Prometrium During Pregnancy

Hi ladies! I just recently found out that I was pregnant. Before this I had three miscarriages; therefore my doctor has decided to put me on Prometrium for low progesterone levels for the first trimester. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this and if they feel it is safe? There is so much controversy on it and to be honest it does scare me! I would appreciate any input on this matter. Thank in advance for your thoughts!

I was on prometrium for the first 3 months of my pregnancy and felt it was completely safe. I had a very high risk pregnancy and they way it was explained to me by my doctor was the prometrium would help the baby stay intact. I have a beautiful, healthy little boy know who is 3 and also have a two year little girl also.

I was on Prometrium during the early stages of my pregnancy. I had In-Vetro Fertilization and that is one of the protocals we did to help prevent an early miscarriage. I had no side effects.

I had the same problem with both of my pregnancies, only I was on Prochieve 12% gel that was a vaginal suppository. I had lost 2 babies before my doctor figured out what the problem was and now I have 2 healthy kids. I would trust your doctor, but ask questions..the only dumb question is the one not asked. Congrats!!!!

Hi H. - Both of my children are a result of infertility treatments. As part of that, I was on an injected projesterone in oil (due to my low progesterone). Both times, I was on it for around 18 weeks. Some are on it less than that. I can tell you that other than taking shots (which was a pain), I nor my children had no ill effects. I hope this helps.

I did prometrium with both of my kids and they are very healthy and wonderful! I did the vaginal suppositories from the time I found out I was pregnant until 14 weeks. My children are now 17 months and 3. Good luck!

I must admit I do not have experience with Prometrium - but I did have a problem with miscarriage due to low progesterone. I do know that your doctor should be checking your progesterone levels which I hope he did before putting you on the Prometrium.... I was on a progesterone suppository and went for weekly blood checks until the placenta took over and even then they weaned me down on the suppositories. I have had to do this for two pregnancies and it worked for me. Make sure you talk to your doc about your fears and concerns -and if you would prefer it see if the progesterone is available in your area - I had to get mine from another town as few pharmacies make it. Good Luck and God Bless!!!

I am having the same experience. I had 3 miscarriages and after studying my cycle closely, I discovered that I was ovulating less that 12 days before my period (therefore not giving my body a chance to produce enough natural progesterone to carry on the pregnancy). I am taking a Progesterone supplement and so far, have made it to 7 weeks.
I have heard of other women having success with Prometrium so my hopes are high! The only concern I have is that my symptoms are rough and I do not know if the nausea, stomach aches, hot flashes, food aversion, etc are caused by the Prometrium or the pregnancy. With my previous pregnancies I never felt sick so I am hoping this is a sign that the pregnancy is going well!

I was on it with my pregnancy now. I took it until I was 13 weeks. I did feel nauseous, but I don't know if that was added to my morning sickness from prometrium or just my morning sickness. I have had a healthy pregnancy so far, just waiting for the little guy to come out now.

I was on it twice and had two healthy kids. Though the last pregnancy was really tough as I had an overactive thyroid which made my heart race and gave me panic attacks (this was undiagnosed for 4 months). I feel that the progesterone did interact with the thyroid somehow. Doctors were unsure of the effects. I was on both the vaginal and the oral. The oral version was definitely a problem. Good luck!

I took prometrium with the last two of my three pregnancies (the first one ended in miscarriage), and haven't had a single problem with it. Even though there were risks with taking it, it was worth it so I didn't have to go through a miscarriage again. I have one healthy daughter thanks in part to it, and a son on the way!

Also, I found that if I took it at night, I had less issues with nausea and feeling tired. Hope that helps!

I was also put on Prometrim pills with my second pregnancy after I suffered a miscarriage with my 1st. My daughter is now 20 months old and she was and is still very healthy. The only side effect was it made my morning sickness worse, or at least I think so. I was throwing up all the time, but well worth it to have a happy healthy baby. I was only on the pills until the end of my 1st trimester.

After I experienced two miscarriages, I switched doctors and the 3rd time I got pregnant she had me start Prometrium as well (for the 1st trimester). She had me use this intravaginally. I never had any problems using it and my pregnancy turned out great and my son was born perfectly healthy. She had me use prometrium again when I became pregnant with my daughter, and again no problems at all, she was born healthy. If your doctor thinks this is the best for you, she probably has good reason for suggesting it. My experience was very positive and I couldn't be happier with the results. If you trust in your doctor, don't be scared, just think positively. Good luck!!
