My Son has recently come down with a bad cold...Flu? Anyways I ve been giving him childrens motrin. He has recently within the last day or so had muscle cramps and pain in his right leg. It seems to be very painful and I remember going through this with his older sister and when we took her to the doctor they could find nothing wrong. During that time she was also taking Motrin for a fever. I would use Tylonol but it doesnt work on their fever, any suggestions or alturnatives to ease their fever would be helpful. Also if anyone has had the same thing or know whats going on I would very much appreciate your input. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I would ask the ped again about the cramping, it really could be a side effect of the motrin. Also, for fevers it's best to alternate between motrin & tylenol - take one dose of tylenol, then 4 hrs later, take 1 dose of motrin, then 6 hrs later another dose of tylenol. (tylenol is 3-4 hrs, motrin is 6-8). However, with the cramping, I'd recommend using advil instead of motrin. Also for fevers, make sure they're getting plenty of fluid. Dehydration, even the beginning stage, can keep fevers up. I personally like Gerber, but pedialyte is good too. I use gatorade when in a pinch. Also remember that fevers tend to spike up at night, so even if they seem fine during the day, they can spike up again at night when they're starting to get better.

When my daughter has had a fever I've alternated motrin with tylenol. The doctor told me to give her motrin and a few hours later the tylenol. The combination works great to bring down stubborn fevers. I'd call a nurse line and get the exact specifics of how much and when.

I have also had experiance with tylenol not doing much good. Works great for me but not for little people I guess.

Maybe you could try some sports muscle rub creams or something similar for the muscle aches.

Also a low fever is actually good and helps the body I only give my daughter fever reducing medicine when I absolutely have to. If she has a cold I've found the side effects of medicine to make her feel worse so I don't bother with that either. I have found that vicks vapor rub works awesome and besides being stinky has no side effects.

I have also seen some parents shove tylenol or similar medicine down their kids throats for any little thing, and the kids getting so use to the mediciine it no longer is effective or works kinda like over prescribing antibiotics. I'm not saying your doing this but that can be a problem too.

I know I had a fever about 3 weeks ago because of strep and was freezing cold and achy. I shouldn't have but I was so miserable I did anyways and I took a really really hot bath, it did make my temp go up slightly but I was no longer freezing with the chills or achy the rest of the night.

I've never tried this but I've heard of people having a fever and sweating it out. Like making themselves hot and sweaty and supposedly they've broken fevers that way.

I guess in my opinion fevers aren't necessarily a bad thing til you get around 102ish or higher. Fever's help the body fight infections and get better.

It may not be the meds that is cramping him but being sick and probably dehydrated?! When you get charlie-horse it is from dehydration. Fill him up with the liquids!! Good Luck!

Funny you should ask this question... A friend of mine called her doctor on it yesterday because her 5 year son had it...

He told her it is not the motrin... it is (like other said) not enough fluid. She stated she felt that she was contantly giving him something and he said with the fever he burns it up 5 times faster then normal. That is why pedilite, gatoraide, or others along that line, are so important to get in the body too.

Good luck!!
