I would like your thoughs about PSP. My son is 5 years old, he already plays with Leapster2 and Leapster Explorer, which he loves. He does not play with them ALL the time.....just here and there, even he likes them he prefers to be outside running and jumping or playing with his sister.

My husband just gave me his PSP to sell in the internet because he never plays with it but I am not sure if my son could / should be playing with it soon.

Are there any appropiate games for little kids that can be played in the PSP. I have never ever played video games, I am completely in the dark in this but I do not want to sell it for maybe 60 dlls and then in short time spend 160 on a new one.

I know this is not really an important issue but I do appreciate your knowledge and experience.
Thank you.

What can I do next?

The PSP will be hard to find age appropriate games for. The Nintendo DS would be a better choice. My 6 and 3 year olds have them, and we allow game time for 30 minutes at a time, 2x per day, and they LOVE it. The DS comes with super mario bros, and that game alone is the best of them all. You may not need to buy much more!

Well I wouldn't sell it for $60. My boys both have them and are teens. I have never bought games for them tho. They listen to their music on them, and they can hook up wifi with it and talk to their friends on FB. So not sure what a 5 year old could get out of it, but maybe you could save it for later. After all the $ you spent getting it, they are not cheap.

Those are not the best game systems for 5 year olds. There are not a lot of games for the psp for his age that I know of. I would sell it. If it was a nintendo dsi, I would say keep though. There are many more arcade style games for his age on the nintendo system.

I have a 6 and 4 year old and both of my kids love Wii! They have played PSP at various friends houses and yes, I do believe it is too old for a 5 year old. Your son will probably enjoy it more when he's 7 or 8..my 10 year old nephew loves it. Truth be told, the games that your older son will enjoy are fairly involved, chasing, shooting, using weapons...just so you know, apparently that is what entertains that age boys. My son who is 4 (just turned) is infatuated with Wii...he playes Mario, Donkey Kong, Wii Sports, Just Dance, Sonic. Another favorite thing is his iTouch/iPod...they cost the same as a Nintendo DSi but most of the games for his age are free or .99 or 1.99 and the live on the device whereas games for the DSi are cartridges that cost about $12.00 and can get lost. So, if I were you, I would sell the PSP and get a Wii or an ITouch.

The only reason I would hold off on giving it to your son at 5 is that the games are in disc form and we all know what a 5 year old is capable of doing to a dvd, or anyother cd that can scratch easily. I am not anit video games we have a 2 ds's, a wii and a ps3 and i will tell you my kids are also wanting to be outside and play than play the video games but the ds is soo handy in the car on long car rides, the wii when we want family game night (yes we do board games and farkle as well) and the PS3 for the better graphic games and the blue ray player. I would sell it probably more than 60 especially if there are games involved and if you want to get your son a gaming system i would buy him a ds.

Get the iPod touch instead. It has numerous educational apps and tons of fun games!

I would not think a PSP appropriate for a 5 year old. The controls and game content are not really appropriate. I would look into selling it and getting a Nintendo DS instead. They even have some educational games for it.

I think Nintendo DS has more age-appropriate games. There are tons to choose from.

I would wait - I didn't get my son his first hand held until he was about 7. Then I limited the time he could spend with it.

I agree with Diane B. - keep him physical active and outside - so much more healthy.

God Bless

I wouldn't give him the PSP. My husband has one and most of the games are fairly violent. There aren't any that are good for kids. I would keep him on the Leapster for a few more years yet. :) If you really want to get him a different hand held, I would go with the Nintendo DS. There are a lot of games geared toward younger kids. Maybe not as young as 5 though. I think about 7 is when they can start to really grasp the concept.

As for selling the PSP for $60. I think you might be undercharging. Look on eBay and see what they're selling for.

Or just hang on to it until your son is old enough for it.

If your son prefers to play and run around, great! Keep encouraging that! He doesn't need more games especially if he's not interested!

I still won't buy my kids portable game systems (they are 7, 10, 12). We have a Nintendo game cube and pc games. That is enough for them.

There are TONS of educational websites for kids. Starfall is a great one to teach literacy (I used it for 3 years when I taught kindergarten, plus with all of my kids, and they loved it!) and pbskids.org is other good source. And, I don't know about your area, but I got all sorts of educational, fun computer games for my kids from the library when they were younger (reader rabbit and jump start are two great ones, if they are still available and suitable for the new computers). Free, one week checkout, able to change regularly so little boredom, and no risk.

Hi M.,

My son is 5 and he also has a PSP and he loves it. We got it for him at Christmas time, although he is trouble for not listening (cleaning his room, being mean to his sister, etc...) But when he is allowed to play with it he plays it for couple hours....the games he has is litte big planet, superhero squad, sonic the hedgehog, pinball game and iron man...not exactly sure if that's good for his age but he loves it. I like the PSP because not only can you play games on it but you can watch movies on it and download music....it's a pretty cool gadget. We haven't allowed him to watch movies on it yet but, I think he will enjoy it when the time comes. I hope this helps!

Go to a shop like Gamestop. They have whole shelves of games separated by age and what is appropriate for the kiddos. Lots of times they have used games that are much cheaper too.
