Rash on 8 Mo Old

My son has had a "rash" on the lower part of his belly, below his belly button area for a few weeks now. A couple weeks ago, we had taken him to the ER for high fever and the ER dr said it was unrelated, and that the rash looked to be a yeast infection. He prescribed some anti-fungal cream for it, which we use EVERY diaper change, and it seems to keep it at bay, but never really clears it all the way up. It doesn't seem to really bother him, except when I go to change him, he always scratches at it. It's mostly just red, but sometimes has little bumps and/or welps, too. Sometimes when he wakes up with a poopy diaper, it extends down on his bottom for a bit, too. My husband just got laid off from work, so we don't currently have insurance, or I'd take him in to see his pediatrician. Any thoughts or advice on this? Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you, Mommies and Grandmommies, for ALL your great advice! :) To my surprise, his rash has cleared up, as of this a.m. :) I hadn't had time to do anything different yet, but your suggestions brought to mind a couple of things: 1. the cream does say to use only twice a day, and I was using every diaper change 2. he does love yogurt and I've fed it to him here and there, but not really consistently to help with a yeast infection 3. he doesn't drink much apple juice but he loves apple sauce...I wonder if that could have the same affect? 4. I hadn't yet changed diapers, but that sounds like a great idea, if this continues to be a problem! 5. Also, fyi...I have applied for state insurance for the kids, but haven't been notified if approved or not...so, we wait paitently. :) Again, THANKS for all the great advice, I REALLY appreciate it!!

This might sound strange but have you tried change diaper brands. I notice my son had a rash below his belly button and tried everything then realized when I used Pampers Baby Dry it disappeared but if I used Pampers Cruisers it reappeared. It's worth a try. Good Luck with the rash and the job.

My son had thrush that was keeping his yeast infection alive. I never did see the white splotches that are supposed to be there in his mouth but the doctor did, and once he got the medicine it helped.

Also, read your instructions on the ointment. I was gobbing it on at every diaper change and it was actually supposed to be a very thin layer only twice a day.

Also, I understand in your current situation even a small co-payment would be a stretch but you might explain your situation to your pediatrician - sometimes they have cash price discounts or are associated with a nurse practitioner that might cost less that you might be able to swing if this goes on for much longer.

I second using the anti-fungal cream. I had to do a double take because I thought you were one of my daycare moms. This little guy has the same rash. He's 6 months old and likes to sleep on his tummy. Since he's mobile he'll put himself there. He has a habit of tinkling just a tiny bit all the time keeping the diaper feeling dry but just a little bit wet. I change him really often when he's here and I know moms working hard to change this too.

His rash looks rough and almost scaly. To me it doesn't look like any yeast infection I've seen. But his doctor, also at the emergency room when he was sick with an ear infection and fever, said it was yeast. This boy is still sick. His first antibiotic did not treat his infection and his rash is still coming and going.

Somehow all this crud going around is related.

Have you tried putting something like A & D ointment or Vaseline over the anti-fungal cream after you've put it on? I would put the anti-fungal cream on...let it sit for a couple of minutes to really soak into the skin then put the moisture barrier (A&D/Vaseline, etc) over it to keep it from getting moist. Repeat the process at every diaper change and see if that helps.

Another thing that I would recommend to you is to call your pediatrician's nurse and explain the situation to her (including the unemployment and your inability to pay for an office visit). Many times I have heard of nurses telling moms to bring the kiddo in for them to see and them giving out the free samples to help clear up a situation...it's worth a call and a pleading of your case. They too hate to see little ones suffer. A lot of Dr's have started doing this kind of pro bono work that is kinda hush hush because of all the legal ramifications that can come from it...

If it comes back, try keeping a diary of what he eats and when it occurs. It sounds like he is eating something he is allergic to. My son gets a rash where the poop is on his bottom when he eats things he is allergic too. Boudroux Butt Paste is the only thing that clears it up and heals it--Target and WalMart have it. Good luck!

Have you tried feeding him yogurt to help keep the yeast at bay? It can't hurt. It might take a week before you start seeing results since he has had the rash for so long. You can also try Desitin as a barrier cream if A&D doesn't work. I think it soothes better than A&D. I give my son Yo-baby yogurt whenever he gets a yeast diaper rash or is put on antibiotics. It really seems to helps. Since I've started giving it to him everyday, he has had only one yeast diaper rash & it went away MUCH faster. I hope that helps. Oh, I also agree that it is a good idea to call your pediatrician to see what they say. You never know...... Good luck!

P.,

It looks like you have some great advice here! The one thing I would suggest since you have no insurance right now is to get your kids on Health Wave! It is insurance through the state for kids with no insurance, then you can take him to the doctor.

And I have to agree with the one comment about changing the brand of diapers, sometimes something in them may cause the problem. Another thing was does he drink Apple juice? My son could not have any apple juice when he was a baby, it would break him out! Hope he gets to feeling better soon.

It sounds like diaper rash to me. My son's skin was really susceptible to this, so, at every diaper change, we slathered on the Desitin cream. It worked like a charm. After you change him & clean his skin with plain water or a wipe, make sure his skin is patted dry before you put on the cream. We would always put Desitin on him before we put him to bed. Hope this helps! Desitin is a bit messy, but I found that the "creamy" version goes on easier.

I'm sorry you lost your insurance. To help keep air to the area to help it heal, I would use an old fashioned style cloth diaper. They are relatively cheap. Since your husband is probably home a little more only use them there and don't use a plastic cover. As soon as he wets/poos you will know and can change him right away. I know you have been diligent about changing his diaper anyway, but the disposables have plastic in them to keep the moisture on the inside and creates a good environment for bacteria to grow. The old cloth doesn't have any plastic and will be wet on the outside when he goes, but still let air through. You don't have to use pins. They sell snappis now that work like the fastener on an ace bandage.

You could also try some cornstarch too, to help keep the area dry and curb the itching, but be careful he doesn't inhale any.

Best wishes!

If your son does have a yeast infection rash that keeps re-occuring I would look at his diet first, it could be that maybe juice is causing it. But to help it heal give him a bath and add about 1/4 cup of white vinegar in the water. Just let him sit in the water a little bit. The vinegar counter acts the growth of the yeast, it won't hurt him at all and you'll see the rash disappear in a few days.

My grandson had a rash all under his diaper. It was worse under his belly button, where the diaper top rubbed. No ointment would help. They'd used the same diaper brand since he was born, with no problem. I suggested they try another brand. We all thought that couldn't be it, because they'd used that same brand since birth, and he (at the time) was 4 1/2 months old. But, they tried a different brand and it cleared right up. I don't know that it's your baby's problem, but... it's worth a try! :o) If that doesn't help, my kids were all prescribed Mycolog cream for yeasty rashes. It worked like a charm... used very sparingly. Don't get generic though, if you try it. (if they even still make it.. I am a grandma now.) My sister got and used generic on her daughter and it made it much worse, but the name brand cleared her right up!
