Removing 3 Year Old's Fingernail Polish Disaster

We resently gutted our bathroom and replaced everything from the sink to the toilet. And, of course, nice new things can't stay nice new things for long. My 3y/o wanted to paint her fingernails and couldn't wait for mom to do it...she got it all over the vanity top and toilet bowl. Any suggestions on how to remove the polish without removing the shine and damaging the sink and toilet?

What can I do next?

Blot it with vinegar with a cotton ball or white cloth don't rub, just blot it until it lifts off. It should work!

Don't I know this! My 3 year old boy decided to help my 2 year old girl paint her nails.....They also painted the bathroom floor of the place that we are RENTING. I used almost and entire bottle of nail polish remover....and because it was bright burgundy nail polish, the floor is slighly "pink" stained yet. I don't know of anything else to us. Obviously nothing like Mr. Clean's Magic Erase works on that stuff. Good luck! Little stinkers they are!

J., I have used f.p. remover on our toilet seat and in our sink before and did not notice any difference in the shine. Not knowing where your damage is, I would suggest try the remover on the toilet seat first. If you don't like the result, you can always (easily) replace the seat. They sell them at all the major home improvement stores.

I spilled nail polish on the floor in the bathroom - tile and some on the toilet bowl too. My mom suggested I paint more nail polish on top of it and wipe it away. It worked! It works on your nails too...paint new wet polish on top of already dry polish and wipe it away and it comes off.

Finger nail polish would probably work.

J.,

I too have been in your position.....All I can say is start buying the Mr. Clean Erasers in bulk! The work on EVERYTHING! Sometimes you have to use a little elbow grease with them, but oh do they ever work!

We use a product called "OOPS!" It is a multi-purpose remover, and may work for you. I have been using it to remove old paint from the woodwork in our house and it has worked pretty well. We get it at Fleet Farm. They also have a website. It is www.homaxproducts.com. I hope this helps you.

There's a product called Goof Off that you can get at Lowes, Wal-Mart, places like that. This stuff is like magic, it'll take anything off without ruining the surface. For example, I used it to take old paint off my hardwood floors without damaging the wood. It does all sorts of great stuff and we have it here for just about everything. The only bad thing is the smell. You'll want to make sure that your daughter isn't near the room and you might want to wear one of those masks so you don't have a "funny feeling" in your head after you've used it :) I'd get the aersol form, the liquid works great too but it's a little harder to work with because you can easily use too much. We also recently re-did our bathroom and I used the Goof Off to take all the paint splatters off the tub/sink and toilet. It also leaves a nice shine. Hope this helps.

Hi J.-

I often paint my toes and often make a mess myself and I'm 32! I spilled RED polish on my parents beige carpet when I was visiting. (My friend told me to use fingernail poish remover on it)- and sure enough it worked without removing the color of the carpet.

The other day I knocked the polish over in the bathroom and watched it dump down the counter, on the sink, and onto the floor! SO I thought of last time and tried polish remover and YES!! it worked.

Good luck!!!

Our 2.5 year old hit the polish off the counter one day and we had the same mess all over our tile, countertop, and door. We used baking soda and vinager mix. We just poured some baking soda on all the spots and then poured some vinager on it and scrubbed with a towel. It came right out, we did do it right away so I am not sure if it works on it when it is set in.

I have used non-acetone polish remover on my toilet seat. It hasn't ever taken the finish off. You could try it on a spot you can't really see to begin with. Good luck!!! I have an inpatient very independent five year old :)

Why are all the people who recommend "Sol-U-Mel" giving email addresses or asking you to contact them? Is it some sort of marketing scheme?? I've never heard of the stuff.

J.; i would wait it out, when we paint our nails it eventually flakes off and sometimes can be peeled off with your finger nails, or lightly scraped, i would not use polish remover this can harm surfaces, just enjoy your little ones and always remember these little blunders, you will some day laugh, D. s

If you know anyone who uses Melaleuca products, see if you can use a little Sol-U-mel. Try in an inconspicuoius spot first...it shouldn;t hurt the shine but you want to make sure. This stuff is a must have with kids (and husbands!) It has removed spilled bottles of nail polish in my home out of carpets, permanent marker off walls and chairs and grease out of clothes! It even kills dust mites so is great so homes with pets or allergy/asthma sufferers. And the best part...without any toxic checmicals!
Good luck and if you ever want info on other safer products, let me know!
