My mother is a diaper snob. She complains if she sees my child wearing anything but name brand diapers (Huggies or Pampers). However, with gas prices the cost of diapers in getting crazy. So to all diaper snobs would you be willing to use wholesale diapers or store brands if it was necessary? If not would anything make you change? Maybe I can use your arguments on my Mom!
Thank you for all your responses it was very encouraging. I am very interested in the cloth diaper scenario. I believe I will visit a local retailer to see what they feel like and see if it fits into my lifestyle.
As for my mother I have taken her opinions as that opinion. At one point in my life her opinions were decision but now they have become merely suggestion.
You can only stretch a dolalr so far. I am a diaper snob, I only use Pampers. But if I couldn't pay other bills, or didn't have money for other parts of the budget I would try other ones. As long as they didn't leak. I would avoid White Cloud because they're so hard even when the baby pees. I'd probably go with Luv's.
If she wants to buy them, she can spend the extra money! Does she wear Gucci or Louis Vuitton panties? I think not!
edited to add - I'm so excited to see the other responses include several mentions of cloth diapers!! I was so accustomed to having the only babe around in cloth in our old hometown I didn't realize how popular they are here! ;D
Well, we used a combination of Pamper's, Luv's, and...drumroll...
cloth diapers!
We use the disposables for our nighttime heavy-wetter situation; we still have to change my almost 3-yr old at 11 or 12 at night just so he doesn't wake up soaked to the sheets.
However, for daytime, we found cloth diapers a really great alternative to disposable diapering. The great thing is that nowadays, the options and motivations for using cloth diapers are almost endless, so snobbery about brands is really hard to come by - they rise above it! And the diapers? Wow -- they are so soft, so CUTE!, and so environmentally friendly, not only are they 'diaper-snob-proof,' but they are easy and really save money, too.
I could go on and on about brands, styles, colors, and designs of cloth diapers, but here's what we use and love:
*BumGenius pocket diapers, Mother of Eden inserts (the microfiber ones that come with the pocket diaper)
*Bella Bottoms hemp or bamboo/hemp fitted diapers, ProWraps covers (though these aren't even close to as cute as covers come, they are the inexpensive workhorses in our "stash" of diapers)

I've often wondered about this secret diaper snobbery. I've used both the name brand and generic brands and found no difference to be honest, other than the price of course. I believe some of the same factories that make the name brand diapers make the generic brands, so the quality is probably about the same. It's like all private label brands (generic drugs, store branded ice cream etc.) You are just paying for the label. So if your mother is shallow enough to think labels are THAT important, tell her she can pay you the difference ;-)
We tried most brands, generic and name brand, and ended up using swaddlers/cruisers with both kids. They were a little more expensive but just seemed to fit them better and leak less. That said, my sister hated the brand I loved and found a generic brand that worked better for her babies. All babies are different and some diapers just fit some babies better than others. If what you have is working for you then you should stick with it and not worry about what brand it is. Maybe she will listen if you take the focus off the costs and try to put it on what you like about the brand you are using. If she has that big of a problem with it then I guess she could offer to pay the difference between your preferred brand and hers.
Look into cloth diapers!! They're not old fashioned anymore with pins and folding, you can snap or velrco them as easy as a disposable and I bet it would hush your Mom ; )
A friend of mine works in the business/investment world (who went to Stanford Business School), and he told me that he had learned in business school that a lot of chains (CVS etc) agree to sell name brand diapers IF the name brand company will agree to make their generic version for them as well.
I cloth diaper, and the up front cost is pretty pricey (I paid $400 for 13 Knickernappy diapers and heavy duty hemp/microfiber inserts) but I'll never have to buy a diaper again (my son is 1) so it evens out!
I liked the idea of having your mom pay for diapers if she complains about the ones you use! Touche!
I have 5 and couldn't imagine the whole cloth diaper thing. I'm sure it's great for the environment and I should, yada, yada. BUT- I use what I can afford. I get tons of coupons in the mail for both Huggies and Pampers so I carry them around, and very often by luck-they are on sale, and after the coupon cheaper than Luvs. I did notice with the Huggies, the tabs seemed to break off at times when tugged to wrap over and secure-which peeved me to say the least. I love Pampers Swaddlers. The Target brand you can get at a great deal, and they are cute. :-) You're right, everything is going up, and it's not that your cutting quality for your child, but unecesarry spending at the expense of having him/her pee or poo in 'name brand' as opposed to smart spending. They both catch the pee and poo. No one really see's or knows the diaper you child has on when your out if they are clothed anyway. It's none of her business. It's smart. You'll of course as with anything have to try out different generics, some aren't as great as others, as with the name brands. But it's your baby and your wallet. If she's so adiment(sp?) :-) Tell her she's welcome to buy your child his diapers!
If they work, fit and are still quality. Absolutely.

We use Huggies because they seem to be the only brand that doesn't leak on our kids. We have found that we can purchase them at Sam's for about the same price as most generic brands.
That being said, whatever diapers your children wear is your decision.

I admit it, I am a diaper snob! :) When my 4 year old was a baby, I found an off brand at Wal Mart that I really liked, but they got discontinued. I didn't like the smell or the leakage that occurred with other brands so I have always used Huggies since then. I have only continued because I buy cheaper and in bulk at Sams Club. I am, however, checking out cheaper store brands and wholesale brands for the exact reasons you mentioned - gas prices and diaper prices - wow. So yes, I am willing to try others in order to save us some money that I'd rather use doing fun things with the kids.

I am definitely checking out the cloth diapers after reading the last response. However, I like to use the Pampers/Huggies diapers because they just seem to work better. The off brands caused diaper rash in my 2nd daughter and they leak. Also, my midwife told me that Luvs causes UTI in girls. I always use coupons and buy the name brand diapers when they are on sale.
I had two kids in diapers at the same time. We used Costco brand and they were great. I never had any problems with them.
I have to admit that i'm a diaper snob as well!! We started out with pampers, had leakage problems, then tried huggies and LOVED them. at one point we got a little low on money so we resorted to cheaper diapers and ended up spending double the money because the cheaper ones were just not good. we are proud users of huggies and will continue to be. lol. H. this helps!!
Cloth diapers are definitely the most economical way to go. If you don't want to wash, or don't know how to use them, call me! If you use a diaper service, you never have to go out to buy diapers again. If you wash yourself, it's even less expensive.
Ask her to buy them for you! :) Or better yet, ask her to set you up with an awesome stash of the new cloth diapers, like BumGenius, FuzziBunz, or Mommy's Touch. These (except for FuzziBunz) are one-size too, so you only have to buy them once. They go on just like a disposable and don't have to be dunked, just throw 'em in the washing machine.
What a silly thing to complain about. Just laugh about it and ignore her. Tell her if she doesn't like it, then she can pay for the diapers.
