Ready for Toddler Bed?

How did you know when your toddler was ready for a toddler bed? What age did you say bye bye to the crib?

My daughter is 25months and in a crib but am wondering when it is normal to convert the crib to toddler bed. She has swung her leg up the side but no serious attempts to get out on her own yet. I like that she is safe and not in any mischief with the crib, but I fear she will use her stuffed animals like a step and climb/fall out in the near future.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just read in a magazine that if their arms can hang over the top rail, it isn't safe. I think we'll convert to crib with the toddler rail in front some time in the next month or two. Thanks to all who responded!

if sahe has already attemped to try and climb out like lifting her leg over rail then you should defanantly put her in a todler bed she should be more then ready for one too. My sone was in one a 18 months but thats only because he could climb in and out of his crib at that age. hope this helps

I read once to keep them in the crib as long as possible- probably for safety. That being said, we did switch my daughter at 23 months because we'd just potty trained and wanted her to be able to get to the toilet on her own (as if she ever does). She loves the idea of the big girl bed though, and we were also preparing her for a younger sister, so we played up the big girl aspect. We've had very few problems with her getting out of bed when she shouldn't & she's never hurt herself. Oh, but she did fall out once even though we do have a rail that covers half the side.

Keep the crib as long as you can! We kept it four years with no problems. (well the last year few months we had the conversion on the front that makes it like a toddler bed.
Your life will change once you get rid of the crib. Some start coming in your room every night....etc.

Hi K.,

My son this turn 3 in september and still in crib, he put one leg out once and climb in crib once, never did it again, he love his crib with his babies and blankets! He sleep thru the night and still taking a nap! So I know when he move out of the crib things will totally change! I will keep him in there until he decides to move to a big boy bed himself, he is safe there!
Do what you think is safe for her of course, tell her not to clim out because she can fall and get a boo-boo!
Or if you think she will stays in on big girl bed, go for it!
My son will be in and out! He wont listen!

Good luck, I wish all the best!
keep us posted!

my daughter went into a toddler bed at 16 months (we had a convertable crib). then her crib got recalled so we just purchased a toddler bed and she has been in it ever since. if there is nothing in her room that can hurt her then i say go for it! why wait until she falls out? my daughter is 31 months and doesnt even use the side rails anymore. good luck!

We moved my son from his crib to a twin bed at 18 months when he started to climb onto the rail of his crib and jump out onto the floor.

My daughter is now 2.5 years old and has no desire to climb out of her crib. So we probably won't move her to a twin bed until Christmas or maybe even until she turns 3. We are hoping she will be potty trained before she moves to her twin bed. My son was not potty trained before he moved to his twin bed and has had many accidents so his mattress always smells like pee :(.

My son jumped out of his crib before he even turned two, but I would have kept him in there as long as he would stay. I don't know how he didn't get hurt. I wouldn't rush to put her in a toddler bed. Heck, I know people that have their 3 year old in a crib still. Whatever works for your family. I wouldn't change anything if she is happy. My son was with us for 2 months in our bed until we converted our guest room into his big boy room. It is sooooo cute. We actually just got twin bunk beds and made it super comfy. Soft 400 ct sheets on sale at Kohls for $20.00 and a soft super man blanket. We also got him a big curious george so he had something to cuddle with. We do have a bed rail up so he doesn't fall out. He loves to sleep in his room now, which we never thought would happen. It is good timing too because we have baby #2 coming next month. My husband puts him to bed and if he wakes up in the middle of the night my husband goes in and comforts him back to sleep. I can't because I need my rest and am too uncomfortable to climb in the bunk bed because the bed rail is in the way. I'm way to pregnant to be climbing in and out of there. Anyway good luck.

Hi K. :) My husband grew up in El Cajon, small world!
Anyway, our daughter started throwing fits about sleeping in her crib at 1.5 so thats when we had to switch! We put her matress on the floor, and after 2 weeks or so we put her mattress into her new bedframe. That is about how long it took until she stayed on the mattress all night without rolling off.

What works for us is she likes the hallway light on outside her room, and I crack her bedroom door. When she is asleep, I close her bedroom door, and since she cannot open the door herself, (not yet anyway) I have the peace of mind knowing that she is safe and not getting into anything, and if she cries, I can definitely hear her from our room even with the door closed. Good luck, the transition isnt as terrifying as it seems like it will be!

my first was 14 mos. She climbed out with a big fall. She was not hurt but I didn't want to see her get hurt so we converted the crib. My second just swithced about a month ago. so about 22 months. she was awake from her nap playing for a while and when My hubby went to go get her she was straddling the rail on her belly. As long as you can, go for it, but the second she really tries to get out it has to come down. I see it in your near future. Good luck!

Hi K.
My son will be 3 in November and he's still in a crib. He's ready for a big bed and probably was at the age of your daughter but I didn't want him getting out of bed whenever he wanted so I kept him in... we are finally getting him a big bed in the next couple weeks. My son never tried to get out of his crib so we were very lucky (and he's small so he still fits in his crib). Some people think a crib is only for babies so they should be in a big bed asap but I feel it's whatever you feel comfortable with.

Our daughter is almost 2 1/2, we're gonna transition to the bed this month I think (baby #2 is due in 4 months, just want to make sure that the crib is a distant memory by the time the new one arrives needing it).

If you think she'll try to climb out of it soon, may want to start planning for the transition. But I think there's no real rush, my less adventuresome one hasn't tried to break free at all, she'd probably be happy in there till age 4 if we let her.

I moved my kids when they were a few months over age 2. We never got a toddler bed, just a twin bed with rails. They grow out of a toddler bed so quickly, and with a twin bed, you can lay with them if they have a bad dream or sick or something.

My daughter is 26 months. She is able to climb out of her crib but does not do so when it is dark, she does it when she needs to get something out of her crib (baby, blanket, book). She loves her crib still, so I'll be keeping her in there for at least a few more months.

Both of my daughters switched to twin beds before they were two (the first one out of necessity of handing down the crib). Never felt like we needed rails and never had trouble with either of them falling out.

But... be prepared, there is the honeymoon period when the don't realize that they can get out of bed themselves (since someone has always gotten them up) and then you have to be ready for to deal with it when they do!
