Dear Mamas,

Its V. from UK again. My preschooler is sick again. This has happened exactly after a month since he had his last episode. Last month (17th October) he had fever, cold, inflammed tonsills. The doctor gave him antibiotics ( penicillin). He was fine for a month. Now all of a sudden since yesterday ( 19th November), he is having fever ( 102 degrees Farentheit), cold ,swollen tonsils, snoring. I called up the medical services and had him examined by a nurse first, who thought antibiotics are not necessary. And since the fever returned back later today, had him examined by a doctor. The doctor said, the tonsils are definitely bigger, but not big enough to be worried and does not consider antibiotics necessary. He examined the tummy, nose, ear, breathing etc, and said all looks fine, and the tonsils should sort out itself. For the fever, he asked us to stick with calpol (paracetemol) and nurofen ( ibuprofen). My concern is- are the medics missing something? Please note, since its the NHS, different doctors look at him, and I think atleast one of them would have spotted something obvious. We specifically asked for an ENT appointment, which again the doctor thought was not necessary.
His breathing is OK, nothing comes out of the nose, but his voice is nasal. He does not even have runny noses. He does snore loudly when he gets cold.
I would like to add that, he has been going to playgroups for more than an year(october 2009 to august 2010). Its just that he started going to nursery from august 2010(I just added this information so that mamas can know he is not new to being with other kids).
I will be glad if some mamas can advice me, or share their experiences.
Thanks and regards,
V.

Hi Nicole,
My son is 3 years and nine months old. The doctor earlier (ie during the episode last monthe) did not suspect strep.
Just hearing about PANDA from you. Did a bit of googling. Will ask the doctor about it.
Thanks and regards,
V.

So What Happened?

Thanks mamas for all your inputs.
My son was put on a course of penicillin again since monday ( 22nd Nov) as the doctor who saw him that day felt he needs antibiotics. Too surpriced that the doctor who saw him on saturday ( 20th Nov)felt there was no need for antibiotics.
He is back to his normal self, but the snoring continues.
I have also started giving him sambucol for children and pulled him off nursery and swimming for a few weeks.
He is already on Haliborange vitamin supplements. Previously he was on abidec as this was recommened by our health visitor as kids in the part of the country where we live dont get sufficient vitamin A&D. I also need to look into the special vitamins they have "during and after" illness.

I would stay away from the antibiotics a bit just because you don't want your son getting immuned to them. Have you tried Sambucol/Elderberry - the natural anti-viral stuff? It sounds to me like his immune response is weak and it needs building up. If you do decide to give him antibiotics you can still give him elderberry. I would also give him vitamins C and D3 (or a good multi-vitamin that has them in it). I just read a report out of Japan where scientists studied school age children and the flu. It seems that those children with higher levels of D3 were less likely to get sick than those that had lower levels. Of those with the higher levels who got sick, they were able to "throw off" the cold or flu days earlier. It is just an idea. I would keep pushing the doctors, too, though. There is nothing like a mother's instinct.

Good luck and God bless,
Z.

I would have a strep test-one for you, too-and everyone else at home. Do you keep changing his toothbrush? Get him out of the play group.

Zina gives great advice. In addtion, stay away from dairy and sugar for a while until symptoms are gone and a week after. Miso soup helps as well.
Probiotics are most helpful through the winter.

From your description I think this is normal when your child starts going to school for the first time. They are exposed to more viruses and other germs. It takes awhile until the immune system gets used to this. Doesn't matter if the child start school as a preschooler or kindergartener or started in daycare earlier than preschool. Same process is happening. Hope your little one gets well soon!

Since he goes to Preschool.... initially, kids tend to get sick more often
How long has he been going to preschool?
I have a friend, that worked at a Preschool. In the beginning, she was getting sick EVERY month... for about the first 6 months to 1 year (and she is typically healthy and does not get sick). Then, she did not get sick... she had gotten pretty immune to all the germs at the school etc.

ALSO... you can tell if it is just your son or not... meaning... are there OTHER kids at his Preschool or even the Teacher(s) that are sick or with colds??? If so then, it is not only your son. And so there are cold germs floating around at school and anyone can get sick. Kids... are notorious for not washing hands/putting things in their mouths/sneezing or coughing without covering their mouths and they touch anything and everything....

I don't know... but you have checked him out with various Doctors.
I think... it is due to being in Preschool....

all the best,
Susan

sounds like a virus and a 102 degree fever isn't too high for a preschooler. There are a lot of viruses going around that infect your throat. Your tonsils are a first line of defence, the fever is a 2nd line of defence. Bring him back in if he becomes lathargic or has difficulting breathing. Keep him hydrated and a humidifier in his room.
