It sounds normal to me. Seems my kids were about 5 or 6 months. If you're not using birth control and think you might be pregnant, that would also be very normal.

I'm 31 years old, and still nursing my 13 month old. Still no period. Friends have told me not to expect it at my age until I wean the baby. So far, that's ok with me. It's one less thing to worry about.

I nursed my baby for 13.5 mos. and started my period about 2 weeks after I quit. So I didn't have mine for 22.5 mos!! I am completely normal (as far as my cycle goes....every 28 days to and have a 2hour window)....so I am usually like clockwork but never had my period while pregnant or nursing.

Some women don't have a menstrual cycle while nursing. It seems that as soon as I am not nursing during the night mine returns. For me, I wouldn't be concerned unless I have weaned the baby.

i went over 4 yrs without a period because i got pregnant right when i started weaning my first and had no period until my second was completely weaned (16 months). if you're wondering if you could be pregnant, one indication i had was that my first baby started turning away from nursing. that in itself can be an indication of many things, but it was combined with other weird things that had happened with my first pregnancy as well as stopping use of birth control. anyway, i wouldn't worry about it. enjoy it!

Every person is different. You may not get your period back until after you stop nursing. Thats what happened to me. And each time you have a child it probably will be different.

If you are doing on-demand nursing, your period may not come back for over a year. Mine returned 13 months after my first child was born, 10 months with the second. So you've nothing to worry about, unless you're concerned you've gotten pregnant again. According to what I've read, about 10% of us ovulate before that first "warning period" comes along to let us know we're back in the fertility zone.
Anyway, 5 months is normal - you may be only half way through your "moon break."

I have been wondering the same thing as my daughter will be 1 year in a few days and I haven't yet had my period!! Not the worst thing that could happen....
I am still breastfeeding but plan on gently/slowing weaning starting in a few weeks and assume my period will return once I'm breastfeeding less often.

Hello,
If you are still nursing full-time or most of the time, I would not expect to see the return of your period or at least not in the same way. As you decrease the amount you are nursing, I'd expect to see your period begin to return.

Enjoy!

It is very common not to have a period while you are nursing. Do be careful though, as you can still get pregnant. I did not have mine for over a year.
If you are concerned talk to your doctor.

Yeah don't count on it. You might start up again and you might not until you're done nursing. Just remember, you can still get pregnant.

Hi R.,
My period did not return until my daughter was 16 months old! I nursed her exclusively for 2 1/2 years. Even my OB thought this was a long time but I thought it was great. Now I am every 29 days, like usual.
Everyone is different. Enjoy it while you can!

Hi R.,

Like the other responses, it sounds pretty normal. I nursed both my kids and my period came back at 10 months with my first one and 2 months with my second. If you got your period early with your daughter, you are probably expecting to get it around the same time, but the timing of the return of your period is different after every child,(both in my experience and in talking with other moms.) Of course if you are concerned, ask your obgyn.

Since you're nursing, that's completely normal. I just weaned my one year old son (fourth and last), and I have started on my first period in four years! (I was pregnant with my third son, then nursed him for a year and then got pregnant the week after I quit nursing my third, then nursed him for a year). Anyway, it is perfectly normal. I have never started on my period until after I have completely finished nursing; sometimes even 2-4 months after. :)

According to La Leche League, the average time for return of menstruation is 14.5 months. A lot of factors affect it, especially how often you baby nurses at night. That being said, it totally varies from woman to woman, and there is no way to know for sure. I have a friend who started five WEEKS after her baby was born, and several others who went close to two years.

For whatever it's worth, after my first, I got my period at 6 months; after my second, I got it at 8 months.

Hi R.,

While I was nursing I never did get my cycle until a month or so after I was done. I nursed all my children until they were a year old. I wouldn't worry when it will come back, just know that eventually it will. Enjoy it while it lasts....however if you don't want to get pregnant right away make sure to use protection just in case.

I've had three children and nursed all of them. Here's the good news...I did not have a period the entire time I nursed any of them!!! Including the pregnancies, that adds up to over six years of no periods! But about a week or two after I stopped nursing, it came back. So don't worry if you are nursing regulary and you don't have it. It's a blessing of sorts that you don't have to worry about cramps, bloating, and all of that fun stuff while you have a little one!!!

A.G.

answers from Pocatello on

If you are nursing it's normal to not have a period. Lots of woman who nurse don't get their period back until they stop nursing. I nursed my daughter for the first year and it took exactly a year to get my period back. My mom said it always took her 3 months after she stopped nursing to get her periods back and then some woman get theirs 6 weeks after having their baby. So everyone is different and I wouldn't worry about it.

It takes longer to start your TOM when you are nursing. I was a nanny and the mom didn't start her period until she quit nursing at six months. Don't worry.

It is not at all abnormal that you have not yet gotten your period if you are still breastfeeding. With my first three babies, my period returned when each one was 14 months old. Now with #4, it's a bit earlier - just got my first period last month when my baby was 11 months old. I recommend a book called "Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing" by Sheila Kippley. It will explain how this process works and why it can vary with each child.

Sometimes it starts earlier, but at times it takes about a year.
