Hi P.,
I have boy/girl twins who are 6 1/2 . First, let me tell you that it is not as scary as you might think. The first thing I did was completely take care of myself during pregnancy. Many people will tell you that lots of twins are born premature, but that doesn't have to be the case. My twins were born full term at 6 lbs 6 oz. and 6 lbs. I drank a galloon of water or more a day, ate every 2 hours whether hungry or not, and ate like a health nut :).
Another piece of advice is get organized and prepared. I had everything labeled, put together and set up at 30 weeks...just in case. With twins, you don't want anymore surprises. I always overplanned, left the house 15 minutes earlier than necessary, etc. It was worth it to keep me calm and focused when they both blew up their diapers and outfits at the same time on an outing :). Also, ACCEPT HELP! This was hard for me because I am a type A personality....always in charge and control. NOT!! With twins, I galdly accepted the neighbors help when she took over for 2 hours so I could sleep. I learned real fast to turn those babies over and rest :) I also learned early to nurse them TOGETHER rather than seperately. It made life much easier for me.
The "What to Expect When Expecting" book has a section on multiples. Also, subscribe to TWINS magazine. It was an awesome resource for me. Read as much as you can but remember that just like your first child...MOM knows best. I had tons of moms of twins giving me advice as well and some of it worked well and lots of it wasn't for us. GOOD LUCK!!
