Red Blotches on 9 Month Old

My 9 month old little girl has, in the last couple of days, developed some red blotches on her butt cheeks. They're small, dime-shaped and spread out, not clustered together. It doesn't look like a rash, and I don't know if they're itchy, but they look llike they are (it's hard to tell with her because she doesn't fuss or complain about anything). They're not going away or getting better and I was hoping someone would have some ideas on what it could be...? I am going to be taking her to the doctor on Monday, but until then I was hoping I could find out what they could be and hopefully help her be more comfortable until I can take her to the doctor, if not just make them go away completely. I don't know what could have cause them. I am breastfeeding and only giving her some solids for her to taste and practice chewing on mostly, but don't think it is a food allergy as I have not eaten anything out of the norm of what I usually eat (or give her), and the blotches are only higher on her butt and have not even gone up her back or anywhere else. I'm sure it has to do with her diaper, but we've been using the same diapers as always and have changed her as frequently as we always have. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I took her to the doctor today and she said it looked like ringworm and gave me a prescription for some cream. It was already looking better today though, just dry. Thank you all so much for your posts, I really appreciate it!

sounds to me like a yeast infection if you are giving her fruit in her baby food quit. if you can get arbonne diaper rash ointment it does work on a yeast infection better than anything I have tried but if it is a yeast infection you are goint to need nystasin from the doctor. I have been through multiple yeast infections and still going through them and probotics will get highly recommended I bought the chew ones but they have them at gnc that you put if fluid and its tasteless.

It could definitely be the diaper, I would do a little experiment and buy a different type of diaper and put it on her. If it all clears up within a day you have your answer! Unfortuneately, many of the diaper brands that we trust change whats used to make the diaper- I have seen changes happen quite a few times. Good luck, hope you get to the bottom of this! ;-)

If its only in the diaper area...I am going to second the diaper and also consider the wipe. A food allergy is generally going to be much more wide spread. It could be some acidity developing from some of the food tasting.

Also, in my daughter's first 18 months, she had a number of outbreaks of unexplained hives. If this is her first, I would definitely take her in and get the appropriate dose of Benadryl--it is good to always know what your child weighs. My daughter's reactions did escalate to the point of swollen lips and tongue. Luckily, she always responded to the Benadryl...though not before a couple of trips to the ER.

It could be a reaction to one of the new solids you introduced her to. My son did this at that age. I would put some Desitin on the rash in case it's itchy or painful until you see the doctor on Monday. I also switched diaper brands. All of that seemed to help. Just try to make her as comfortable until you see the doctor!

Her pediatrician would be the best to go to about this. He/She could do a battery of tests in no time and send you home with the proper cream. Without a picture or other explanations of symptoms I can only guess. The diapers in this package might have a slightly changed formula, so switching to a different brand might help. you can do a systematic removal/switch of each item of concern until the rash gets better, ie change diaper brand, if not it change diaper cream, if not that change diet, etc... Good luck!!

Interesting, I think my 2 yr old daughter has the same issue. I took her to the doctor a few weeks ago and thought it maybe due to allergies. Started giving her Children's Claritin. Unfortunatly, it is spreading and the red bumps are going down her back legs. When they first apear they look like bites with white heads and very red around but then fade. We are taking her to the doctor today as well. Note: Have washed all her bedding and did a good clean & vacuum in her room. I will keep you posted after her doct apt this morning at 11:00.

Update: Our doctors (reg doctor & dermatologist) said its Bacterial - Folliculitis. Recommend Polysporin as first try but my daughter is beyond that and got Antibiotics "Cephalexin" for Keflex.

It could also be a heat type rash, esp if its in the rear diaper area. One of daughters had a similar issue when she ended up getting too hot.
I would srill go to the dr and find out what they think. It could be just about anything.
Good luck and I hope it's very minor :-)
