My son's doctor has been closed due to weather. Here is what's going on...for a few weeks he has gagged a few times a day but nothing comes out. He just started preschool and was catching colds and has a sensitive stomach and the Dr thoght this was just from all the snot. The past few days however, he is gagging a lot and dry heaving. Tuesday he seemed to have a fever (sucky thermometer would not read right but he felt like he had a fever) and he threw up. Once. Thursday was the worst with the gagging (and now burping) and he threw up again. I could not get him to eat much but he wanted a Pediasure so I gave him one and he threw the entire thing up. I called the dr but like I said, closed. Thursday I noticed he has a metallic smell coming from his mouth, even after a teeth brushing. He has wanted water and no food. All of Thursday night was spent half sleeping and half gagging. He just threw up again. What can I give him? What can I do? He is clammy but no fever, no fever since Tuesday that I can tell. I am w/ him all day.

***Edit to add: He is 3. He has been asking for water (that is all he is asking for) and he wants in a bottle not a sippy. I have been giving it to him that way b/c whatever I can get down him to stay hydrated I'm doing it. If his doctor is still not open I will take him to Care Now or the ER.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I can't believe your doctors office can close like that without having someone oncall for questions! Does your insurance have a nurses hotline-it should say on the back of the card.

Is there any chance that he could have swallowed something metallic? If by chance it was a magnet you would need to get him seen immediately-that is a medical emergency.

I would probably go to the ER if I couldn't get him seen by a doc today. Those symptoms are very strange.

I wish I could remeber the question that a wonderful answer was on, it was about the flu. The poster gave very good explaiations about what the body was doing suring the time it is sick. It is normal to not want to eat food while sick, it is normal to gag and ouke up stuff if the drainage is going down their throat all the time, especially if it is thick and sticky. Drinking fluids is the most natural thing for them to do at this time.

It sounds like flu b, but be safe, call the doc, they are still taking calls somewhere. They have to have a doc "on call". Call the hospital they use and ask the operator if they can have your doc call you. They will hae whoever is on call do the calling and you can get your answer that way. Or go to a emergency clinic that is open.

Number one you need to keep him hydrated. If he is not hydrated enough you need to get him to the Er for an IV for fluids. SOme fo your sons symptoms remind me of my daughter when she was younger, sick often, sensitive stomach, the cough. He is defintiely fighting something. Most of the immune system is in your gut so his gut is staying busy trying to fight off all those infections. My daughter was diagnosed with an immune deficiency at age 15. I'm sure she had it for awhile but no one took the time to stop giving her antibiotics and check to see if something else was going on. Finally at age 13 when she was sick for almost the entire school eyar they tested her immune levels and found they were low I still remember at the age of 6 weeks her having a double ear infection. As a preteen she always complained about her stomach bothering her so they assumed it was reflux. We even had a endoscopy done and everything was normal. Have the doctor do an immune test and your child may need to be on a maintenance does of antibiotics to get him through this season. Aslo they should be checking the tonsils, ears and adenoids to see if there are issues there. If you can get your child to do the OTC nose sprays like 4way I think it is called it will help loosen up what is in his nose. The buggers could be draining into his stomach making him feel unwell. Soup and tea will also help.

My son suffers from SEVERE acid reflux and has been on zantac since 3 mo old. I am no doctor but I would recommend taking him to a walk in clinic or the ER. How old is your son? is he spitting up or is he projectile vomitting? before my son was diagnosed with GERD he puked and puked and puked. I was told to spoil him when it came to liquids. Even if he threw it up, give him a bottle whenever he wants it. The main thing is staying hydrated and if you can add pedilytein with his water (they have some that is not flavored) I would do so... temp or not, I would get him to a doc ASAP, even if it's not "his" doctor.... the last thing you want is for him to become dehydrated. Does he have reg stools?

Sounds flu-ish to me. I'd keep giving him want he wants, water mostly and of course some chicken broth if he likes it. Pedialyte and Pediasure to keep him hydrated. Dry mouth will make you gag too, so he may be getting dehydrated. The more he rests and sleeps the sooner he will heal. I would schedule an appt just in case, but it just sounds like your little guy is under the weather to me and you just need to keep him comfortable and allow him to sleep as much as possible so his little system can fight off the bug.

I'd get him to a Care Now place or the ER. Something is wrong for sure. I know it's going to be rough going with all this snow on top of the ice but get him checked out!
