Re-painting Furniture, Including a Crib?

I have several pieces of sturdy wood furniture (a desk, nighstand and armiore) that I'd like to repaint. All have been painted before and are not in their natural wood state. I have NO idea where to begin...I know nothing about sanding or what types of paint to use. Can you help? I should probably just go to Lowes or Home Depot and ask, but maybe some of you can also point me in the right direction.

Also, I have a white, wooden crib that I'm curious to see if I could also paint? Is it safe? I probably won't bother...just paint the wall and get colored bedding, but I saw a picture in a magazine of my exact crib painted bright yellow against a turqoise wall and it was SO cute!!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I've had excellent luck repainting furniture thru the years. The key is to thoroughly & properly sand it, wipe it down with a tack cloth, & then resand it until it's a smooth surface. You do not have to remove the old paint, you just simply have to have a good surface to bond onto.

I prefer enamel paint for repainting furniture, but have been known to use wall paint for quickie projects. I also think your idea for brainstorming with the staff at Lowes/Home D.....is a great starting point! Good Luck & have fun....

Someone sent me a link to this website/blog, and now I'm totally addicted to it! This is a young couple who are quite decorating and diy savvy, and they blog about all their projects. They have been featured on several tv shows, and in lots of magazines...

The above link takes you directly to a project they did where they refinished a dresser for their baby's nursery, and they walk you step by step through the refinishing project. They make it so easy.

If you go to their home page, and click the Projects tab, you can find even more info about different types of refinishing projects that they've done, as well as lots of other kinds of projects.

Hope this helps!

I'd ask a professional about painting the crib so you could get a paint that is safe even if the baby chewed on it (you never know).

Sue's advice is excellent - that is exactly what you need to do. Sand it down (thoroughly), and then re-paint. For something like a crib, you may sand it down yourself, and then either rent a paint sprayer or hire someone who has one. On detailed projects like that, spraying the paint on will yield better results with no brush-strokes and no drips or globs. Have fun with your projects!

I painted my son's crib black with spray paint a few years ago, and it turned out great. I asked the workers at Lowes and they said just about any kind of the spray paint was safe. You can always put one of those clear plastic chew bars on the railing, or make a cute padded cover to match the bedding?

Might not be a good idea to repaint the crib but if you do, be sure to sand down every inch of it first or it will chip at a small scratch of the nail. Sounds so cute though!

I also wanted to paint my crib, but had a very difficult time finding a paint that was safe in case my child chewed on it. Lowes and Home Depot do not carry such a paint. Be very careful when selecting a paint, always assuming that your child(ren) will chew on the crib. Good luck!
