You should check out the book "Nutrition, cycles, and fertility" by Marilyn Shannon. It covers both of your conditions and uses a more natural approach to correcting, alleviating the condition.
I have a bunch of health issues including PCOS and low thyroid (Hashimoto's Disease). Long story short, I haven't had a period since last July and after seeing my Gyno a few weeks ago, he suggested I take 7 days of Provera to bring on my long-overdue period. I did this once before and don't remember having much more than a heavy period (that was last year). So I finished up the 7 day course of Provera last Saturday and haven't gotten my period yet. In the meantime, I've been having terrible muscle cramps/spasms, weird dreams, heart palpitations & insane anxiety attacks mixed with muscle spasms when I'm trying to go to sleep at night. Last night, I didn't settle down to sleep until 4:30 am! I'm exhausted and cranky. Has anyone else experienced any of this with short term course of Provera? I'm 45 years old and not in menapause yet, so I need to have my period to avoid a D&C in the future.

Are you sure you're not in menopause? Did they check your hormones and ovaries? That is the only real way of telling if you are or not. I too had to take Provera to start my periods while going through infertility for 2 yrs and yes, I had horrible side effects from it. Absolutely hated it....my period would usually start after taking about 5 days of it.
I have taken Provera twice in the last 3 months to induce a period, both times I didn't get one. I also had terrible side effects with it. I was super cranky and restless too. On Sunday I am going to start 1 month of birth control pills (mostly because I refused to take Provera again because of the bad side effects I had), he is hoping that will start a period for me since the Provera didn't- even the second time when he upped the dosage. Good Luck!
I used provera only once when I was 15 to induce a period after it stopping for 1.5 yrs. It worked for me after taking it for 15 days. I only had to take it for one month to induce my period and my period came back on its own the next month. I had no effects at all from the medication, thank goodness. If your pd doesnt come while on the meds, def. talk to your doc to see whats up.
I also have PCOS and have taken Provera many times. I have never had any of the side effects you are complaining about. You should check with your Gyno again and make sure these are not related to something else. Good luck.
