Reliable Thermometer

I am due soon with baby #2 and looking to buy a new thermometer. I would like one that can be used quickly (thinking of squirmy kids) and easily. I purchased the Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer before my daughter was born but feel like it was not consistent and often read too low. I don't mind spending up to $100 but I have been unable to find a thermometer that has received several great reviews online. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I got the Braun Ear Thermometer from my Mom a couple years ago. I feel it works great. Just a few seconds in the ear and it's done. And my daughter doesn't mind it. And it seems right on with the temp. I didn't buy it, so I couldn't tell you much else about it...but I've loved it since I got it!

Good luck finding one!

I too recommend the Braun Ear thermometer....quick and easy! It is more expensive but SO worth it. When I want to know I want to know right away and it is very accurate.

Take care~

I don't have suggestion on what to buy, but we have a simple digital that needs to be used orally, and it works the best. Not ideal for an infant, though. We also own a Walgreens brand ear thermometer (around $30, I think) and I hate it. It consistently reads low (we can compare with our other thermometer), and despite it's claim as "easy", it takes a lot of trials to get it right. Perhaps the more expensive ear ones are better...

We have a Philips Temporal Thermometer that is at least ten years old and works really well. I just love it.

The best thing to use is a rectal thermometer. I worked in peds for over 7 years and the other thermomethers are not useful untill the baby is over 1 years old. I know most people hate taking a rectal temp but it is the only way to get a real temp on a baby.

I also have the Braun Thermoscan and have used it for 4.5 years. I really like it, but you have to make sure you are positioing it correctly in the ear or you will get an inaccurate reading. I usually always check both ears at least once and get kind of an average reading. If you get a high temp on a baby less than a year or the temp doesn't seem to match baby's symptoms, I always double check a rectal since that's most accurate. When we got the thermometer I think it sold fo $40.

I used one int he ear, like the pediatricians used.
It was 15 years ago, but we still use the thing and my children were able to use it at very young ages on their own.

It had a setting for infant and adult.
