Resuming Exercise After Gallbladder Removal.

Good morning! I posted a while back when I was debating whether or not to have my gallbladder removed and I ended up having the surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago and am feeling so much better already!

My question is, did you wait the full 6 weeks the doctor recommends to resume exercising? I am a runner and enjoy working out 4-5 times per week, it's my stress reliever and my "me" time! I'm finding the hardest part of recovery is being out of the gym! I know I'm allowed to briskly walk, but I'm wondering how long everyone else waited to start jogging (will slowly build to running). I of course won't be lifting any weights since that could cause a hernia.

I'd love to hear your experiences, thanks :)

What can I do next?

I think full exercise would jostle the inner abdomen too much and might cause the stitched areas to rip open.

If it were simple stuff like maybe swimming that was not too strenuous maybe, low impact and not too....jiggly. LOL.

I went back to work 2 days after having mine out, I worked half a day then went home, went back the next day and worked fine. I was a nanny so I didn't have to do too much heavy lifting kind of work anyway.

I think the doc knows best in this case. I would do stretches and slow movements, if you can get to a pool why not swim a few very slow gentle laps just to get the blood moving and some muscles moving. I think it is all about the action of the body jostling back and forth during exercise that might cause something to rip open that is not entirely healed.

Ask the doc specifically about running or other fast paced movement. You don't want to cause something inside to rip out, more surgery is not recommended. LOL.

My doc said after my surgery, I could start light exercising (cardio & etc) after 4 weeks, but to definitely wait the full 6 weeks before doing anything "core." So... I haven't been participating in our lunch-hour videos... Until THIS WEEK (my 6th week ended last Friday)!! I'm so happy to be "able" to exercise again. Oh, and gallbladder surgery--the best decision ever!
Good luck, I say you should start out very slow as long as you're feeling okay. Maybe just start with walking until ~4 weeks then try jogging? Only you know how your body feels and if getting back to your running is important to you... Maybe it's worth a try?

I understand your wanting to get back to it. I only have a head cold, and I feel that way about it. I have learned in a few short weeks to LOVE my running time!

But really, you need to discuss this with your doctor. Every case is going to be different and safe is better than sorry. Tell your doctor what you told us, and ask him what you can do and what he is adamant you do NOT do...
When I injured my knee in December, I specifically asked the doctor about how to gauge my recovery: "So when it starts to feel better, can I try to do ___? If so, how much should/can I do? When should I stop? Can I cause damage if I do too much too soon? What if pain comes back? Should I be concerned about worsening anything by doing ___?" etc.

Ask your doctor and get his recommendations about how to increase your activity, and how to know when you are pushing too far too fast. He can guide you.
Best of luck getting back on the road....

Wait the 6 weeks. It's not worth the risk. Sometimes doctors actually know what they are talking about :)

I would definitely say wait. If the doc said 6 weeks, then wait six weeks. I know it's really hard because you're so restless when you don't exercise. At least, I am. I'd say take that time for yourself still, but just walk briskly or read a book or something to refresh yourself.

I did too much, too soon. It wasn't running or anything, but my family and I took a very long day trip to the zoo where we were out all day and walking the whole day. I thought it would be fine because I felt so much better already, especially compared to how I felt before my gallbladder surgery. Well, it was too much, and I was exhausted and sore in my abdomen for three days. It was terrible! So... use me as an example of what NOT to do. LOL
