Preschools and Nap

Please help...my son is 3 1/2 and in full day preschool 3 days a week. He has recently given up his nap, and this is causing a lot of trouble at school. The school has a 2 hour rest period, and needless to say, it is hard for him to stay relatively still and quiet for 2 hours. They will allow him to have books, coloring books, etc., but even with that it's a challenge.

Do all full day preschools require this long nap period? Does anyone know of preschools in the Aurora/Naperville area that don't? I wish we could do mornings only, but it's not possible with our work schedules. We like the school, and hate to think about pulling him out, but this has become a major problem.

Thanks for your help!

Hi!
It is DCFS rule so I doubt you will find one that doesn't! I don't know what time you put him to bed and he gets up, but maybe a later bedtime will help him be tired at nap? It is going to be hard since he is only there 3 days/week. Do you have him practice quiet time at home too? It may be better to keep him in his school routine at home and have him be quiet on his bed for a while each day too. Just some suggestions? I do home daycare and we have the same 2 hour nap period until kindergarten, but everyone naps here and are in separate rooms! Maybe they could try separating him as much as possible in the room?

Good Luck!

My son is the same age with the same problem. Unfortunately, it is state law that they provide quite time for them. My son has to lay quietly on his cot , but after 45 minutes they give him a toy or puzzle to do on his cot. It's hard because he is they only one and he often gets in trouble at nap time. He naps maybe once every two weeks. I try to think positively that he is learning self-control.

Hello K. K.,

The state of Illinois (DCFS) requires that all children under 5 must rest for at least 2 hours. However I am a state licensed home daycare/preschool provider and I do offer a 1/2 day program. Please visit my website at: www.lilmiracleschildcare.com and if you're interested please give me a call.

Thanx

I would wake him up little earlier than his usual time, and would make night time little later than his usual time. Then he might sleep atleast for an hour.
