My daughter just turned 2 Feb 28..was open to potty training.. we went to the store and she picked out her potty and panties! I was told that when she goes potty to make a BIG deal so after a couple wet panties she did it!! She went potty on her toilet so me and my 2 nieces cheer'd for her....well between the 3 of us we scared her!!!!!!! Now she doesnt want anything to do with the potty!! HELP!

I left out the fact that she does NOT like it once she pee's in her diaper she tells me immediately! PEE'D she says and if I dont change her she takes her diaper off herself. It is getting not only frustrating but expensive!

What can I do next?

Yes, that's the thing, each child is different. She sounds somewhat like my guy, he didn't like the fuss, a high-five and a "good job" was his limit. Came to find out, he's private and didn't want attention. Rewards didn't work, for him the reward was being trained.
Just keep the potty out for her, take her with you when you go to the bathroom and keep it low-key. When you see her going for it quietly praise her.

Now you know to keep it more quiet next time she tries. I'll bet that she would react this way to other things too. My older son couldn't stand being the "birthday boy" at his own birthday parties. He wouldn't even sit in the birthday boy chair. The limelight scares some children.

Anyway, you just need to back off and wait a while and THEN try again, without the nieces in the picture. She's 2 - young still, and it will only make things worse if you push her.

Sorry, but that's hilarious!! That's totally something that would happen in my house :-)

First off all, congrats on a successful pee pee! I would leave the potty chair somewhere accessible and let her approach it when she's ready again. Next time she's ready to try, limit the audience and celebration to just you and her. Make it more of a quiet time thing...maybe leave a couple favorite books by the potty and let her read while she sits on It. I'm sure you didn't scare her off it forever :-).

I did the 'reward the pee pee' method when my daughter potty trained. Most people say give an M&M or small candy, but my daughter doesn't really like candy or sweets. So I bought a bunch of little things from the dollar spot at Target and let her choose a surprise out of the bag every time she peed for the first week or so. It was a little pricey, but I figured it was cheaper than buying diapers. Once she got the hang out it, I would distract her after she peed so she wouldn't immediately start thinking of choosing a prize. She 'weaned' ' off the prizes pretty quickly.

Good luck!

It may take her a while to get over it. Keep encouraging her, but without an audience. Is she a young two or closer to 3? I'd say to stick with the panties or heavy duty cloth training pants, so she knows that she's wet if she goes, and let her know (if she's an old enough 2 to understand) that if she uses the potty, you'll give her a sticker instead of making noise.

2 is early for most kids. She liked the novelty of it but probably just isn't ready (as much as you probably are!!!) Put it aside for now and bring it out in another 6 months. Ahh - she got your hopes up...!

LOL??? Sorry, it's a funny visual.

Give it a break, and give it another try in a month or two. But 2 is young. Girls usually train earlier than boys, though.

R.,

Did you speak with your pediatrician? It is normal for children to get scared and not want to use the potty. She is obviously ready to use the potty but do not push or bribe her. She will go back to it when she is ready. My daughter did the same thing.. have you tried reading a princess potty book at night? I took pictures of my daughter and we made a book together about the potty and read it every night before bed....she loved seeing herself has a princess and reading about the princess using the potty just to get positive feelings around it. Then one day she woke up and wanted to do it again!

Good luck two years is very young.. for potty so it may take an entire year and that's okay. My daughter is very advanced so she would not use the potty only diapers until one month before her fourth birthday! The dr said perfectly normal.. when I used to put panties on her she would hold it all day and ask for a diaper when she had to go.

Everyone has their own way.. I am a dr sears advocate you can see if any of that works for you.

Are your nieces in the room when she's going potty? Maybe she wants some privacy. I think potty training needs to be a calm, quiet thing. Wait a couple months and try again, with no distractions - aka screaming nieces ;-p.

It's her pee's! Let her decide what she wants to do with them! - at least that is what my parent ed class teacher says. When she is ready it will happen. I'd just step back and not even mention it at all. Or you can do the naked route. Let her run naked for a few days at home and have a potty where ever she is playing. Much easier technique for the summer time!
