Problem with Standing in Crib

My son is 8 months old today and learned this past weekend how to stand in his crib. The problem is, I've worked very hard to get to the point that I can put him down awake for naps and bedtime. He would usually sit up in his crib and play or fuss for a few minutes, but would eventually fall asleep. Now that he can stand, he'll stand up and end up falling back down and usually hit his head or face on the wooden crib rail. So now I feel that I can't put him in the crib awake because he hurts himself. I put him in his pack n play for his nap today, but I don't want him to get used to sleeping in there and not go back to his crib. Has anyone dealt with this before? I don't want to undo all my hard work by rocking him to sleep! Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

What can I do next?

That is a tough one! My son is also 8 months old and often plays in his crib and then falls asleep on his own. I haven't yet experienced him standing up in his crib, but I would think that the pack-in-play is an option for naps. My son takes an afternoon nap in a swing and has been since he was 4 months old. This seems to work just fine and as long as he sleeps, I am ok with it. You may want to try having him nap in his pack-in-play. I am interested in other's responses. Good luck!

I believe that this is a problem all moms have faced when their little one learns to stand. It will take a few days...but keep him in his crib. All three of my boys went through this...and I have always put them to bed awake. It is a new and exciting thing to stand...they just aren't very good at sitting down yet. If he gets upset from standing just go in there, lie him back down and leave the room. He will eventually go back to sleep...I promise!

milestones are great when they start standing but it is very important for him to continue to put himself to sleep if you are concerned abotu him falling over I would maybe go back in and lay him down again and gently hold him down for a few minutes and tell him it is time to nap.... when they first start to walk and stand they are going to get bumps and bruises....he will be okay good luck K. mother of 13 11 8 and 1yr old sahm with a home based business www.myurbeautiful.myarbonne.com

We just went through this too,Landon will be 1 next week so a few months back when he was learning to stand up in his crib he would yell b/c he couldnt get himself back down!!(funny, but nerve racking!!)So we just listened threw the monitor and he would eventually fall and get back to sleep,if he was crying REALLY hard (from hitting his head,or mouth then I would go in)I hear that they like to "practice"what they learn on there own and then show off for you ect...so maybe just keep a close ear and let him explore and if he really needs you,you will know!!I wouldnt mess with his routine tho(the pack and play)b/c then he wont want his crib.He will soon master this and it will be fine, give it a few weeks-i promise!!Have fun...oh ya- i used to run in there everytime i heard him and my husband would say just wait a few and see what he does...sure enough he was ok.So be patient!Good Luck!!

Hi A.,

Something that helps with my boy standing in his crib (and hopping and running around in his crib) is putting a second crib bumper around the crib so one is lower, one is higher. They are secure and don't slide around so when he does stand and fall it is a much softer landing if his head does hit the side of the crib. Your baby can stand but probably does not know how to get himself back down yet, keep an eye out and put lay him back down, it may take a few dozen times and a frustrated baby but baby will get the hint it is time to sleep. I found myself sitting on the floor holding his hand after I lay him back down to console. I did not need to do this much but he learned quickly with little drama.
Good luck to you.

My daughter ended up sleeping with us for some times b/c she could climb out of her crib at 9 months. We at one point put her mattress on the floor for her safety but she still ended in bed with us so we could actually sleep. We ended up having to get her a toddler bed (about 14 months) to see if that helped but we would find her alseep in the middle shelf of her changing table. She would cry and cry forever and throughout the whole night. We both actually loved having her in bed with us but there came a time where it had to end. When my hubby came on board with her learning to sleep in her own room our world changed! It started just before she turned 2 though. We put her to bed and left the room, put the gate up and that was it. I never went back in unless it was to put her back in her bed. It took about 4 days or so. We prepared for 2 weeks. Now she goes right to bed with only occassions where she gets out but we tell her to get back in bed and she listens. She's 2 1/2 now. I hope this was helpful but I mostly wrote it so you knew more Moms were going through it too.

Don't worry about it! The only way he is going to learn is to fall & yes possibly get hurt. With my son I went in put him back down and then let the room without saying a word. It worked after about a week (so you need to be patient) also if he gets hurt falling, pick him up tell him he is okay and you are there for him. Then put him back in bed and walk away. You are going to regret letting him fall asleep in your arms or what not before putting him in bed, TRUST ME. I have learned the hard way myself. Don't forget to he is going to learn to walk some day soon too and he may fall and get hurt it is all a part of life and learning. My son would fall but never got hurt, do you have bumper pads in his crib? That may help, move them up a little maybe?

Hi there- I went through the same exact thing just a couple months ago (my daughter is 10 mos old now.) She would stand up and fuss, and eventually fall back down- sometimes bumping her head and then getting even more upset. I would comfort her whenever it sounded like she really had a good bump, but otherwise, I just let her work it out. It was a long, long 2-3 weeks to get through- but she figured it out. She stopped trying to stand anymore when I put her down for naps- now she just does it (along with whatever else she does in there when she wakes up playing around) for a while after naps, and she never bumps her head anymore- she became skilled at just lowering her bottom down gently to get down. Whatever you do, your boy will learn and it will pass soon!

Hi A.,

I went through this with both my boys...except they learned how to stand up quite a bit earlier--they learned to walk at 9 1/2 and 8 1/2 months, respectively, and if I remember correctly they could both stand up at 6 mos. We would just put them down for naps as usual in the crib. Yes, they got a kick out of standing up, then falling (and subsequently banging their heads) but after a couple days they got accustomed to their newfound ability to stand and would go to sleep as usual. Standing is a big novelty for your son right now, just as all his other milestones were, but in a few days he should lose interest somewhat. Just lower the crib mattress as far down as it will go for safety.

The thing to watch out for is when you see him actually trying to climb over the rails. Make sure there is nothing right next to the crib he can try to climb out on (dresser, changing table, etc.) and pay attention to when he can actually get a leg up and over the railing. It should be a while because he's such a little guy, but in case he is like my boys it could be very soon. When he learns to climb out either get him a toddler bed or one of those crib tents to prevent him from climbing out. You can see an example of one here: http://www.onestepahead.com/pwr/product-reviews/4065/Prod...

As you know, standing is a big step toward walking. If you haven't already it's time to baby proof the house for a walking baby. Make sure that sharp corners like the ones on coffee tables are covered and that your household environment discourages climbing. And keep in mind, too, that he's going to get quite bruised up in the months to come what with all the falling, running, etc.--and if he's a rowdy guy like mine, his share of injuries will be that much greater! Kids are resilient, though, so try not to worry too much ;)

Good luck, hope this helped!

I went through the same thing and would go up and lay him back down and say it was time to sleep, sometimes 4 or 5 times. It is a short period of time that he will fall, he will quickly learn how to get up and down by himself. Once he can get down, I would not go in. My son is now 11mths and goes to sleep well, even if stands up when I put him in his crib.

Hi A., my son was the same way! I let him try though, and eventually he learned to bend his legs to get down when he was tired enough. Now he doesnt even fight it by getting back up, he only stands after he wakes and yells for me. I say that the safest place for them to learn is in the crib, just keep checking on him but bumps will happen as they learn! Good luck
