Probiotics for My 16 Month Old.

My 16 month old daughter is having alot of problems with constipation. She is a great eater - loves her fruits and veggies! I have tried increasing yogurts, giving her prunes, etc., and withholding foods like cheeses, breads, etc., and nothing seems to be helping. She has such a tough time trying to go, and sometimes tries for days before finally being able to. My question is, has anyone given their toddler probiotics? I bought Culturelle for Kids so that is what I would be trying. Or has anyone tried anything else that has helped regulate their toddlers digestive system? Thanks moms!

What can I do next?

Probiotics are great! You do want to find a high quality one, and typically should be kept in the refrigerator. I like Children's Probiotic Powder by Integrative Therapeutics. Something else to consider is how much is she drinking? Often times, constipation in children is related to not consuming enough liquid (ideally water or diluted juice). That being said, while concentrated juice can sometimes act as a laxative, too much/daily concentrated juice can cause constipation. Finally, a lot of things that we consider to be great in helping constipation in adults can be counter intuitive for children. For example, the pectin in apples and grapes, as well as certain high fiber foods can cause constipation in children... just something to think about.

Adding more liquid to my son's diet worked wonders for us. Good luck!

I have just recently started my son on probiotics. I got hi the Culturelle for kids you can get it at any drugstore. This might help in digestion. I give him 1/3 a pack in some water once a day. I did some research and i didnt find anything where you couldoverdose them on probiotics but i just give him a small dose b/c i am trying to boost his immune sytem as well and these can really help.. I also started him on the brats diet. He is taking meds though b/c hes sick but this diet can also help correct digestive problems. I would think that bread could be ok as long as it had whole grains. You might try giving her some bran flakes this should help get things moving. Mayb try all three for a few days and see. Cant hurt anything. If nothing happens ina few might just want to buy some pedialax and hope that helps. Iknow that doing these three things really helped my lil boy (2 years) and He is going just fine as for noy doing this and he was having dirrhea all the time. Hope this helps you.
oh and he is big compared to the average 2 year-old and you might want to start your lil one off on 1/4 r 1/5 pack he is 33lbs and 38 inches

Hi,

I haven't tried probiotics, but I have friends that have had good luck with keifer. I always put ground flaxseed and wheat germ in my daughter's yogurt and dried fruit seems to help her.

Good luck

Yes, giving your baby probiotics is definitely a good idea! We use the brand Jarrow for babies. Of you can get to the whole foods, they have a wide selection of pyobiotics for babies that are also dairy free. This sounds to be a sure sign of a food sensitivity. The common culprits are wheat, Gluten, dairy, soy, corn and sugar. Try taking out offending foods for at least a week and supplementing with probiotics.

I used Udo's Choice Infant Probiotics. It worked really well! We also switched to Goat's milk instead of cow's milk.

I had my daughter on Probiotics when she was about that age because of extreme diarrhea from antibiotics for ear infections. I still have her take them because it's good for her and she likes them. She takes the Probiotics that I got at the Sunrise Foods store that are grape flavored tablets. Yogurt is also great but it's something easy to give her to chew ... they also have it in a liquid form that you could put into their milk etc. as well which is what I used to use for her when she was that little. Worked good and seems to keep helping too.

It's never a bad idea to add probiotics to the diet at any age! The gut is the body's first defense against fighting illness, so it's especially important to reculture after taking antibiotics. Probiotics are more bioavailable if taken in the form of fermented food like yogurt and kefir, or in lactofermented foods. They are also more likely to survive the digestive process in this form. I would suspect that she's also not drinking enough water. Good luck!

The body needs plenty of liquid, fiber, and" good" oils too. Ghee is wonderful. Learn how to make it. You can google it. It's good for the whole family because it lubricates without sticking to your intestines.

Probiotics can help a lot. If she drinks milk, try switching to raw milk available at specialty dairies - the pasteurization process, while well-intended to protect people years ago before we knew a lot about proper handling and refrigeration, kills off all of the helpful elements in milk. In fact, lactose-intolerant people can drink raw milk just fine because the key elements are still in it. If you put her on whole grains, she might do okay. I have a lot of friends who use a fantastic product called FibRestore - it's patented (so it's safe, high quality, effective) and it's from THE top food science company in the world, Reliv. It's made a huge difference in my life, and babies even can get it thru breast milk. Just a small amount a couple of times a day (mixed into whatever liquid your daughter is drinking) will probably solve her problem in a couple of days. The company also makes a children's product and it's feeding 43,000 disadvantaged kids a day through the company's charitable foundation in medical centers and feeding stations. It will give your daughter the nutrients she is missing without you having to figure out which ones those are! If she gets what she's missing, she will be able to digest whatever is giving her problems. Please do not let your pediatrician put your child on miralax or some other chemical product before you try something more proven, better studied, and safer. Good luck and let me know if I can help you more!

Limit milk, cheese, juice, peas, bananas, rice and other binding foods. Increase water. Give her grains, yogurt, occasional prunes, raisins, cut up grapes, and other various fruits and veggies like squash and pears. I really wouldn't bother with probiotics when a normal healthy diet is all they need.

Yes! This is great that you're giving your little one probiotics. My little one has gotten them from day one through my breastmilk. I would take lots of probiotics and they would get transferred that way.

Now that my son is a bit older, he regularly gets dosages of friendly flora through two sources:
1) organic, full fat yogurt. Find a kind that offers both Acidopholus and Bifidus strains, as they re-populate the different kinds of pro-flora living in different parts of the gut. If you can find or make yogurt from raw milk, you're getting even more into your child's body.

2) supplemental powder. You can mix probiotic powder into your little one's juice or applesauce. You can either get a powder from a naturopath or you can open up adult capsules (one of the best is New Chapter's All-Flora which comes in capsules and a powder form). Now that our son is a bit older, he takes Renew Life's Flora-Bears, which are chewable tablets for kids. The best products will always be found at the store under refrigeration to preserve the life of the flora. You can find these at your local co-op or Whole Foods.

In terms of foods--increasing her fiber is good. If you give prunes or other dried fruits, first stew them for a few minutes in some water. Otherwise some dried fruit can cause constipation because they dehydrate the body. Increasing water intake is always helpful.

My son has usually been regular but if he goes more than two days without elimination, we give him a double dose of one of the above. He has never had a stomach bug or diarrhea and I'm sure it's because his gut is so well populated with friendly flora!

Good luck and good job!

How strange when she eats fruits and veggies often! I would try and limit milk also to 3 8oz servings a day MAX. My daughter is a very regular girl, but I know what can happen if you give too much dairy. Give her a little more 100% juice, apple in particular, that keeps things moving for sure.

An alternative to the Culturelle would be Danactive. You can buy a little 4 pack and see how it goes. If it doesn't really help her, then maybe another route would. Good luck!!
