Prickly Heat Rash

I used Caldescene powder and it works great. One mom on the Babycenter website said it worked great for diaper rash too.

Are you sure it is heat rash and not baby acne?
4-6 weeks is when they most often get baby acne on the face and shoulders.
Prickly heat is usually found on places that are covered by clothing like chest and back, or in the folds of skin behind the knees or on the upper arms.
My doctor suggested just using corn starch baby powder on prickly heat, but we never had it on faces or shoulders.
We did have major baby acne on face, shoulders and upper torso, and the doctor said it would just go away on its own. I think it took a good 10 days to go away. (It got more red, and then kind of crusty looking, and then it went away.)

Sounds like infant acne. It will go away on its own.

Hi Misty, My now 20 month old son gets what I think is prickly heat almost any time we spend an extended amount of time in the heat. It looks horrible and for him, it usually starts on the legs and works it's way up the torso and arms, with it appearing lastly on his face. It usually lasts maybe 3 days and then it's gone. I've not found anything that keeps it from "spreading". Of course, in my son's case, it spreads in a matter of hours, not days.

Believe me, the first time it happened, I was panicking cause it looks so horrible. But the doctor just told me to put Eucerine or Aquaphor on it after bathing and up to 4 times a day until it goes away. He also recommended doing colloidal oatmeal baths as well. I think some kids are just more susceptible to it than others, as with anything.

I was at a family reunion in July and my son had an outbreak. Everyone there probably thought I was a horrible mother cause I just kept telling them "It's just prickly heat. There's nothing to worry about." The grandmothers were all flipping out and everyone was thinking I should rush him to the doctor. My son was never acting uncomfortable or itching wildly or anything like that, and 2 days later, it was all gone.

My doctor's nurses have always told me if it's purple or blood red, or if there is an accompanying fever or other symptoms (chills, vomiting, diarreah, respiratory distress, etc.) that's when I should worry about a rash. Otherwise, it's very hard to tell what caused it and it usually goes away on it's own. Of course, you can always call your pediatrician's office and describe the rash. The nurses will usually be able to tell you what to do and whether or not your child should be seen just by your description.

Aveeno baths usually work pretty well. Is she on any type of medication? My daughter was on amoxocillin recently and had a severe allergic reaction that started as a small rash and grew over two weeks. It turned into terrible hives and she ended up in the emergency room. If it seems to be getting worse I would take her to the DR.

Are you sure it is just a heat rash? If the rash is not going away then I would take her to the doctor and verify that it is just a heat rash.

My nine week old daughter developed baby acne on her face at approximately 4-5 weeks of age. Her little cheeks looked so sore. She had small red bumps and white pimples that covered her cheeks and chin; mostly places that touched my breasts during feedings. She has also developed small red bumps on her shoulders and neck. All of the info that I read stated that the only treatment necessary would be to wash once daily with a mild cleanser. I wanted it to disappear and called my pediatrician. She stated that baby acne will not go away until 3-4 months of age. Her recommendation was to wash once daily with a mild cleanser and use hydrocortisone cream sparingly. I chose to take the recommendation of cleansing; however, have been applying Arbon's diaper rash ointment sparingly as well. Ali is a day shy of nine weeks and the white pimples are gone and the red bumps have lessened; however, not vanished completely. If your baby has heat rash only, I would recommend corn starch applications to the area.

First of all, if it is spreading I would re-evaluate whether or not it really is a heat rash. It could be something else. I have used Aquafor healing ointment on diaper rash and my son's dry crusty nose when he was sick. It worked like a charm both times. Aquafor is not in the baby care section. It is over with the skin care creams and lotions in cosmetics. Also try not to touch your baby's face when dressing her. Clothes touching her face when placed over her head may be spreading it to her shoulders or you touching her face and then another part of her body may also spread it. Hope some of this helps.

Are you sure it is heat rash and not baby acne? If you do a Google search you can get a ton of info and even some good pictures, but basically baby acne starts around 4-6 weeks of age, is most predominate on the cheeks and face but can be on shoulders, trunk and even under arms and buttocks.
The acne is caused by the dip in maternal hormones at this age. There is no real treatment for it- just tincture of time. Keep the area clean w/ warm water- no lotions or soaps as they can be irritating. In SEVERE case your Pedi may recommend a mild steroid cream, but that is at his/her rec ONLY!
