Reaction to Hair Dye? Any Experience?

Long story short, I realized about 6 months ago that every time I get my hair colored I feel horrible for about 10 days afterwards. It's not an allergic reaction, no hives but maybe a little itching. It's more sinus pain, lethargy and generally feeling unwell. All I can figure out is that the chemicals are absorbed into the blood stream and maybe I am chemically sensitive.

For those of you have had a reaction, whatever type, have you found solutions like ammonia free or PPD free hair color to work better. As much as I would like to stop coloring all together my hair is really grey.:(

Edit: I color at the salon. Highlights and then and glaze(?) darker color over highlights.
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Ditto Jackie P! Everything on your skin absorbs and everyone has a reaction. Some are just more visible than others. Absorbing synthetic chemicals will break your immune system down and create all sorts of havoc in your life. I use non-toxic bath and body products as well as cleaners in my house. My husband would have a cow if I let my hair go gray...at least now so I buy my hair color in a box at The Vitamin Shoppe. Nothing that colors your hair permanently can be natural but at least it doesn't have the resourcinol and the ammonia in it...and I don't ever get a headache like I used to. The less I absorb from other sources, the easier my body can fight off this product.

Our country is ranked 37th out of 37 industrialized countries by the World Health Organization...we're killing ourselves somehow. Fifty years ago we were ranked number ONE! Our body is not built to tolerate these synthetics.

My two cents!

It could certainly be the dye. Do you color it at home or at a salon? If the salon, I would ask them for less harsh dyes, and perhaps semi-permanent vs permanent color. Or if you like being a red head, you can consider henna.

I have been getting my hair dyed for years and I never made the connection. I remember one time I got my hair dyed at a beauty school and for a week or two after, I was very sick-congested and sinus pain like you. I told my aunt about it because she is a firm believer that everyone should be bleach blonde and have their hair done regularly. She said that the two could not be related.

I think you are on to something.

I would agree that ammonia free would be the way to go.

A friend of mine (who happens to be an anesthesiologist, so she knows a thing or two about allergic reactions) had this happen to her. She went to an allergist, who confirmed that it is in fact an allergic reaction to one of the chemicals in the hair dye. Her colorist was able to find a hair color that didn't have that particular chemical in it, and she has had no reaction to the new color. I'd encourage you to find out what brand and color your stylist is using on you, and go get tested for the various ingredients so you know what's setting you off in particular, and find an alternate that doesn't contain whatever that is.

Anything you put on your skin (including your scalp) gets absorbed into your body. Each person reacts differently to chemicals, some have no reaction and some react.

I would ask them the next time you book an appointment about using a more eco friendly dye. I see them sold over the counter so I would assume that the salons have them as well. But remember that while you are sitting there you will be breathing in the chemicals from other people and that may effect you too.

I don't know why people make a big deal out of grey hair, I think it shows wisdom.

I switched to henna quite a few years ago and I've never had a bad reaction to it.
