Motrin always worked for us. My son's doctor said it is better because it lasts longer. There was something terrible in the news about tylenol if given too often or something. I didn't pay much attention because we don't use it but made a mental note not to start. May want to research that. Good luck!

NEITHER! I believe in Education, not medication. Medication puts a bandaid on the body's cry for help. Fevers come from virus or infections or basic "garbage" wanting out of the body.
Tylenol: http://www.naturalnews.com/019555.html
Motrin: http://www.naturalnews.com/003648.html

For fever relief - http://www.homemademedicine.com/home-remedies-fever.html

I tell parents...if your grandmother didn't put it in her body when she was young you shouldn't put it in your kids body (or yours) either.

K., we are a "pill for every ill" kind of society...but that is that doing to us...really? It is time we really took a look at what we are putting into our bodies (and more importantly our children's bodies) and WHY. PLEASE - look at the WHOLE reason why you are wanting to use Tylenol or Motrin. Is there something ELSE you can do? What is the REASON you are thinking meds? Please take a serious look at it. Seriously.

I am here to chat with when you are ready to look at education not medication.

Both. It depends on the need. Both are fever reducers and MILD pain relievers. Ibuprofen (motrin) is also an anti-inflammatory...so works on inflammation and muscle pain in a way that tylenol doesn't. It also lasts for 6 hours as opposed to 4 for tylenol. But tylenol works faster on pain and fever. You know if tylenol isn't keeping a fever down, it's a massive fever you're dealing with (104-106 unmedicated).

You can take both of them together...but we don't unless a fever isn't controllable (stays in the 100-102 range) with one alone.

Caffeine also makes Tylenol more effective (remember "Excedrine the Headache Medicine"? Just tylenol and caffeine). Caffeine has no real effect on ibuprofen.

If there's severe swelling (say in a sprain or with teething), you'll get a lot of swelling relief from ibuprofen, but not a lot a pain relief. When I have a sports injury, I take both...the ibuprofen for the swelling, and the tylenol for the pain. But if there's NO swelling, you'll pick up the pain relief. And if it's something like cramping, ibuprofen is better, since it goes after the muscles first...but for the pain of teething/sprains/etc it's tylenol. I'm always walking a balance between swelling v pain (like fever a LITTLE swelling is a good thing). So like I said, we vary by need.

Obviously, if one doens't "work" don't use it. My mum and my sister are actually allergic to acetaminophen (tylenol) and can't take it at all.

REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER...Go by WEIGHT not by age. We're scandanavian (aka big...I'm 6'1" and I'm the shrimp in the family), so our 2 year old could weigh twice as much as a Japanese two year old. My cousin was giving her daughter tylenol by age, and actually needed to almost triple the dose when she looked at the chart that had WEIGHT on it. Oops. Also, the limit is lowballed on the box. When we have a massive fever and are already combining the two I always call into Children's Hosp to get the ACTUAL max doseage for my son's weight.

K.,

Not even close. I don't know if I will ever use another Tylenol product again. A lot of liver failures (and if it is in children it is most of them) are because of the use of Tylenol. The main reason I would not use it is that it stops the production of glutathione which is what makes your immune system work. For up to 22 days, your immune system has been put on the sidelines which is not a good thing ESPECIALLY when you vaccinate. Don't get me started on vaccinations now :o)

So without a doubt it would be to use Motrin and make sure to get the dye free if you can.

I much prefer Motrin, although I keep both on hand. If my kids are really sick, my Ped has me alternating between the two every 3 hours. Tylenol can be given every 4 hours & Motrin every six. Since they are different medications & they are compatible, you can give them alternatly every 3 hours and stay within the 4 & 6 hour guidelines. Hope your lil man is feeling better soon!

I agree with Barbilee. =-)

However, if you do choose to give Motrin use it sparringly on your little guy.

I hope he feels better quickly!

Tylenol. I try not to use anything, and do cool baths. But, sometimes you gotta. they both have risks. My ped recommends rotating the 2-tylenol, then motrin , then tylenol.

My daughter gets high fevers so our Dr. recommends alternating between Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours in order to keep the fever down. If we just use Tylenol, it doesn't control the fever. The Motrin is fine, just know that it can be a little harder on an empty stomach.

Hi K., we are using Tylenol - the all and ever remedy against everything.....(well, I almost believe our pediatrician has some shares there). We were once with our little one in the emergency room for extremely high fever and Motril did the trick, but he had blood in this stool afterwards since it is highly aggressive on the stomach. You have the choice and it looks as if people prefer Motril. Our experience though keeps us away from using it since it is quite a strong drug. House remedies like cold showers or wraps, a lot of sleep and generally a healthy diet are far less doubtful. Good luck and hope your son gets well soon.

Go with the Motrin. You give less of the medicine and it last longer. The only problem I ran into with motrin is I was not giving my daughter enough. Make sure you read and follow the weight chart on the back of the box !

I tend to go for Motrin because it seems to work better for my kids especially at night (and it lasts longer, about 6-8 hrs). I use tylenol mainly during the day. Hope this helps.

I agree with Corinne - alternating works best (e.g. fever). Ask your pediatrician on what he/she recommends for dosage and hours between.

Motrin, Motrin, Motrin. It is safer than tylenol, and more effective.
