Allergic Reaction to Hair Dye

Have you gone to a salon that carries Aveda products? Their hair coloring is completely natural (plant derived) and smells great, even the permanent coloring. It's also alot nicer to your hair (not as damaging). Aveda has a website where you can locate Aveda Concept salons near you. Good luck!

I have the SAME problem! I have FINALLY found a truly amazing product at a Milwaukee area health-food store called the Good Harvest Market in Pewaukee, WI. It is a home hair dye that comes in all the standard tints you can find in a professional salon and it works extremely well. The brand name is "Tints of Nature" and it comes in either a permanent or semi-permanent color. Plus, it is completely free of ammonia, resorcinol, and paraben. I do not know which ingredient I was having an allergic reaction to, but I was reacting to ALL commercial tints and most home products as well until I tried this stuff! PLUS, there is NO ammonia smell! It smells WONDERFUL! So, my family doesn't feel like they want to leave the house when I dye my hair:-). I don't know if the store listed above is close to you, but, if not, you may be able to get ordering information from them and see if a more local store may be willing to order it for you.

Ask your hair stylist.... there are products out there that are "natural" and also from vegetables (?) I once knew a stylist that was allergic to color and she used the special color products on her clients.

Another you can do is foil highlights. that way the color only touches your hair not your scalp.

No advice but my mother in-law had the same problem and had to stop coloring her hair completely.

Have you tried henna? It's natural and chemical-free.

Most of the products come in powder form for sensitive scalps and/or are allergic to regular dyes.

I know this sounds totally random, but I learned this tip from my mom, who gets blisters when she dyes her hair. Add 2 packets of Sweet N Low to the solution. For some reason, she doesn't get blisters on her scalp when she adds this to the hair dye. (I can't remember where she heard that.) I often grab a few extra packets of the pink stuff for her when I am at a coffee shop. Good luck! :)

Try henna. I've been using a henna/indigo mix on my hair for a few years and get compliments on it all the time- the shine is amazing!
