I am looking to put my son into a preschool program next year...I am very picky about what I choose for my children and this has turned out to be harder than I thought. He will be 4 this next school year. I am looking for something that has an academic focus, but also has some time spent on the arts. I am willing to drive for quality. I want structure, but also allows for some choice. I don't even know where to start. I was looking at Montessori schools, but they all seem to be so different and not all have the TRUE Montessori vision eventhough they claim that they do. Please help! A child's first experience in school is so important and lays the groundwork for the rest of their educational career. I want this to be a positive experience.

What can I do next?

We love Primrose at Parkwood Hill. You can have them go all day, five days a week, or just half days. They can also just go a couple of days a week to start off with. My son went there when he was little and we have known most of the staff for a long time. They are so wonderful and they learn so much. I am amazed at what my five year old daughter comes home telling me. She was adding by hundreds and knows how to recite the Pledge of Allegiance exactly. She went to a Mom's Day Out program before this and basically knew her alphabet and numbers and did lots of crafts. She has come so far in just a few short months.

Hi J.,

I am not sure where you live. The Dallas Cooperative Preschool is located at Midway and Royal in Dallas. Our school is located inside teh John Calvin Prebyterian church. We are a cooperative which means the parents are heavily involved in helping to run the school and be at the school at least once a month with their children for their serving day. We have a multi-age grouping (3-5 year olds)in the morning with free play. We break out into younger and older groups next, reading time, songs, snack then they chose what area they want to go to art, dramatic play or just free play. A little outside time and it is time for pick-up. Our days are M-F 9-12 with extended days on T/W/Fri. until 2pm. Our website is currently down, but if you need more specifics, email me directily at ____@____.com have been there 4 years and have enjoyed our time and highly recommend it!

Hi J.,

My friend's daughter is in a wonderful Pre-K program at Kids R Kids. It is in Mansfield or Arlington. I can't remember. They have a structured and educational program plus music classes and things. They also have a cute little cafe where they eat. Her daughter is almost 5 and Loves it. I have also heard that the Pantego Christian academy in Mansfield has a great program too. Hope this helps!

I highly recommend Discovery School at Smithfield UMC in North Richland Hills. They have a completely hands-on curriculum. They work hard using the state Pre-K TEKS to prepare the kids for Kindergarten. Their teachers are loving and caring. We have ABSOLUTELY loved it! They have 2 day and 3 day programs. They have registration coming up for next year at the end of January (they can fillup fast.)
You can make an appointment on Thursdays to tour the school and watch the kids in action.
Here is their website with more details.

Hi! We put our younger daughter through the Pre-K program offered through the HEBISD and LOVED IT! (It's a tuition-based program, so I don't think you location matters, though we do live within the district, so I'm not positive about that.) Please follow this link for more information: http://www.hebisd.edu/edge/ck-prek.htm. Also, please don't hesitate to let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

Best of luck!

At 4 years old, you might want to consider Pre-K rather than a Preschool. My 3 year old is currently in preschool and my 5 (missed the August Kindergarten cut off) in is private Kindergarten at Primrose of Parkwood Hill. He attended the Pre-K last year and it was a great jumpstart.

I looked into the Montessori downtown FW and was not impressed with their “TRUE Montessori vision”. I was also looking for structure and academics; they explained to me that they don’t operate that way. They let the children learn at their own pace and don’t really push or challenge them. They want children to “enjoy” what they are doing and encourage themselves… please, my kids would have played Candy Land all day :-) I was also confused with the age span, my 4 year old would have been in a class that ranged from 3-6 year olds.

The Primrose that we attend is challenging for the kids. My older son who just turned 5 is spelling 6 letter words, counts by 5s and 10s along with simple addition and subtraction and understands clocks and can draw the O’clock and half hours. He also just started writing 3 word sentences! They spend the afternoons on art and science projects and also encourage group play. Please let me know if you would like additional information, the Pre-K teacher there has a Bachelors in Education and is great with the kiddos.

Good Luck!
E.
