up to bring with me when we go in public. Its a fun potty seat that has spongebob and folds up into a small "square" and fits easily in my purse or small bag. My daughter is 2 and fully potty trained as well. Here is what we bought her --I could only find it online, but I have heard from friends similar items are at walmart and toysRus? Its essentially a folding potty. Check out target website. :)

The other suggestion I have is to take her out of pull-ups. They are so similar to diapers that kids sometimes need to feel the "yucky" wetness to know that is NOT how it is supposed to be.

Mine were the exact same way, I carry a potty chair everywhere with me when we are training, we live in the country so trips to town could take a while, I will place a plastic bag inside and then some paper towels to absorb the urine, and at the nearest trash throw it away, they have those rings that can be plaqed on the big potty but none of mine liked it, so I wasn't above bringing in the little potty when it was needed. I also tried to not do a whole lot when they were training, so I could avoid some of the hassel and make sure they really had it down. Also get rid of the pull-ups, they are just a big diaper, allow her to have her accidents and then have her help clean it up, it can be a pain when you are out but it also makes a big difference, #5 for me peed all over our optomologist office, they were fine with it and even understood, I felt so bad but it is easier when they actually get to feel what is happening to them, and most kids don't like to fell wet. Babies'R Us has a nice selection of the portable potty seats. I think ours was $7. Worked very well. GL
You can buy portable seat covers that fit into your purse (if you have a fairly big one) they fold up and you can get portable clorox wipes to clean it off. It makes public toilets the same size as her potty seat. I got mine from One Step Ahead or try Leaps and Bounds over the internet on both or from their catalog. I think it was like $10! Also they have blow up pottys that we keep in the car with bags that you just put in the hole part. Just continue to reassure her that big pottys are fine and even wipe it down for her, hold her on it with one arm (I have to do with my son if he has to poopy while in public). Be careful if she overhears you say anything about cleanliness of public restrooms as that breeds the fear factor. I always just have my son sit on it, holding tightly to one of my arms and he knwos I will not let him go. Hang in there and just keep being consistent.
