Hi Moms,

I would like to buy my son some kind of video game system. I've heard of Wii, Nintendo ds, and Xbox and Xbox360. Please share with me any pros or negs. to any of these for a 7 yr. old boy. (Or any other game systems) I heard you can exercise with the Wii. Sounds great... I could use it , too:) But... what kind of exercise? And do you buy discs or cartridges, download or what? for these systems. I need a system that is not too complicated, too.

Thanks a lot!

We have Wii, Playstation 2, psp and nintendo ds. It depends on what he is into and how you want to use the system. Between the playstation and the Wii, I prefer the Wii. But my kids play both of them equally. If they want to jump around and play, they use the Wii. If they just want to play a game quietly, they use the playstation.

Psp and Nintendo Ds are handhelds and are a blessing if you have other children in activities. They are really small and portable and are great in the car, at sports practices and other places not at home. whatever games that you can play on a regular playstation, you can also play on psp (you have to buy boht the psp and the playstation version). The Ds has more educational type games - brain age and big brain academy are great for school.

The decision is really what you want to spend, how many kids are going to be playing, what type of games he likes to play and if you are looking for portability. Also, just to let you know, my kids are 12, 10, 9 and 5. My 5 yr old is getting a DS from Santa this year! My girls like the Wii and DS and my boys like the PSP and the playstation.

We recently got a Wii. It is the most physically interactive game system right now, and it seems like it encourages group play when friends or other kids are over.

But the games and accessories are really expensive! I can't say how it matches up against the cost of other systems, but it's like buying a Porsche or something. Games seem to be around $50, and if you want something like wii fit or DDR, you also have to pay more for the special stuff that comes with those. I enjoy having it, but I have to admit I didn't realize how expensive it would end up being.

Nintendo Wii all the way. You can get all the fun mario games for this one, they come on cd's. It's great for hand eye coordination. I would say this one has the least amount of the violent games available as well, which is important for our family. I haven't tried Wii Fitness yet myself but plan to next year. My son just turned 7 and caught onto the Wii very quickly, he loves it!

I, too, like the wii system because the kids are often active while playing on it -- not couch potatoes like with other gaming systems. The wii console comes loaded with several different sports games and this was all we had for a few months and my kids still had lots of fun playing it. After almost a year we have 3 games and that has worked out just fine. It's good to have 2 remotes and 2 nunchuks so two can play. The system comes with one set. When considering new games visit the sites that sell them to get ratings and feeback from users -- it really helps.
